Of all the things that annoyed me about Opie's show yesterday, for some reason it was the repeated mention of the afternoon timeslot taking away his time with his son that rubbed me wrongest (his constant trampling was a close second). A man complaining that he is being forced to spend three hours a day away from his son in exchange for a dream job and a million-ish dollars is the most babyish, pathetic whinging I've ever heard. He is incapable of connecting with his audience.

Yea I'm sure the common man can easily relate to the pain of suddenly having taken away free time to spend with your kids all day, 7 days a week in order to make a living :qq:

Reminds me of the final Fez meltdown and it's just unreal. You're being paid a king's ransom to be entertaining for 3 hours a day, and he's just a mopey piece of poo poo for months on end. Crying and begging Ron not to end the show, rather than doing his actual job. People listening would kill to have Opie's job, and he just doesn't give a gently caress and puts in the minimum effort. And now he's reaping what he sows.

I always thought "weeping on-air Fez" was a character, mostly because I refuse to believe that someone could be that hosed up that publicly.

Fez being B.L. to the point of creeping out Ron is possible one of the final true meltdowns. And this is ignoring Steakgate where Fez alienated the Centaur and Shelby as well, and the sad attempt a month or two before Fez's 'retirement' when Sirius made him and Ron go on the air together after Chris and Shelby were told not to do anything on-air to make Fez happy, ending up with Fez going on about how he can literally do nothing 'because he has a contract' and Fez openly saying how much he hated the audience.

I remember it being the other way around. Chris and Shelb were just having fun poking the big cat for bringing in burgers instead of steak. Then Fez got legitimately upset and attacked them instead of going with it.

Part of me wants to believe this totally. I can imagine Todd sitting on the porch of his house with his wife and Paul O and getting a good chuckle while Todd nurses a glass of whiskey to settle a good meal of hummus and veggies. "Yeah the fire detector thing was just a spur of the moment. I actually had a bit written out and Ron was freaking over the fire detector and I tried to spin him away from it and then....then the gold wrote itself. Sometimes, it just works. It just works." It would be the biggest, sweetest con since Jace Connors and Deagle Nation.

Really, I don't want to imagine a dying Fez in his final days surrounded by his family as he finally has to go in for multiple heart surgeries while having to shamefully look at gay porn behind closed doors in his own house. I want to believe in a better story than the one that we're given.

And honed incredible skills at being both funny and devious all while doing this grunt work. Some of the poo poo that Sam pulled off was incredible to me even while he was just that guy in the background who never scrolled the computer where Opie wanted it

It's only a shortcut in the frankly insane Opie-centric view where not as many people would have been exposed to Sam if he did something else. But poo poo, the guy is clever and hard working, he would have found SOMETHING.

Let's not forget Sam standing by Opie when the going got rough. Remember when Bennington tried to tell Sam to blaze his own way in radio because he shouldn't be Opie's guy, and Sam actually made a valiant (if misguided) excuse for it? Sam Roberts may be annoying and unable to google anything, but Jesus Christ he deserves this. Special Delivery was underrated, and Sam has done some really good stuff. Plus, he's loved around the building! Remember on one of the last O&A Christmases where he took various freaks into that lady's radio show like Lady Di and Sandy Kane? Or how he wrangled Lady Di during her come down from crack/booze/kerosene?

gently caress Opie. At least Sam can sign a loving contract on time and not play games. I'm glad Opie is on his way out in a lovely timeslot with a paycut, he deserves a whole hell of a lot worse.

I've been listening to Opie since the last century, and have great memories of getting home from my first poo poo job and turning on the radio in my first poo poo apartment so I could listen to women run their phone across their crotch so we could all guess what their pubic hair looked like. I have actual sepia-tinted Christmas memories of the Homeless Shopping Spree. I still can point out all the hack bits on morning zoo radio thanks to Jocktober. I cheered for various idiot interns doing assaults on the media, and while never a Pest myself, was happy they existed. I have timed out long drives to match when the various incarnations of his show are on the air.

But goddamn. You put him all alone in charge of a show, and Opie sucks. And the best we can look forward to is some stories about how cool he was at Geneseo, or how much it snowed in Buffalo, or how the bars on Long Island used to be.

It's the end of an era, and I gotta get car radio with bluetooth so I can listen to podcasts on my commute.
