i went to south africa recently and as americans everyone was nice to us as far as i could tell, but you can really tell that apartheid ended basically yesterday

infrastructure is super good compared to tanzania, the only other place i have been in africa. there are nice highways all across the country and many well developed cities and if you just stay in the cities and just look at the architecture, it feels like you could be in western europe. in tanzania (which, granted, has a much smaller population) only Dar es Salaam and Arusha would be recognizable as cities to an american, and the roads quickly turn to dirt once you leave town.

huge racial divides economically.

- there are both black and white people driving cars, but the only people walking by the side of the road or using the private busses are black people.

- you can't walk a block without someone asking for money, asking you to go into a store to buy formula for their child, etc - especially after dark. none of our leftovers from dinner made it back to the hotel because i would instantly find someone who wanted them

- a large number of the white people are huge racists and will make no attempt to hide this in a way that will absolutely blow your mind. we were driving back from the beach, our car was behind a truck with a bunch of white people in the bed who were entertaining themselves by throwing firecrackers at the black people walking on the side of the road. when i got back to the lodge where we were staying (this was a rural area) i noticed a sign at the dining hall saying "anyone throwing firecrackers will be removed from the lodge". that's right, throwing lit fireworks at black people on the side of the road is such a common thing that they have to have a policy and make a sign for it.

a DAC takes 1s and 0s and converts them into an analog sine wave they're super useful for a bunch of stuff including turning your bespoke flac collection into an actual audio signal. those cards posted above aren't DACs but rather audiophool bullshit devices designed to "clean" the power or whatever bullshit on your motherboard and do literally nothing of value.

stupid question time; but isn't that what an audio jack is doing already? what will a dac do that a normal computer audio output won't?

yes a normal computer audio jack will have a DAC in it. you could buy one with more precision or more power if you are a turbonerd. you will probably not actually get any better sound quality unless whoever designed your headphone jack was really cheaping out and put a really crappy DAC in it, though.

the sound card in your computer will have a DAC in it that sends the audio signal through a line level amplifier before sending it to the headphone/speaker jack.

people get special DACs because they think it makes a difference (for the past couple decades, maybe more, it makes zero difference. bargain basement DAC chips are already mathematically perfect). the real difference lies in the line level amp, which may be susceptible to interference which can produce audible noise in the signal, especially if your sound card is integrated into the motherboard

College Slice
Digital to Analog Converter.

The specifications are usually:
Dynamic Range: Maximum and minimum voltage it can do
Precision: Number of different values it can reach (the number of bits)
Linearity: How does the value map to a voltage? How close is it to being a linear increase
Rise Time: How fast can it change from 0->Max voltage, or between voltages? This is important for really high frequency stuff.
Output Impedance: How long of a wire/big of a speaker can you drive with the DAC (usually not good and why you need an amp)

You can get ones that have basically the theoretical maximum of all those for really cheap.

Other things:
Shininess: How nice is the brushed aluminum case that looks nice?
Price: Is it expensive? If not it is probably garbage
Marketing: How well marketed is it???

also the output coupling matters. in a cheap dac/amplifier like you see on a sound card, they dont care about poo poo like bias voltages and offset voltages hanging around, as they just stick a capacitor on the output and it blocks DC and passes the audio. THing is, they use lowest-bidder parts which means a small cap which means low frequency cutoff.

Really good DACs have insane low frequency response - I had a DC-coupled (meaning no capacitor on the output) DAC and the difference in low end was amazing. You could actually load up software to use those as straight up CV generators for old synths, i remember.

Yeah no one wants to deal with negative biasing so that your DAC output is zero-meaned which is why everyone does AC coupling, it is so easy.

But conversely, do you want to hear 6Hz sounds on your 25ohm impedance headphones? Well have fun with your 100mF cap

its funny because i had the same impression, much better speed in the bass ranges. i wouldve expected bettwer top (and i guess some of the overtones count) but better hifi usually means much more defined bass
