You have Romania and Bulgaria fighting on both sides and most of Central and Eastern Europe handing over their Jews and fielding SS divisions, and that's just the start. Senior members of the French police as late as the 60's were former collaborators. De-Nazification may or may not have worked, even Strauss was a Nazi. Even the fact that Greece and Italy both had civil wars against the communists in 1945-46 or that there was an insurgency against the Soviets in Poland and the Baltics complicates the tidy uncomplicated image of the war most people have.

My maternal grandmother was a Lithuanian Jew and holocaust survivor. My older brother got really into genealogy. He went through our dad's line first and discovered a whole bunch of cool history going all the way back to the 12 century England. Then he did our mom's side and and found out about Kanaus massacre killing pretty much how our entire bloodline sans my grandmother and her 1/2 brother died. They fled in the dead of night to Poland only to get captured and put in a concentration camp. That put the kabosh on any more genealogy from my brother.
