This animation will be a bit lengthy because my friend and I just completed a full short - it's a sequel to one we did two summers back that got a good reception. I like the way it turned out, but now that the honeymoon period is over maybe someone smarter than us at this kind of thing wants to look over it and tell us what we did right and wrong? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFA9fBhIeR8

hi im taking an animation class this semester and besides the first ball bounce exercise, these sacks of flour are the first "thing" we got to animate: the first one was done in class in harmony and is still a bit unfinished. it's supposed to be jumping across the stage three times: https://a.pomf.cat/glefaq.webm and we're supposed to be doing a jump cycle next week, but I mocked one up in csp just now here: The first bounce doesn't seem to have a proper impact and could be snappier, but I couldn't figure out what timing was in my sleep addled state. Anyone else can critique?

I can't think of any specific critique to say other than dang, I really like the feel of weight and squash/stretch you've got going. Even your concept of form and overlapping shapes is really solid, I think you're gonna go far

It's a dumb but effective trick to make the impact punchier. When the sack hits, you have some kind of "splash" linework. I don't think that works very well, I'm not sure what it's supposed to communicate, but it isn't consistent with the physical characteristics of the sack. I did a revision with the pre-impact frame removed and a couple differences on impact in red:

Great advice but apply it to the secondary bounce as well. The impact is great but it's losing loads of energy. I'd drop a frame on the way back up and down. Also, you're deforming the sack towards a squash before impact which steals a lot of snap- if anything I would advise stretching slightly on a big move frame before directly deforming into a squash on impact. It might also be more appealing to settle into an asymmetrical pose? You can "twin" even with a floursack. Solid, though!

Brilliant design!! Although I find it a bit jarring that the arm holding up the can of soda(?) isn't moving at all. Maybe having it move very slightly as a secondary motion might help bring it all together. Similar to how her glasses are bobbing up and down a frame too late.

The staggering on the "bop" across the design just didn't work super duper but it was a pro bones charity gig that they gave me only a few days to finish so eh. I didn't get a chance to check out your stuff yet bitmap. My hard drive failed last week and I've been on my tablet until this last weekend, but I will! Since I'm a glutton for punishment, I did more cut out practice in Opentoonz. I think I'm done with cutout rigging for now. I did the one character in Hot Foot and thought, "Now I can do an entire group!" I'll be going back to traditional frame by frame raster layers for my next project. ... 10 characters, 15 work days, failed hard drive. I wanted to do a little comedy bit every time a new door opened, but due to time constraints this is all I was able to do. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDEqKCHjdS4

So I don't make animation (anymore, though I'd like to get back into it) but I make things ABOUT animation. It's my favorite subject. I do a series on YouTube called Cartoons 101 about the history of animation. It was featured on The AV Club a couple months ago (https://www.avclub.com/article/pocket-history-robin-williams-wisecracking-genie-a-239895). Part 2 of my series on Spielberg's contributions to the medium of animation came out today (part one: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=x6VtCDr6ZGc part two: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=wRHgq0TtLSk). Animation is my favorite, favorite thing, so I hope you guys like it.

That is excellent. I downloaded Flipaclip for my android tablet. I haven't done anything worth noting. And thanks for the kind words for my girlfriend. I showed her your posts and she's appreciative. I think we are done with loopdeloop for now. For some reason they took the song out of her animation and put in a lame generic guitar piece so anyone at the screenings didn't even get to see it as intended. Those dudes... Oh well, we are going to work together on a short to get our workflow down before we tackle a big project. We'll post our shorts as they come along!

Maybe I've been using pedantic wrong! I think the correct words are "incompetent boobs". Meh. Meh I say! I'm sure they mean well of course, but this just baffled me. If anyone wants to see what they did skip to 18.10 and take a listen. https://vimeo.com/185729707 All the time she took timing the lip syncing and the finger picking to the actual music (it was the first time she had done sound scrubbing)... She was gutted when she saw that. That has her name on it, but to her, that's not the cartoon she made. Oh well, moving on. Always draw more. An Ounce of Gold posted:If anyone wants to see what they did skip to 18.10 and take a listen. Yikes. I get your frustration. The concern was almost certainly copyright, however. They once turned back an entry of mine because I had a midi of Gary Numans "Cars" playing. It feels pretty pedantic but you gotta play it like it's professional work. vv

Depending on where it shows up online they may have to deal with copyright scrapers that automatically flag and mute or takedown videos, it's just one of those things. Even theoretically public domain music can run afoul of copyright scrapers so the safest choice is usually to go with pre-cleared music

That was original music that I wrote sang for her. Honestly, I doubt it has anything to do with copyright since if you watched the entire thing you'll notice that her song was the only one that had the audio taken out. There's no copywritten midi piece here. There's a bunch of original music in that compilation loop including the organ piece I made for my short. The original and theirs are hosted on Vimeo so we know it's not a audio/website issue She even wrote out the lyrics to the song on the main submission site and even credited me. They knew it was made for her cartoon. Looking at the video and the song they chose it seems clear to me that it was less of a copyright situation and more someone thought they were being clever editing it to the song they chose. It's just frustrating because they are asking artists to submit for free and then they butchered her syncing and changed the tone of her short. It's supposed to be an old-timey turn of last century American Folk song. By changing it to college guitar rock it changes the feeling you get watching it. It takes away our part of the world we are trying to share with others and replaces it with generic rock feeling... I can understand giving something over to a production company and it coming back different because it was a team build. Basically I'm saying that wasn't a temp track for production! Meh, I say again. Hopefully my post doesn't come out as whiny or angry. It's just a slight disappointment for her after her handwork. She just feels like she was misrepresented by loopdeloop is all. 0 E: Happy ending! She sent an email basically saying what I did here and the guy running it actually apologized and changed the edit to include the original song. It's too late for any of the screenings except LA, but that's pretty cool of him to change it. An Ounce of Gold fucked around with this message at 02:26 on Oct 10, 2016 |

Yeah, the characters are from a children's novel (think Captain Underpants) I'm working on and I think I'm gonna write out the full scenario as a mini-story. The story doesn't really fit any of my current story plans. Basic synopsis is tall robotgirl (Vera) got a secret admirer letter in her desk, but she dropped it after the bell. Short robotgirl (Marie) finds it and, despite being rivals, wants to help set Vera and her admirer up (Marie can't resist romantic crap). The GIF is shortly after Vera figures out the letter is missing
