chitoryu12 posted:When I've seen it from poor people, it's always been people who are stuck in minimum wage service jobs like as a waitress. The problem is they think that every job has a specific value and that jobs require mental complexity to actually be worth money. As the quote goes, "Americans see themselves not as poor, but as temporarily embarrassed millionaires." The goal is to get out of the jobs that they've been conditioned by society to view as worthless and only meant for lazy or stupid people ("Go to college or you'll be flipping burgers for the rest of your life!"), not to lift up the people who are in them. Absolutely agree. A big part of it is that people assume those who work in minimum wage jobs are teenagers. Personally, I think this is a hold-over from the Baby Boomer generation where a lot of the fast food jobs were held by teenagers. That's simply not true in 2016. The middle and upper classes (and even the lower class folks earning more than minimum wage) assume that just because someone is flipping burgers, or stocking shelves, or waiting tables, or cashiering at the store that they must be idiots. After I got laid off from my adjunct faculty position at the large state university I was working at (I taught costume design and stage makeup and theater history - totally useful classes...) I took a part-time job at Jo-Ann Fabrics. While I was cutting a woman's fabric for her, she said to her daughter "It's very important to stay in school so that you can get a very good job." It wasn't necessarily directed at me, she and her daughter were discussing doing her homework. But I handed the woman her fabric and said "I have a masters degree and I was laid off from University." And everyone stood up and clapped. But seriously, she just looked at me with such pity in her eyes and said that the economy was terrible. Edit: Woah... picture big. Fixed that. Practical Demon posted:I think a lot of the poorer people against raising wages are people making a bit above minimum wage, or who are at minimum but have support so they're doing okay enough that they don't care. They don't see an increase as a godsend to a lot of poor people, but as something that would mean paying more for goods and services for them. This results in "gently caress all of you, just get a better job" in their minds. A girl I'm friends with on Facebook posted some meme making GBS threads on Mcdonalds employees for wanting more money, because something something our troops. The woman works a Costco and makes over $20 an hour just walking around trying to get people to sign up for higher memberships. Yet, she feels that people working at Mcdonalds should shut up and be happy for what they have.

The "our troops" one is always a riot because they forget how a huge part of a soldier's expenses is subsidized by the taxpayer. Soldiers get free housing, meals, healthcare, etc. It might not be the best, but their living expenses are typically much lower than a civilian. The same people also love to respond to that by pointing out how soldiers are "dying for our freedom" in return for those benefits, without realizing that about 2/3 of those soldiers serve in non-combat positions and are put in little to no danger from anyone but their fellow soldiers being assholes.

I see that so much from people who work lovely minimum wage jobs and think they're lucky to make the little that they do. Some of it is what people have already brought up with more money=better than, so if the burger flipper is now making almost as much or *gasp* as much as them it means they weren't as well off as they pretend. There's also the real fear that companies will throw tantrums and take it out on their employees by reducing hours/staffing.

A lot of the anti-wage increase comics I've seen focus on the idea that raising the wage will result in the company laying people off. So somehow this is the fault of the employees who got the raise, not the fault of the lovely company that refuses to lessen their CEO's bonus.

A bit of backstory: Mutual friend of mine posts about the latest unarmed black dude gets murdered, and red goes into the standard tizzy about how he didn't follow orders, etc. Gets beat down by me and the original poster. Evidently he's really mad that people called him a racist, because in a completely other post by the OP, about France and how they give away leftover food to homeless people: I can't decide if I should ignore him, or mention how France's history on race isn't very good.

For a business that must exploit its workforce with unlivable wages in order to make ends meet, it will slowly diminish to nothing if minimum wages are sufficiently raised. A company with a better business model will then take its place, and society as a whole will benefit in the long term. AGC

Exactly! There is no Good Guy Corporation out there just wanting to hire folks to give them a job. Head to any corporate store (or hell, even a mom and pop place) and you'll see it almost chronically understaffed. Wal-Mart, which can certainly afford to hire more people, is horrifically understaffed. If the minimum wage is increased, places may choose to lay employees off/fire them. But that falls on the business itself, not on the people earning more. But realistically, places that have to pay their employees a higher minimum wage will just increase the cost of their goods.
