You seem to have missed my point which is it literally doesn't matter if no one here understands the work that goes into making a game like that. We still get to go "That's ugly". They are asking people to spend 15 American dollars on it. They've offered it up to the masses as a piece of commercial media for consumption and comment. We all have eyes therefore we all get to go "Eh, that looks lazy and ugly". Personally, I DO understand the work that goes into making games, and I personally think the game has little merit conceptually and I think it's lazy and pandering and objectifying, so calling it ugly too is likely the least damning of my opinions on it. I get to determine what I consider praiseworthy or not and the moment you put something up for sale as a commercial product my criteria shifts up to higher standards. There's really nothing going on in it that your average indie team couldn't hash out in a few months. I mean, they get a participation trophy for Making A Thing, I guess, but my opinion is that the thing they made is derivative at best and brings nothing to merit the attention they're receiving beyond "Our robot has an rear end and stupid big tits lol". The smartest thing I can say about it is at least they were clever enough to make it a robot instead of give it a super ugly face which is what most tits and rear end pander games would've done. Being gracious is when a budding 12 year old artist draws a portrait for you and gives it to you and you appreciate it and put it on your wall. Get real, these guys are adults and they are charging money for a product and I get to point at it and say whatever I want about that product. I'm not attacking them, I'm sure they're decent and their mothers love them and they have favorite colors just like me, but they made a thing that I think is dumb and anyone in here gets to chime in about it.

Yeah and you're allowed. I feel like we're getting somewhere instead of just popping in to say "you're wrong." I happen to disagree with you once again I guess, and I'm going to buy that game because I think $15 is a fair value for how glorious it is. It's very amusing to me when people get righteous about morals over tits and rear end [specifically: objectified women] in a video game when that poo poo sells. Again I'm going to buy a copy of this game because I believe in what it is and I don't have the same hang-ups as other people apparently.

This is a good commentary on how a single person does not decide the value of a thing. When you dislike something, that's fine don't buy it. But if you go on to expect other people should also dislike it, that makes you special kinds of wrong. http://youtube.com/watch?v=mA35NJueDzk

So please gently caress off with the smuttier-than-thou shtick, especially when it's in service of defending garbage-tier porn with a child's idea of sexiness. Edit: Eh, that was a little mean. By all means enjoy your terrible robotitty game, but do sod off with the "heh, guess you're just prudes " thing, because I'm not sure Something Awful Dot Com is the place to play that card. I have no issues with porn I've edited porn comics for money and was in a gay porn comic anthology but there is a huge difference between good skillful porn and bad objectifying porn imo erotica has always been a part of art. one of my focuses in school was symbolist art and there is a ton of that, but it was, you know, well drawn and had artistic merit there's not much artistic merit to giant titty robots covered in jizz

I just wanted to quote this cause I couldn't agree more. You don't need specialized training or ability to see that something doesn't look right. A person might be unable to say why it looks wrong or have no or even terrible ideas for fixing the problem (even other artists) but if someone says something looks off to them, then there is absolutely some problem there 99.99% of the time. You don't have to act upon every critique given to you, but you should definitely consider every critique, especially the negative ones. GreatJob posted:Composition: I get that all you might want to do is practice a character and general rendering after so long, hence a standing pose and looking directly at the viewer, but try not to hack people off at the knees or other joints when you frame them in your comp. Thank you for the comments, I'm seriously trying to improve my skills, but have a hard time seeing errors in my own work (I sometimes draw asymmetrical proportions that I can't see until someone points it out to me, so criticism helps me a lot). As far as the rendering, I mostly did it zoomed into small portions of the picture (started with a small sketch then gradually doubled the canvas size occasionally as I added in more detail and refined it); I did try and zoom out and flip the canvas on occasion to see where parts were starting to have mismatched levels of shading or contrast, but I wasn't entirely able to clean it up and harmonize the different areas enough. The abs were actually even higher contrast earlier in the process - I tried to smooth them out to make them look more blended, but I guess it still needs to be blended in more, so thank you. I also like the tip about using a gradient for getting the overall shading to harmonize, that's something I feel like I should be kicking myself for not thinking of it myself. The hair was actually painted from some photo references of real braids, I had been so obsessive about getting the uniformity and pattern of the braiding right, that I totally didn't catch that I had it shaded with the light coming from the wrong direction, that's totally a failure on my part. I've never worked in this style before (all my prior art I did as a teenager and young adult was pretty much comic-book style with relatively flat shading and strong black outlines, I've never tried to do realistic shading (or anything resembling traditional painting) before. As far as 'boob plate' vs. practical, I'm aware that realistic women's plate armour essentially looks identical to men's plate armour, and had even started the initial sketch with a plain, un-contoured plastron, but I really hate covering up a bunch of fine muscles so I actually dialed the amount of armour coverage way back and put boobs on the chestplate, as I'm a big fan of the old school Boris Vallejo style of fantasy art and wanted to show off a muscular, slightly cheesecakey hero rather than have it be historically or practically accurate. I'm still working up ideas for my next piece, and it will probably be either a character in more historically accurate, full-coverage armour, or wearing no armour at all, so either way should be more appealing to those who dislike cheesy impractical fantasy armour.

Troposphere posted:objectifying 9:43 If something is uninteresting to you, that should be enough. Just say that. That's damning enough as it is. You don't need the moral crusade to temper your argument. Jesus. There's this wonderful South Park two-parter where Cartman wants to get Family Guy cancelled for insulting islam, but his real beef is with all the cutaway gags with no setup or payoff. And that second thing should BE ENOUGH of a criticism. Scribblehatch fucked around with this message at 01:36 on Oct 2, 2016 |
