I have been seeing billboards and bus advertisements for The Last Guardian, that means it must be really finally happening, right?

I don't think the questions is IF VR will succeed or fail, but rather WHEN will VR take with consumers. I think it will build a solid small user base in the next couple years, but not sure if it will become widespread yet, maybe in another 5-10 years when the graphics improve and you don't need a $800+ computer to run decent VR (lets be honest, the Playstation VR will not compete with the PC based ones graphically). A lot of people think it is a gimmick like 3D TVs, but I think of it as the next TV/monitor.

It assumes an incredibly narrow definition of television. What if people want to watch a show together/ Will they all have to have their own VR device? Will it be expected people are just carrying their VR devices around together? A monitor? Do you think someone working in an office environment is going to want to completely block the world out in favor of "VR monitors" which are inevitably going to be significantly more expensive and prone to failure that regular monitors? A lot of companies use significantly outdates OSes and computers to begin with, nobody is going to significantly update for VR which offers no real significant advantages over traditional monitor/dual monitor setups. VR absolutely can find use in specific things and that wouldn't be a surprise but becoming a universally accepted thing where people are buying VR headsets instead of televisions and monitors? Really?

now, do i make a joke about how the monitor is failed tech because it didnt replace the tv, or do i joke that the monitor has replaced the tv, in this good analogy to be mad about vr for some reason

FireMrshlBill posted:I didn't mean to replace the TV or monitor, but to become accepted as a standard display device. There is no rule that limits us to one visual display medium type. Well, aside from a few niche businesses, I genuinely don't see why VR would become a standard display device. The minimal benefits it offers would be heavily outweighed by the negatives in most business and private situations. I'm sure it will eventually find a niche but I just don't see it becoming anything more than a cool bit of tech. I feel like this is basically the modern equivalent of that thing where people tried to convince people that everyone would need to have a Second Life presence because digital life was the future. I certainly remember how well Playstation Home did.

1.) New generation of VR is nothing like the junk of the past. I thought that too at first, but this the current offerings are fairly impressive and do offer a solid degree of immersion. People who think this is Virtua boy 2 need to try a set. 2.) VR isn't going to replace everything for consuming media, it is going to be a new and eventually compelling way to play games and watch concerts/movies/porn/whatever. It still has a way to go. This is like the first clutzy iPods, in 5 years imagine where things will be. 3.) The world needs bloodborne VR.

Ya, I don't expect VR to blow up overnight, but I think it will catch on and become something more than niche in the next decade or so as it becomes more immersive. rabidsquid posted:PC dudes were (are?) super hyped up for the facebook vr by the guy who loves to post trump memes I enjoy a nice anti-Hillary meme as much as I enjoy an anti-Trump meme.... but I'd still get a Vive over an Oculus On a different note, I recently got my wife to switch from using my PS4 for Blu Rays to using my XB1 because I get tired of switching discs and would rather the XB1 get more wear and tear since I prefer to game on the PS4. She mentioned that she thinks the XB1 actually looks better for Blu Rays... after giving it a look, I had to agree. What is up with that? I think the PS4 may just have a cooler color palette or something so the white balance is different, though very minimally and not enough for me to notice until we switched to using the XB1. I usually prefer cooler color palettes to warmer ones, so not sure why that would bother me here. TV settings are both set to GAME, so it shouldn't be that, though the XB1 is on a HDMI switch (I'd think that would have an negative effect if anything at all). Is this a general consensus that we are just realizing, or are we just imagining things? Oh well, I am just glad the XB1 is finally getting some use other than ~5 modern games and BC 360 games.

So I rented Mirror's Edge Catalyst and I'm having HUGE streaming issues with the title. Whole character models popping in, grates, vents, and pipes literally shifting from grey blocks inches away from me. I compared online video playthroughs and realized that this is not normal. This is the first title I've had any issues with, though my console was in my suitcase for a 40 hour road trip crosscountry for work a few months back. My console plays Uncharted 4 and NHL 17 perfectly fine. I tried reinstalling the game too. Is there a chance it could be the disk, and not my console beginning to crap out?

I love all this vr talk but please note there is a psvr thread that is currently languishing on the fourth page of Games: http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?noseen=0&threadid=3790293 The nice thing about hardware is if it sucks you can return it. I'm pretty sure I'll know by the end of the first day if it has legs. It wouldn't even be the first VR I returned to Amazon.

In the UK most places (all?) will give you a limited amount of time where you can return something if you deem it 'not fit for purpose' which could mean pretty much anything including 'I don't like it'. It doesn't extend to media stuff usually but for any hardware.
