It's mostly the funny voice. He did keep the weird alternate reality but at least this time it isn't a rape dungeon and is about George and JJ murdering him or something. But it's mostly that voice. I imagine I could paint for hours to that voice in the background the same way I paint to Bob Ross.

Yeah the subplots are bad but the opinions are good. No one had really offered up a detailed autopsy on why the prequels were so drat awful before then. And yes the basement stuff is cringe-y but if it was just Mike reading all that stuff it would've been even more unwatchable.

Bonus points for pissing off CD denizens.

Yeah, it works on the same level as Francis did (the youtube wow addict character).

I think the RLM guys have a good grasp of film theory stuff, and the breakdown of the problems in tone, writing and direction of the prequels was light years ahead of the criticism of the prequels at the time. The dungeon stuff feels like it was to catch more attention than a straight-ahead review but it was usually the weakest part of those videos. Mike's voice acting is solid and I'll always have a soft spot for Palpatine talking about pantaloons.

On topic: this sunday we had a get together with some veterans and new players for Xwing. We all put together 50-60 point lists, and my buddy and I did a 1v1 battle which was a lot of fun. Another friend was the Xwing expert and put together a IG-2000 build for 50 points that decimated the three other new players he was playing against. I had to remind him that the smartest thing that Games Workshop does is go easy on new players when they demo the game.

My question to you folks: How would you build a fun, simple to fly and flexible 60 point rebel, imperial, scum list for people playing their 2nd or 3rd game of Xwing?

Tried to put together some lists with familiar names/ships for Star Wars fans, with 2 ships or more

=Rebel starter set=
Gold Squadron Pilot (24)
Y-Wing (18), R2 Astromech (1), Ion Cannon Turret (5)
Wedge Antilles (34)
X-Wing (29), BB-8 (2), Predator (3), Integrated Astromech (0)

=Imperial Starter set=
Darth Vader (32)
TIE Advanced (29), TIE/x1 (0), Squad Leader (2), Advanced Targeting Computer (1)

“Backstabber” (16)

Academy Pilot (12)

=Scum Starter Set=
Mandalorian Mercenary (41)
Firespray-31 (35), Recon Specialist (3), Predator (3), Long Range Scanners (0)

Kaa’to Leeachos (19)
Z-95 Headhunter (15), Ion Pulse Missiles (3), Veteran Instincts (1), Guidance Chips (0)

I think people on their 3rd game are ready to be introduced to some of the more interesting concepts beyond point and shoot.

Rebel
Luke Skywalker - BB8 - Crackshot - Proton Torpedoes - Guidance Chips (Teaches pre-move Barrel Roll, crackshot greatness, secondary weapons)
Gold Squadron - Ion Cannon Turret - Bomb Loadout w/Seismic Charges (Teaches about turrets, Ion control, bombs)

Empire
Darth Vader - Juke - Title - Accuracy Corrector (Teaches modifying rules for defender/attacker, turtle power of Focus+Evade+AGI3)
Backstabber (Teaches firing arcs)
Academy Pilot (Teaches blocking and Initiative when facing off against Scum player)

Scum
Zealous Recruit - Autothrusters (Teaches Boost, Autothruster range control, Initiative with Empire player)
Mandalorian Merc - Fearlessness - Inertial Dampeners - 4-LOM (Teaches adding dice, the stop move, Ion effect on large ships)

This is a rough draft I just thought up. Can anyone think of anything else that should be introduced?

One of the things I wished I learned earlier in X-Wing was the great and terrible power of swarms.
Setting someone up with Howlrunner/Stealth Device/Predator + 3 naked Academy Pilots and giving them some help in the setup phase to get a good 2x2 pinwheel will teach both players the great and terrible power of focused fire, and that the guy on the business end of the swarm is probably going to eat a lot of damage.

Maybe that's for game 4 though, but the rules of it are simple enough (everyone gets a single re-roll, but when Howlrunner dies the rerolls stop). Flying in pinwheel is easy squeezy, because as long as you don't bump other ships they can all just dial in the same maneuver forever. Plus formation flying looks really cool.

