Yeah, that's all true. But if they want to be authentic and given that there are barely any fluent speakers of Ainu at all nowadays except for the elderly, I would be 100% fine with using an 80 year old woman for Asirpa's voice, though! In other GK news, it looks like they're opening up a "Golden Kamuy restaurant" for one day only in Shibuya in September. http://www.cinra.net/news/20160812-goldenkamui (link is in Japanese, but it has cool pictures) They've got rabbit citatap stew, deer and bear meat, and komochi konbu, but it looks like raw brains didn't make the menu. If anybody is gonna be in Tokyo on 9/22 and has a lot of confidence in their ability to get a reservation, you should go for it! I wonder how common horseriding was between the Ainu. Kiroranke is an Ainu from the Amur River region in mainland Asia and as far as I'm concerned the native peoples there aren't frequent horseriders. Though the Mongols invaded that region plus Sakhalin and clashed with the Ainu in the 13th century, so who knows...

I really hope that "Oh poo poo, bears!" never stops being a thing in this series. Just have the climactic final showdown disrupted by a sloth of bears, or have the map reveal that all the treasure is in a cave that infinitely spawns bears. I just love that bears are (appropriately) incredibly lethal.

The author throws in so many references to random things that it's nearly impossible to catch them all This one from a few chapters back is especially hilarious though.

Man, I know this manga is pretty critically acclaimed and all that, but how is this not more popular? It does everything right. It somehow manages to be one of the funniest loving things I've read in ages, and have some intense, well done action topped up with good artwork and great characters. Like, this is as good as it gets really.

As a random aside does anyone else know of any good manga that do gore as well as this does? The artist makes various maulings and sword wounds look brutal as gently caress like Sugimoto's skin actually visibly getting stretched and torn, or the dude cutting a bear's loving face off without having to cover everything in rediculous amounts of blood or gibby bits for effect.

I'm not really a gore fan so when stuff gets too into throwing giblets around I usually stop reading, but I guess here it's used sparingly enough and in a realistic way so while gross momentarily it doesn't feel gratuitous. That's a pretty rare balance.

Captain Invictus posted:it's up there for sure! It's a historical piece propped up against the backdrop of an era I'm really interested in with a lot of fun cultural notes and asides. It's brutal and unflinching, yet hilarious and sometimes even heartwarming. Its characters are all both incredibly cool and incredibly silly, and the mechinations of the plot enable the author to do pretty much whatever he wants with them. It's well-drawn, well-paced, and excells at playing with its own tone. It's a stir-fry of guiltly pleasures, and if it were available in America I'd already own it all.

Yeah that's what I find so interesting about it, I'm not particularly bothered by exploding blood fountains and the like but the more realistic style seems a lot more tasteful and impactful to me than typical "add more blood and maybe some organs" stuff. Thought OTOH I just got caught up on Keyman and Dorohedoro so maybe I'm just in the mood for some more awful pointless violence
