Zenimax and Valve would not really commit to a VR product so Abrash and Carmack left their respective companies to go work for Oculus. Valve then realized they hosed up and went all-in on the SteamVR effort. Zenimax still really dgaf. Carmack is a genius at tech but is otherwise a libertarian dumbass, so he probably fit right in with Palmer Luckey, who by accounts was obsessively good and self-taught at tinkering with and learning about VR components.
