My favorite part of Mori I think is how it handles the dudes gigantic mistake and the effect it had on his life.

He's not presented favorably but it also adequately illustrates how he came to be like that and how the fear of not understanding people cause him to self-isolate entirely.

I was just reading this random BL manga off my shelf, Future Lovers by Saika Kunieda and it's surprisingly cute and good for what it is, really. But the two main characters literally have hosed off-panel by the third page and are loving again by page 5-6. I should add that this is an 8-chapter, 2-volume, 350-page yaoi title. And this is not some all-out pornfest that's one sex scene after another perforated by random dialogue (that's bara) but rather in this there are entire chapters with barely any sex, and just lots of character-building and angst and emotional love stuff that generally either works or fails horribly.

And I just find that, well, interesting. In shounen-ai you are much more likely to see stuff like tension over a kiss or the first time having sex (and even in some yaoi titles, sure). But in a lot of yaoi sex is just a given.

I like when they make a joke out of it, like the characters confess and then one of them is like "OH poo poo does this mean we have to have sex now?!!"

e: also Future Lovers is so cute, I've read it 2 or 3 times. I really love the ones where they have to tell the family and there's conflict but eventually the folks come around (however I like the ones with supportive families too!)

Say, are there any manga or anime where a Same sex couple is prominent in the show, but the show is not actually about same sex romance? I really like that stuff, but I don't necessarily want a show that only focuses on that exclusively.

Where the main pair into each other as well? I'm pretty sure it wasn't explicit if they were, but I was wondering if they also had, like, a thing going on.

There's some subtext there, and I'd lean towards "yes", but that's in addition to the actual couple.

In any case it's a great show.

What Did You Eat Yesterday by Fumi Yoshinaga is a cooking manga focused on a gay couple. Maybe a little more on the romance side, though? It's licensed by Vertical.

Speaking of Yoshinaga, in Antique Bakery two of the guys get together, but that might just be in doujinshi, not the main story.

I think What Did You Eat Yesterday is a fair recommendation, though it does veer into romance - you have to forgive Yoshinaga a bit given that she really did a *lot* of shounen-ai and even some legit yaoi (Ichigenme for instance) before she broke through with What Did You Eat Yesterday.

I wanted to add, I finished the first volume of this (taking my time with it) but I *really* freaking love it. This is the type of yaoi that I just *adore* - stuff with realistic guys who live in the real world and have to deal with reality and human problems and the reality of *actually* being gay or queer or whatever and the ramifications of that. Of course, it has to be at least fairly well written, but usually it is if the author is willing to tackle that stuff maturely.

I also have to say that I *love* that the seme is (by yaoi standards) a bit of a "bear" in terms of body type (hence the pun in his name, Kumagaya, I suppose), and that this is what the femmy uke is into. And when we see the straight guy the uke was crushing on in college, he's also this goofy big bear-type guy with body hair and facial hair.

This is SO rare in yaoi, you generally have to go to bara to get big barrel-chested guys with square jaws and any inkling of body hair. Given that I am physically a total uke stereotype and have a thing for body hair and excessively masculine guys at times (well, they often have a thing for me, even some of the ones who claim to be "straight") so I *really* tend to appreciate and find it both more accessible and frankly hotter when the femmy uke is paired with a seme who is more of a *real guy* physically - like in this manga!

Jesus, you know - I just realized that probably the reason I identify with this particular manga is because I dated a guy a lot like the seme in this for 2 years. He was a psychiatrist, but worked as a professor at a local university - same age as me, but he was a big bear of a guy, and well, I'm the total uke stereotype. Like the character in this book his parents died/abandoned him when he was young and he was raised by his grandparents, and he had a very old-fashioned perception of a family (and other things) and ultimately wanted a family with kids and everything. Rough mutual break-up - we were together for 2 years, though we still are friends and see each other now and then.

so this is pretty cool, enough that I'm linking directly to it even though this is a very NSFW link: Harada - Piercings
This is now the third version of this one-shot that's come out, and this one has a big page of translation notes to explain why they made the choices they did. It was interesting to read the other versions and compare them -- one was a very literal translation but the dialogue ended up being very stiff and unnatural, and the second was (possibly) less accurate but was way more readable. I haven't read through this version yet, just spotted it in my update list and saw the new TN notes but thought this might be of interest to Harada readers. I also think it says a lot about the story that people were invested in it enough to translate it three times.

A couple of Harada collections were uploaded together where previously they were just loose chapters floating around as well, I'm not sure if there are any new chapters or not since I haven't read through them yet but I'm probably going to re-read at least part of them. Some of them are the Messiah story which has never been one that I was really interested in though.

You know, I just clicked that and read it without reading the paragraph you wrote. But as I was reading the story, I really could not help but admire the hell out of the precision and coldness of the translated character's inner dialogue (which is what most of it consist of and is obviously so key) and it's really perfect for the sort of offbeat sexuality inherent to piercing culture being represented here... At least, it kinda seems that way to me.

And of course it's incredibly well-drawn - both of the guys look utterly gorgeous and perfect. Talk about tasteful and flowing panel design - this thing is a masterpiece. It is about as explicit as any yaoi you're bound to see, though. Which makes no difference to me, because this isn't really a pornographic story, per se - at least not in my opinion. It just uses sexuality to tell a human story. Quite well done.

It's not really my *thing* though - piercings, I mean. They... honestly kinda gross me out a *little* in real life when they show up in, say, genitalia. I'm OK with pretty much anything else but that sort of... as a guy you experience a bit of a sympathetic reaction to the image of a penis being pierced.

Vote shit sandwich or the shit sandwich gets it!
Help me out here. I'm trying to find a manga I've read the first couple chapters of a while back, but I can't for the love of me remember the title.

It's about a guy and a girl who bond over the fact that they have to hide the "real them" from society at large and keep up appearances. At school the girl's the perfect stereotypical cold and distant honor student and the guy's the gloomy quiet one, but at home she's actually warm and caring and takes care of her little brother while the guy is an outgoing dork who has several piercing in his ears and face.

I'm sure I've seen it mentioned here, so I think you might be able to help me out here :)
