If you get a good arm and not a piece of poo poo you won't need extra width. My crappy monoprice arm requires extra wood blocks to be at all stable but my nice rebranded ergotron was totally stable on my 3/4 inch plywood desk. Also using one of those cheapass Lack end tables for the PC is the best way to do it, it's such a pleasing height to have it at for some reason

I have a nice mount but since my old ikea desk was essentially cardboard I glued a piece of wood to the underside and it helped a lot, was about 8in long and 4in wide so it really spread it across the desk.

also when I tried clamping the monoprice mount onto my particleboard ikea desktop the force was all directed in one spot and tried to punch a hole through it so I had to stick a hard clear piece of plastic undre the top part, also droops forward a lot because my monitor is so heavy. Just don't loving buy the monoprice arm it sucks

Thanks for the quick reply Humerus posted:That's what I have now I mean it might be fine if you have a very light monitor and a very thick, solid desk but I don't have either of those so it causes issues. I got my LX knockoff bundled with my tablet monitor for really cheap but this amazon branded thing looks exactly the same as it and the regular ergotrons do and seems to be well reviewed. Having the bigger base part that clamps onto the desk felt like it made the biggest difference for stability https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics...ron+monitor+arm

Only scrubs have icons in their desktop (recycling bin notwithstanding.) You could always get cute and post a photo here with your screen turned on, kill 2 birds with one stone.

Yeah, a PC desktop should be treated like a literal desktop. Stuff you're working on right this minute can go there, then you file it away somewhere else when you're done. Unless you're a dirty slob.

anyone have tips about reducing monitor shake? I have a new ikea aldis desk and a samsung U28E590D - every keystroke results in a bit of shake and it's super distracting.

Yeah, just treat it like any other folder, it's more versatile to just have a window you can pull up at will without making everything disappear. Edit: But whichever way someone wants to work, that's fine, of course (just as long as you don't do that thing where you stare for several minutes at a desktop full of icons before you can find the thing you were looking for) HalloKitty fucked around with this message at 17:22 on Sep 26, 2016 |

well why not posted:anyone have tips about reducing monitor shake? I have a new ikea aldis desk and a samsung U28E590D - every keystroke results in a bit of shake and it's super distracting. Make sure all your fittings are done well; you may need to partially re-build your desk. Does the desk itself have any bend or bow under weight? If it does you can try screwing a 2x4 into the bottom to reinforce it. Those legs look like the absolute wobbliest, as they're just poles flange mounted to the desk. You may be hosed. Looking at how they're made, I could suggest using something like hot glue or epoxy on the bolts connecting the flanges to the poles, as that looks like the problem would occur. Apparently, some people say filling the legs with sand also helps, which wouldn't surprise me. Googling returns plenty of people with the same issues. Aside from that maybe sorbothane feet for your keyboard? https://amzn.com/B0062AX432 Wasabi the J fucked around with this message at 19:52 on Sep 26, 2016 |

What desks/chairs come highly recommended? My desk is pretty small now, and I like to do a lot of digital painting, and definitely need more room for my tablet + keyboard. I'm looking to spend around 300-400 bucks on a decent desk. I know that chairs can get very expensive, are there any alternatives or are the ergonomic ones eventually the way to go?

You're going to be spending a pretty penny for a good chair ($700+USD) unless you can score a used one on Craigslist from a liquidator or something. Are you in the US? Ikea has a lot of option depending on what you want. I was able to piece together a 72x28" table using a butcher block as the table and drawers for the legs for <$200.

Honestly, I judge Elsa more for the poor cable management and ludicrous numbers of icons on the desktop than the fanart. At least both characters are over 18, afaik, and the art's not bad.

My plan is to create a wall of pixels so you can't see the cables. That counts as a sort of cable management, right?
