Okay okay okay, broadly saying checks were taking out was misleading, if anything it was combat checks that got reduced, and that kinda took me out of the battles a little bit. It seemed like the chance and creativity were sapped out a bit in favor of a more streamlined, matter-of-fact style of battle, which isn't really my scene. This is where I dig Pathfinder and White Wolf a little better, too.

Back in Dream Land, I have a question for you: Just how badly do you think John's going to take the realization of Insane Mode?

So by my rough math we'll be getting to Dreamland 3 sometime next year.

That is an absurd amount of levels. Also the game loves throwing blocks at you instead of stars which makes everything take twice as long unless you can consistently pull off combos. What sociopath designed this game :psyduck:

The reason so many Castlevania titles have the same JP name is because while they are very different games from each other, they all tell the same story. CV1, Vampire Killer, Haunted Castle, SCV4, and the X68000 game are all about Simon Belmont's first quest to kill Dracula. Super 4 was originally localized as a sequel to CV2, so in the US it was considered Simon's third adventure, but it's supposed to just be another remake of the original game. I always thought it was kind of cool because it gives this sense that Simon is the ultimate legendary vampire hunter so over the years people were telling stories and adding their own weird embellishments like merchants in the walls or Simon having blue hair.

That's a pretty neat interpretation, I like that idea a lot! And yeah, shortly after recording that episode, I looked up a bit more and realized that Super Castlevania IV was in fact a remake of Castlevania on the NES, so that does make sense (and frankly, makes the double-sequelly name of the SNES game completely ridiculous).

Oh jesus christ you guys are doing loving Battle Chip Challenge? Have you contemplated hardcore BDSM instead to satisfy your masochism? Unlike BCC the pain is instantaneous, the mechanics are engaging and you meet interesting people!

BN4 and BCC are the point where the BN series takes a nose-dive, it's when Capcom Sequel Effect kicked into high gear. The games are merched to poo poo. I'm talking e-reader cards, event only chips (admittedly not a new thing for the series but way worse during this time, continues to 5 and somewhat to 6) and massive emphasis on multiple versions. It's a shame you guys started this before BN4 because BN4 has codes for BCC hidden in the world. like so:
http://lparchive.org/Mega-Man-Battle-Network-4-6/Update%2001/41-capture_29092010_164557.png
They are all needlessly long as hell.

You can fast forward fights by pressing B once.

There is kind of a wall in the beginning of the game when you go from tournament 1 to tournament 2. So believe me, you're gonna loving feel those 30 opponents.

There is indeed a post-game. It's a 100 battle long tournament with a super boss at the end. Honestly, it's not even like hard. You will probably have a strategy down by that point so it's just a matter of wearing your opponents down. It's just tedium to the extreme.

This is not the worst game of the BN series because 1) I don't consider it a part of the BN series and 2) I don't consider it a game. I still wonder whether Xover or this had more gameplay. I actually lean towards Xover, despite having a visceral hatred of that game. BCC is a fee2play phone game released before its time for 40 bucks. It boggles me that Inticreates was a part of this since they also made ZX and that game is rock loving solid.

Yeeeeeeup, we're gonna slog through it. It's (in my opinion) the worst of the Battle Network timeline games, but at least we're pushing through it double-time to catch up to our planned schedule, so it'll be over before you know it.

4-6 forms a neat (if inferior) trilogy of Battle Network games, and while they don't stick in my head nearly as well as 1-3, I do kinda like the Dr. Regal arc, and how everything ties back into the original trilogy. Time will tell, though. Still deciding exactly how we're handling Battle Network 4 between its two versions and re-release.

We may attempt the 100-fight tournament for shits and giggles depending how fast we blast through the game, and I don't know that we'll be playing Rockman Xover since it's inaccessible at this point, but we'll see what we can do. And yes, the Zero and ZX series are phenomenal, and I'm desperately excited to start playing those.

Meanwhile, back in Dream Land, let's plot the next snake oil of the day so we can get John to buy more needless bullshit.

Related to your continued megaman-ish suffering

This is a Komusō Buddhist monk, their most notable trait was playing a bamboo flute to meditate and/or beg for alms. They were abolished by the Tokugawa shogunate but the practice was revived by modern Buddhists as a historical reenactment thing. I think the wicker basket hat was meant to impart some level of anonymity.

The music for his stage is a lovely 8 bit version of the SNES Tengu man stage music.

Regarding your Mega Let's Play, I have two pieces of advice to make the WonderSwan Megaman & Bass easier on yourselves (for Megaman at least, Bass gets better weapons and his double jump comes in handy, but it takes a lot more work to make him useful. But I'm assuming you guys are only doing one playthrough):

1. Grind up at least 300 bolts so you can buy the Super Armor from the shop (the item that looks like this: "( )") which cuts the damage you take in half (there's another item that does the same for special weapon usage which is also useful).

2. Beat Aircon Man (the boss right above Komuso Man on the Stage Select) as early as possible as literally every single boss in the game is weak to his weapon.

Hadn't put much thought into it, but if the game ends up being pretty short (and judging by what we've recorded so far, it's looking that way) we may consider doing Bass's storyline too.

Doing this as soon as possible. More armor would be a serious help (even though most stuff seems to barely hurt Mega Man).

The game is only 8 stages long (and that's counting the intro and final levels) but yeah, Megaman seems a bit more durable than Bass in general. Aircon Man's level is probably the worst one in the game but the reward is worth it. If you do end up doing Bass' story I'd also recommend getting the items that power up his shots and give him the ability to shoot through walls (unfortunatly though they both cost 300 bolts a piece).

Overall while it does get far more manageable once you get a few weapons and powerups under your belt this is not a particularly well designed game (the items are all stupidly expensive, the level design isn't great, weapon energy is only refilled on a Game Over rather than between stages like every other game, and there is some absolutely dickish enemy placement at times plus the fact that a lot of said enemies hit pretty hard without the armor upgrade).

So out of curiousity, do you guys basically go into a lot of the games you do blind (which seems to be the case during a lot of your Megaman playthroughs at least) or does it vary?

Also, since you did Mighty No. 9 a little while back are you planning on tackling other Megaman-like games such as Shovel Knight and/or the Azure Striker Gunvolt series at some point (Inafune did have some involvement in the development of the latter at least)?

We usually go in as blind as we can for most games. A lot of folks seem to like our raw reactions to unexpected stuff much more than series where we go in knowing a lot about what's going on, so we try to bottle it as best we can.

As far as Mega Man-like games, we've already done the main campaign for Shovel Knight a little over two years ago, though we always said we were going to come back for more. We'll likely continue it (though maybe not necessarily as part of the Mega Let's Play) -- as far as Azure Striker Gunvolt I & II and Mighty Gunvolt go, those are definitively part of the Mega Let's Play (since they're so tightly woven into Mighty No. 9 and Inti Creates). WAY down the line, but they're coming!