Oh also, last night I set up the below list and gave it a whirl, and it seemed pretty fun. Just looking for any suggestions if possible, as I haven't used ARCs before now, and haven't used T-65 X-Wings in a while, either. I think I'm definitely going to have to get rid of Lone Wolf and either swap it out for something of the same price, or give him VA/adaptability and spend the points elsewhere (or save it for a bid, I guess), and I only really threw the targeting astromech on Wedge because I couldn't find something else that looked better for the price, in the short amount of time I had to create the list. Might pay to change it to an R2 and give Luke Pred or something I guess, or just change it to an R2 and give Luke adaptability, to have a decent bid.

quote:

Thane Kyrell — ARC-170 26
Recon Specialist 3
R5-P9 3
Alliance Overhaul 0
Ship Total: 32

Wedge Antilles — X-Wing 29
Predator 3
Targeting Astromech 2
Integrated Astromech 0
Ship Total: 34

Luke Skywalker — X-Wing 28
Lone Wolf 2
R2-D2 4
Integrated Astromech 0
Ship Total: 34

Total: 100

EDIT: Oh yeah, I'm also not sure about using Thane over Shara (I think she's called?), but his ability isn't too bad for the price (especially as I can often get a TL+double focus each turn)

Give Wedge BB8+PTL instead of TA + Pred

Makes him virtually immune to bumps and you get focus + TL every time you do a green move.

It's a fun and hilarious range control thing to reveal a 1 straight, barrel roll to left or right as far backwards as possible, and then execute the 1 straight. It's like executing a one-half straight maneuver with some left and right shifting.

Same thing with a 1-bank, only you've rotated 45 degrees, too. It makes you virtually impossible to block with a small-base ship, and a large-base ship has to be sitting in *exactly* the right spot.

If you're already stressed from PTL from the round before, BB-8 doesn't let you barrel roll right?

If you're stressed at start of turn, yeah it won't work but normally, if you PtL off the BB-8 barrel roll, you'll then shed the PtL stress after actually executing the green maneuver on your dial.

No, I don't believe so. You'd need to do the green move first, in order to relieve the stress - but by that point you've already missed the opportunity to perform BB-8's barrel roll.

EDIT: Beaten. So yeah, it'll basically only happen if you flip or run over debris.

If you're already stressed, that's correct. But if you do it right, you'll never be stressed from PTL if you have BB8.

Reveal green.
Do BB8 barrel roll.
Trigger PTL off the roll.
Take PTL action.
Take stress from PTL.
Perform green maneuver.
Remove stress (that you just got from PTL).
Perform your regular action.

End result: three actions, one of which was a roll, no stress.

If you start stressed from like a K-turn or something you can't do this.

Hey folks.

Just started getting into this.

So I'm looking at dice and there doesn't seem to be much variation there.

I know there's some sort of promo/tourney poo poo but those seem to be extremely limited in quantity and extremely high in price.

I get that third party dice will probably be a no-no at tourneys, but should I want to buy some, are there any good suggestions? Just trying to put some variety in without going too insane. (I mean seriously :eyepop:, who the gently caress pays 200 dollars for a set of 6 acrylic dice?).

I saw some lovely translucent ones that were reminiscent to some tourney ones, but past that, there's maybe two separate color schemes that seem to be available :psyduck:

If you look closely, the promo dice that FFG give out at the tourneys are much more uniform. The air bubble probably forms when the 3rd party that makes em pours them into a mold. There are some other processes that let people make dice, but at a low cost, there just probably isn't as much QA to take the time to shake containers and remove the bubbles from the (still hot) acrylic/plastic.

While we're at it, I also saw http://www.litko.net/categories/Supported-Board-Games/Star-Wars-X-Wing/

which has some pretty cool templates and tokens. Thinking about saving up for those since the paper ones are piling up.

The Tritko ones are annoying since they are clearly designed to mimic the look of the actual regional dice yet FFG has done nothing about it. I only care in the case of wanting to sell my regionals dice in a market where there's a close counterfeit.

It's the opposite. The FFG ones have bubbles that 3rd party ones don't. These are my FFG promo dice from the last 2 years:

I think it was exactly that. I was puzzled by the weapons engineer, because I'd tried the same two arcs with weapons engineer on Shara and found it not bad, but not amazing, and on the drive back mentioned this to a friend (who is a much better player and had kept me waiting by selfishly making the cut). Yep and Norra should have no shortage of focus tokens thanks to PtL and Kyle. Assuming she has a stress from the previous turn, she can get a TL and 2xfocus every turn, not counting Shara's TL. What I like about this list is that Norra's gimmick still works without Shara and vice versa, but together it's that much stronger.
