I read an article today referring to Dallas as "the Big D." I mentioned this hilarious name to three different people and they all said "yeah everyone calls it that." I can't believe this.

But it isn't "the Big D," it's "Big D." Like "Big Tex."

And Denton is trying on "lil' d" as it's sobriquet.

I call it DFW or the Metroplex, because I traveled through DFW airport a lot as a kid. I don't know much about the area so Dallas and FW tend to run together for me anyway.

The metroplex is a good name, because you also have places like arlington, plano and irving as part of it, all of which are in the top 100 cities in the us for population. For comparison, Arlington has roughly the same population as Tampa, ~50th in the US. Arlington is still a suburb with an old school main street, Tampa has loving skyscrapers downtown. You don't realize how many people are crammed into the metroplex until you move somewhere else. (Still gently caress arlington forever for not having any public transit option when I lived there. How do you run a tourist economy without public transit, jesus.)

Say, do you know how to do the walk?
As far as I can tell, most people in Houston just say they live in Houston. I do know that when I went to the Valley near McAllen, I would call everything McAllen and people would say, "No, we're in Pharr, now" or "We are in Edinburgh".

It would always confuse the hell out of me because it would be something as little as crossing a railroad track and we would be in a whole other town.

Came here to post this. At least the local paper made it clear in the headline that they were in the wrong.

SAPD motorcycle cops violate city policy by wearing Donald Trump caps

I doubt they will face much punishment but it is reassuring that the chief isn't defending their actions.

As registration closed, Harris County's voter roster had grown by more than 6 percent since 2014, the steepest increase in 16 years. More than 323,890 new names have been added, bringing the county voter roll to more than 2.2 million.

Harris County is not alone. The Texas Secretary of State's office two weeks ago reported the addition of more than 1 million registered voters across the state.

"The growth is out of proportion of what we have traditionally encountered," said Doug Ray, the assistant county attorney overseeing voter registration.

Mi Familia Vota organizers say this election cycle, which has seen Hispanic people put at the center of some vicious debate, has inspired a boom in participation.

"I have seen something I have never seen," said Carlos Duarte, Texas director for Mi Familia Vota. "Which is, people approaching us with the clear intention to register. In the past, we would have to approach them and explain to them why this is important."

Nearly one-third of Texas state lawmakers, along with candidates for the state legislature, pastors, and other anti-LGBT activists are saying the Supreme Court's 2015 Obergefell decision does not give legally-married same-sex couples who are government employees the right to the spousal benefits their different-sex peers have, or even the right to live together.

50 Republican state lawmakers and others have signed an amicus brief making those assertions, along with others, including the claim that the Obergefell decision would compromise the state sovereignty of Texas if it were used to require the Lone Star State to spend any taxpayer funds, especially on spousal benefits for same-sex couples.

At The Texas Observer, John Wright explains the brief "was submitted Friday in a lawsuit brought by anti-LGBT activists against the city of Houston in response to then-Mayor Annise Parker’s decision to extend benefits to the same-sex spouses of city employees in 2013."

Wright notes the Texas Supreme Court had refused to hear the case, but "Jonathan Saenz, president of the anti-LGBT group Texas Values, and former Harris County GOP chair Jared Woodfill, have petitioned the nine-member court for a rehearing."

Also signing the brief is Rep. Cecil Bell, an anti-LGBT extremist.

The brief essentially argues that even the U.S. Supreme Court does not have the constitutional right to direct any state to treat same-sex couples the same way it treats different-sex couples.

It claims "nothing" in the Obergefell ruling "compelled the taxpayers of Texas to pay for a vast array of benefits for same-sex spouses."

Note that the signatories of the amicus brief have no qualms about the taxpayers of Texas paying for a "vast array of benefits" for different-sex spouses.

"Indeed, it would unnecessarily implicate constitutional issues of state sovereignty if Obergefell were misconstrued as imposing spending requirements on the state of Texas to fund expensive health care and other benefits without authorization by Texas law," they claim.

The lawmakers and others who signed the brief call on the justices "to diminish federal tyranny and reestablish Texas Sovereignty," by denying these same-sex couples spousal benefits.
