One thing living in Japan does is cement the fact that ignoring the opinions of others is a perfectly valid life strategy.
This thread is like watching an AOL chatroom full of old men pretending to be teenage girls asking a/s/l for every new join.

That is how repetitive it is. At least find new ways to insult each other, you lazy assholes.

Something can be transphobic/homophobic without the person saying them actively hating or fearing either group. They can be hurtful statements intended as a joke that create an environment in which mocking those groups is considered acceptable. This makes all forms of discrimination against them more likely.

This isn't hard to understand but I'm sure you'll find a way to disappoint.

since you love definitions so much here is merriam websters:
irrational fear of, aversion to, or discrimination against transgender or transsexual people

notice how fear is only part of that, the other is discrimination, which is not "hate" and is oftentimes much more insidious than someone literally saying they hate lgbt people

I'd say discrimination is to hate. Or at least 'dislike' if one considers hate to be 'too strong a word'. I mean it said 'irrational' at the beginning of the entire definition.

But really, why should homo and trans be in a different category than arachno?

discrimination is treating someone different because of their identity(along with other behaviors) and you can certainly do that and still think you are an open minded person that doesn't hate anyone (but man wouldn't it be better if that group of people acted and looked more like me it'd just make everyone's lives so much easier)

I've seriously had people praise me for not being a butch lesbian because I'm more "normal" because I'm femme, as well as having people tell me that I don't "seem gay". do I think these people hate lesbians? no, probably not, but they were being homophobic and it hurt and made me feel like poo poo.

I think they hated the butch part. Butch is an attitude, not an orientation.

So no, I don't think that was homophobic, in the way you've described it.

Well you didn't go into that much detail either!

They didn't sound like they hated you. Just that you defied expectations of what they'd met before. I like Ellen Degeneres. I dislike Rosie O'Donnell. And it's about the attitude.

Flipping someone on what they thought before? I'd consider that a win. The fact that you came away from that feeling the opposite, sounds like you left major details about the story out, at the very least.

that's what I'm saying dumbass homophobia doesn't require hate, and it definitely didn't change their minds because I still get backhanded comments about it. and it's certainly not a good feeling having someone deny your identity because you don't fit a stereotype straight people have built up in their heads

I shouldn't have to tell a lgbt person this

Also maybe this comes as a surprise to some people but it's possible to not actively hate/fear something and still hold opinions that are harmful to that group.

Nice witches, gmc. I do really like the solar witch one, especially the soft colour palette. In fact I do like all of your witches, they have interesting character designs to, giving a different spin to concept of witches.

Well, as for posting more art, I haven't got much since I'm currently trying something new with the structure phase methodology, along with ineligible scribbles from my first gesture drawing session. I did continue working on this piece, but it's still not finished. This is what I've done so far.

Hello here is a quick list of things I have noticed in most of what you have posted so far
-You make their arms really long, especially their biceps
-you also make the arms get wider further away from the body and it gets kinda Popeye lookin, also the wrists don't taper in
-their eyes/eyebrows aren't really emoting at all
-They're lacking mass in distinct parts of their heads mostly the back of their skulls and the part of their jaw where there mouths are, like the mouths look like flat symbols when their existence doesn't add any 3d volume to the character's face

Tldr it looks like you've spent a lot of time honing that very clean very commercial friendly rendering style but not as much time practicing anatomy or expression, and are falling back on your knowledge of certain features as 2d images when you construct a figure

Wow that was a lot longer thN I meant it to be but it is a fairly simple problem a lot of artists have

Thanks for the advice. I was reluctant to post them at first, but now some people pointed out the problems I have, I know where to fix and how to rethink myself on improve further. So it's very helpful to be honest.

Also about the long arms, this is why I've wanted to go back and redo how I've made my basic structures, as I felt they were out of proportions and and a bit stiff at times. I think I did something wrong along the way.

Well, I better do that and do a expression character sheet for practice. I've gone a little rusty since I've spend more time on writing lately. Again, thanks for the tip.

If it helps with the arms there is a handy little proportional thing you can keep in mind. Your lower arm (elbow to wrist) is roughly 2/3s the length of your upper arm (shoulder to elbow) and your hand is roughly 2/3s the length of your lower arm (starting from the wrist). So each part is shorter as you go down the arm. Obviously a little measurement like that wont solve everything but at least keeping that in mind should make it easier to reign in the length a bit.

For facial structure study some skulls, those kinds of studies are hugely useful and it'll give you a lot more nuance with your forms if you understand whats going on underneath. You can even start a portrait with a skull, then build the person's face on top of that which can be a nice exercise if you like.

But at least it's a start. A good start mind you. I'm going to keep that in mind when I get back home to start refining my workflow.

Skulls... While understandably it's all part of the fundamentals of art and I definitely would take a good at them when I get back home, because my wireless internet is acting up at this time.

But still, I can't help but think of the late Frank Bender and his biopic when you mention that. In the book, he was talking about how no skulls were identical and each of the little things, such as the nasal cavity, can really alter the facial structure as a whole. Then he also describe in explicit details how he learn the muscle structure, the similarities in each facial construction... after years of working as a forensic artist. And I gotta admit, I wish I knew where I put that book somewhere in my house. I could definitely read it again at this point.

Wow, this is a really fantastic practice/reference piece, I think I'm going to try making a similar chart as practice myself - not only do you get to learn how to correctly portray lots of different surfaces, but it becomes a handy visual reference when you're working on other pieces and need to remember how to make a certain surface.

Yeah I was struck by how neat that chart was to. Though I'd have to figure out how to draw varied textures in the first place.
