i made some fermi estimates weight of unloaded tank car: 110 tonnes approximate speed: 2m/s acceleration time to 1m/s on hitting the other car: 0.1s total force applied: 1.1MN contact area: ~0.28m^2 * 2 pressure between the two cars: 1964 Pa, or ~285 psi and that's assuming it's only a single car and it is empty and it's just coasting forwards. splort

Sagebrush posted:i made some fermi estimates i like this but i think some of your numbers are just a bit off; unloaded tanker car is closer to 30 tonnes for example, also that 0.1 s i think is actually an overestimate. if we assume a train car is basically a rigid chunk of steel then the delta t is roughly the length of the train car divided by the speed of sound in steel, which ends up being something like 3.5 milliseconds so 15 MPa of instantaneous pressure upon impact, or more than 2000 PSI  (although if you assume the force gets to act through a longer distance, i.e. through a fleshy meatbag human body, then the pressure will be lower, though still quite enough to squash you like a grape getting hit by a hammer)
