I bought the new raspberry pi and I made it into a little plex server. It's still cataloging all my shows, so I haven't really had a chance to watch anything yet

I bought a sphero BB-8 off of ebay for $50, I'm getting endless enjoyment tormenting my dog with it.

It's a shame too because if they'd chase it, it'd be good exercise. I think the issue is they try to herd it and it doesn't exactly respond the way they expect it to.

Got this to mess around with: The videos that are both 360 degrees and 3D are pretty impressive looking, but there's not many of those out there. Most of the VR games suck but theres a few decent ones. Most of the enjoyment for this comes from having your friends and family try it out. There's also some VR porn on pornhub. The future is now.

Two boring books to get through this week, plus three deadlines in the next two weeks, so bought me some academic fuel: Peaty Islay whisky at a PhD student-friendly price. Perfect cure for perfectionist procrastination. I'm currently getting around 1000 written words per glass. YMMV.

Speaking of Plex stuff, I wanted to build a server not too long ago and found out the Nvidia Shield TV can now act as an official Plex Media Server, so I bought one for all my blu rays. Thing was $199 and you can plug as many USB drives into it as you want (it supports hubs). Processor is crazy good. YMMV obviously based on your network but I've been able to stream three 1080p streams at once with it and it'll even run in sleep mode. Plus it's Android so it can run game emulators too.

You just store the content on external drives and USB them in there. The Android TV itself comes in a few internal storage configs, but I went with the lowest. You could transfer the content to internal storage once it's plugged in. Theoretically you could put content on a G-Drive and then download it, or since it's Android there's apps for that. Basically what I've been doing is just putting some movies here and there on a flash drive while I continue to rip my library to a 4TB external which I'll just plug in when I'm done. Paid Plex also supports cloud stuff and it also supports NAS as well. Tim Whatley has a new favorite as of 15:46 on Oct 4, 2016 |

I'm just traveling a lot with my job so I decided to do this to access my movies wherever I am (plus I have Rokus all over my house). Buuuuut the software I am using (MakeMKV) is known for ripping Redbox blu rays. That's not necessarily my thing, but it's a thing people are certainly doing. I will say that each movie takes about 90 minutes minimum, so it's gonna be quite a long-term project. Tim Whatley has a new favorite as of 04:11 on Oct 5, 2016 |
