I didn't really notice any difference, and I only just finished S1. Maybe I'm just deaf.

Anyway, episode was real good. I agree with what Davincie said in the Season thread about Eupho's slow pacing not being the best fit for a double-length premier like this, but pacing quibbles aside I really liked everything on display here. It's KyoAni and Eupho doing the things that are always best about KyoAni and Eupho, and of course EEEEEEEEEEEE KUMIKO AND REINA LOOK SO PERFECT AND HAPPY AND IN LOVE IM GONNA CRY :swoon:

Seriously though, that fireworks scene was loving great. Kumiko and Reina need to go on more dates. I also got a good chuckle out of Reina laying down hot shade on Shuichi, even if Kumiko didn't catch it.

I didn't notice Reina sounding different but Kumiko's voice definitely sounded lower.

The introduction of the oboe when they introduced Mizore was great, I used to play oboe and its quite accurate.

The slow pacing wasn't a problem for me, they needed to both reintroduce the main cast and the new characters, also the first episode in taking place in something a lull for the band itself.

The episode was gorgeous beyond that and Reina continues to be great.

The voice acting felt different for me, yeah. Sounds more...realistic I guess. They sound like people in real life instead of anime characters.

Ganbatte Shuichi! Kumiko reacted with indifference as opposed to annoyance this time!

If Shuichi wants to get with the ladies, he ought to try being a more interesting character than Plank from Ed, Edd, n' Eddy. :colbert:

Euphonium is so so good!

Dav was right that it was a bit slow, but it was still really good. ...Dav is also right about their voices, or at least Kumiko's, which caught my attention from her first line. They sound good, though, so it's OK.

I really don't blame Asuka for being all "gtfo", it's pretty lovely to want to rejoin the club once things start going well for it. I mean, sure, there's probably big time ~drama~ that complicates the situation, but from what we know her reaction makes a lot of sense, and I'd kind of expect most of the upperclassmen to be against the quitters rejoining.

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaa I love their eyes so much, they're not as sparkly as LL eyes, but they have such rich colors. They're so pretty! Pretty eyes are my second favorite part of modern anime, right after pretty hair.

I loved this snarky little scene.

K-ON did not survive the transition to the college years, nothing ever does.

Euphonium S2 is looking pretty, pretty good so far. I think the story's portrayal of Asuka is very interesting, in that at first blush it appears we are meant to think of her as a charismatic leader but the more the story progresses the more it seems like she's just sort of vindictive and, I dunno, maybe cowardly? She continuously goes out of her way to actually take responsibility for things, and more often than not just exacerbates the problem(s) at hand by either not nipping things in the bud right away or trying to sweep it under the rug without solving whatever underlying problem there might be, though I suppose the other 3rd years are also at fault in this situation by just letting it fester on and on to the point of obvious distraction.

I feel like the President and the Vice President have a very beneficial power dynamic, actually.

Like, imagine you're the President, and you have to juggle a ton of important responsibilities that only you can handle because you have the highest authority. But then there's other, smaller things, that should also require your authority to decide on since these small things could still have an effect on the whole band you're ultimately responsible for. Wouldn't it be nice to have someone whose judgment you can trust to give your level of authority in handling the minor things?

Thus, the Vice President. The president handles big things like making sure every section has a classroom reserved for practice, officially speaking to faculty on behalf of the students, organizing events and fundraisers, basically big boring adult poo poo that needs to be done.
If you're a band member and have a small problem, like petty drama that's not important enough for the perpetually busy President, you go to the Vice President!

If you ever get the feeling Asuka is the real leader, that's just because she has free time to reach out to students and worry about morale, and you just never see how busy the President is offscreen.

This is so good, it didn't miss a beat in going to a second season.

The part where they were discussing where to take rests and breathe brought back a lot of memories.

OP/ED wasn't as good as season 1 but that is a high bar. It's still very good.

So excited for this season! :neckbeard:

I really enjoyed this episode. Yeah, maybe it was a little overly long but they needed the time to set up the characters and arc for the season. For the record, I think Asuka was right in closing the door on what's-her-face, and Reina provided the correct justification--if she wanted to keep playing, she shouldn't have quit in the first place. Tossing in a new member, especially one that has a whole lot of ~drama~ attached to her, would only screw up the dynamics of the band at a moment where they all need to be on the same page. Of course, I don't have the whole picture and knowing storytelling like I know storytelling it's going to turn out that she had a perfectly good reason for leaving and Asuka will have a change of heart, or something.

I really liked seeing all their music sheets covered in notes and notations and such, but it made me wish one of the woodwinds sitting towards the front had doodles drawn on their sheet for the rest of the class to giggle at.

Asuka going flat-expression seems to translate to "gently caress your band drama, I ain't gonna put up with that poo poo." Can't blame her for that.

I'm the lead trumpet player, playing loud and high is all I know how to do.

Initial thoughts:

1) The tuning slides of the brass instrument models are now actually pulled out a realistically reasonable amount. The band nerd fanservice begins strong this season...

2) The Concert Bb scale played during the commercial eyecatch was recorded in such a way to pickup all the valve clicks and hissing noises you'd hear as if you were sitting right next to the person playing in a normal band room.

:gizz: everywhere already

3) Being oboe status: still suffering

4) Asuka: still the bestest best, and now even bester given that she has an awesome mother hen bitch mode.

5) Music is already great, can't wait for the performances

6) Everything is great, welcome back, show :allears:

I didn't mind the pacing of this episode at all, maybe if every episode was double-length it'd get tedious but just this once was fine.

I'd like to see more introductions to the instruments like the oboe though, that was fun.

drat this remains a beautiful show. Has Kumiko been smoking cigarettes since the end of the last season? I agree that her voice sounds "off." Not bad, just different.

I didn't really mind the slower pace here; it's good to get a bit of a recap.

That the fireworks festival turned a bona fide date, complete with the jealous trashing of other suitors, had me literally laughing as I watched.

Honestly, I think the slow pace really worked? It gave everything in the episode a lot of room to breathe. Eupho is a show that excels at tiny character beats and little details.

Three things:
1. I'm so glad mini-Sapphire had a cameo.

2. I totally don't remember that flashback of Shuichi asking Kumiko out to the festival actually happening. Which episode was it last season?

3. Outro visuals kind of remind me of K-on for some reason.

great write-up, and confirmation that they directed kumiko's va to be more naturalistic. guess that shaped around when the movie was made.

Actually one of the funnier things reading people's reactions to season one was coming across the occasional "Kumiko makes funny noises!" in between all the stuff about the character drama and romantic subtext.

I was OK with the double-length episode despite the pacing, since it was still over 45 straight minutes of pure Euphonium and that's exactly what I wanted to get back to this show with. They could be sitting around fiddling with their instruments for 45 minutes and I'd still love it. :v:

Just from looking at those weird noise compilations I can already tell I would really like it if directors would stop forcing women to act like squeaky fkcunig mouses when they voice act. Japanese women do not sound like mice!

That cooking show with the kid who sounds like a kid is also gets props for this same reason. are there any other shows that let women use a natural sounding voice?

I seem to remember Sasami Magical Girl Club (the 2006 series) having more natural sounding voices than most, but it's not a terribly good show despite that.
