Old white lady who is supposed to hold up Constitutional rights calls a black guy ignorant for exercising his rights. That's bad, bad optics.

Given her job she probably should have chosen better phrasing. "I disagree with what he is doing but it is his Constitutional right to do so." Calling someone stupid and ignorant when there's a nonzero chance something related to this ends up in her lap is poor judgement (nailed it) on her part.

Did she use the word ignorant? I just saw stupid, dumb, and disrespectful.

also, "I disagree with what he is doing but it is his Constitutional right to do so" is the spirit of what she's saying, she just topped it with an old, white cherry.

Neither was much of western civilization. You have to view people within the context of their own times. Like, Woodrow Wilson would be considered a big 'ol racist by today's norms, but he fit right in with the times!

The country was awash in jim crow. That he brought it back to the federal bureaucracy (and the military!) is not particularly unique.

That era was also a popular time for all sorts of crazy racial theories and eugenics.

Yeah you're right, and Wilson in particular gets whitewashed in the history books. But you would be hard pressed to find many presidents from from that era, or earlier who didn't hold some kind of racist view that would be offensive by today's standards.

Mostly I was reacting to the comments about Ghandi. He was a human being, not a saint and it's shouldn't be shocking that a political figure a hundred years ago was racist.

Totally, I'm not trying to demonize Gandhi, just saying that we have an annoying habit of putting people on a pedestal ( like when Ginsburg went from a center left justice to NOTORIOUS RBG) and then getting crushed when our heroes are shown to be 3D flawed people like ourselves

Similarly, there were plenty of people defending Vick's dog fighting and Peterson's child abuse because that was just the way they were brought up and part of their normal lives...

The Notorious RBG is like 115 years old, of course she's not completely woke. Whether or not she supports Kaepernick's protest doesn't matter, that she respects his right to do it is the important part.

This is why I was initially shocked/surprised to hear this. RBG is usually the reasonable one who fights for issues on the left. Her disagreeing isn't what is shocking, it is the complete lack of empathy and understanding in her answer. Not once does she mention the issue of racial inequality. If you would have just given me audio and I heard, "If they want to be stupid and ignorant, that's their right", I would have never guessed that was RBG.
