Holy poo poo, they are/were paying $3000 (taking the Bell price) for 100MB? No loving wonder that my internet is as expensive as it is. So, can we expect then a reduction of prices? Not 20x, but something ... throw us a bone...

Yes, capacity based pricing was absolutely asinine, it was literally the number one cost for indies.

Rogers:
100Mbps: Was $1,122.00, down to $319.68
1Gbps: Was $11,220.00, down to $3,196.80

Bell:
100Mbps: Was $1,383.12, down to $149.08
1Gbps: Was $13,831.20, down to $1,490.80

You can see a list of total costs here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1LS69t55shCH8X7_LaNGQ0DkBIIdqXac0T3p1Uc5dBmM/edit#gid=4

It's interim pricing, there won't be too dramatic a drop until finalized, but its a huge win, and shows the CRTC is tired of their poo poo as well.

How are independents not massively losing money on every connection at that pricing? If Bell charges TSI $1,400 for 100Mbps, it seems like the 25Mbps connection I'm paying ~$50/mo for should instead cost around $350/mo. Are those prices per year instead of per month or something?

Good on the CRTC for finally doing their loving jobs.

My understanding is that they're paying for the peak capacity that they can spread out among customers, and are betting that their customers won't all at once use their connections to the fullest.

Similar to over-selling, except I remember Teksavvy was generally pretty good at keeping their network from becoming congested.

It's per month. They bill using 95th percentile (or burstable billing). So if their combined total for Bell customers was 10Gbps, they would have been paying $138,310/mo directly to Bell.

It's why Teksavvy (and most TPIA) has the free 2AM - 8AM download window, that bandwidth is literally costing them thousands and just collecting dust overnight. And as far as I know, the links are symmetric despite uploading not being important to MANY customers, so they give free upload.

Incorrect - it's a hard/fixed limit that is predetermined by the isp. Everyone wanted 95th usage billing, but Bell/etc wouldn't offer it.

Both me and 2 friends in calgary are getting "not authenticated" right now, only allowing sportsnet one.

sportsnet says it's a shaw problem, shaw says they don't control sportsnet and to just watch it on tv.

A couple years ago Shaw would call and offer me the same internet package, cable, and home phone (which I'd leave unplugged in the corner) for $5 less a month than I was paying for internet for six months. I'd keep it for six months then go back to straight internet. Within a couple weeks they'd call and offer the same deal. Ended up having cable on and off for almost two years like that.

About a year ago it switched to cable for an extra $20 so I haven't bothered since. Cable isn't really worth anything to be, but $5 off my internet service plus the backup option of cable wasn't bad I guess.

For the record, those documents are already publicly available, it's just that a) they're not even written in legalese, they're written in costingese so almost nobody outside the industry will willingly read or understand them, and b) the CRTC's website is notoriously difficult to actually find things on even when they aren't split into like ten different processes like this one is. So Teksavvy are doing a solid consolidating them like that.

Honestly right now there isn't even much to say on it, after the CRTC issued their October order that basically said "the studies you gave us are all bullshit, here are the interim rates we're setting until we can get you to do it again properly this time". The most relevant new thing is that the whole process is scheduled to take at least until next summer, between questions from CRTC staff for the incumbents, and opportunities for other people (mostly the third-party ISPs) to intervene in various ways.
