Someone looked at Keeping Up Appearances and decided we needed to explore its rich history of its delicately constructed vast world as if it was Game of Thrones. Also, "One Foot Out The Cradle" "One Foot In The World" and "One Foot Out The Door" are all terrible and likely names for the Meldrew Youth Times. A detective series based in Norwich called Swallow Swallow is a detective who tackles vandalism. Bit of a maverick, not afraid to break the law if he thinks it's necessary. He's not a criminal, you know, but he will, perhaps, travel 80mph on the motorway if, for example, he wants to get somewhere quickly.

I actually was talking about old detective shows with a friend at work yesterday and brought up Jonathan Creek, being younger than myself he hadn't seen it or know much about it, but my describing it as starting with a sealed room murder caused him to recall something he saw as a kid about someone killing themselves and bricking themselves up in a cellar, and it freaking him out. I said that sounded like something from Creek. Later that night he texts me to confirm that 3 episodes into the show on Netflix, it was indeed from Creek. He's digging it, I'm proud. Got him into Alan Partridge too. Going to work on Father Ted next, as I keep taunting him with the "Lovely fags" .gif when he gave up smoking.

One day I'm going to get really bored and really annoyed and write a grand effortpost on the transition of Gene Hunt from anti-hero to hero, and all the different cinematographic cues the show gives us for him and how they change over the course of those shows, and how maddening it is that the loving writers gave interviews literally saying how disturbing it was that he became a pin-up boy for the Daily Mail during the first series, and then gleefully aided and abetted that process in later years.

Of course, David Tennant's meant to have auditioned for Taggart a number of times before he got Casanova and never got a part. I remember seeing a couple of episodes of Heartbeat. One of them was about a guy in a digger unearthing an unexploded bomb which went off while a soldier was sitting next to it with a stethoscope. The other was this menacing guy in a scarecrow costume wandering around the countryside and the local town not really doing anything in particular. I'm not sure why I remember either of those things because I must have seen them more than 15 years ago.

For anyone who doesn't know Gabriel was brought in as a relatively famous soap opera actor, a guy named Todd Carty. In Eastenders and in Grange Hill he'd done some standout 'new drama' storylines. Grange Hill he took a load of drugs and in Eastenders he had AIDS. When he was in the Bill he started a relationship with a much older actor who played a fan favourite in the show. At some point during this he had a few relationships with other people and became obsessed with one who I can't remember the name of. He tried to kill the person he was obsessed with a few times. I guess this was their way of portraying both stalking and relationships between older women/younger men. It eventually ended with him revealing he was the older woman's son, the child she had given up for adoption when she was a kid and never ever mentioned at any time during the show. They'd definitely had sex by this point as well. This was sort of out of nowhere although there were a few episodes where they tried to lay the groundwork for Gabriel "ruining her life". When you consider that the Bill was a villain of the week show up until this point I still can't wrap my head around why it happened. I'll admit I watched it up until the reveal but never touched it after that. It wasn't much longer later that it ended up getting cancelled. Was Gabriel Kent before or after the whole thing where that one guy was sleeping with another guy on his wedding day to a girl who was being stalked by a serial killing journalist? My memories say after, but from what you're saying, it seems like it had to have been before. Edit: Looking it up for more specificity. The ballad of Craig and Luke. I saw the show when I was quite young, and I think it was my first exposure to how soapy television could get. It's also post-Kent, I think. Jesus it was stupid.
