Didn't they also manage to link the van to him? I remember reading that it was a rental so it couldn't be traced to the owner. But they found enough numbers to identify it on the parts (it was like a serial on an axle tied to the VIN) then traced it to the rental shop, who gave all the deets they had. Which were then traced back to the right person.

Wouldn't renting be the worst possible way of getting a vehicle for a bombing? Like say witnesses saw a generic white panel van or something, there are going to be thousands and thousands of those things registered in nearby states. But if a rental guy sees that and thinks to himself, "hey, a guy rented one of our generic white panel vans 3 days ago and never returned it. I'll just bring up his credit card receipt and call the police". Jeez, reporting your own vehicle stolen days before using it for the bombing would be less incriminating than that.

I think the most important part is that it isn't your car that's blowing up.

It's also pretty likely that all your spare cars are on cinder blocks.

The dumbest thing he did though was not using a getaway car with a goddamn license plate. The second dumbest thing was carrying an illegal concealed weapon on the day of the bombing.

It never ends. If Ryan Payne is allowed to change his plea to Not Guilty they'll have to have a separate trial just for him, though if the others are found guilty I don't know WTF he hopes to accomplish. There is the Bunkerville trial in February. And then of course the appeals process. Before the appeals process is done, one of the guys who was let off or who got a short sentence will probably run afoul of the law again.

This reminds me of the attempted Times Square car bombing in 2010. The bomb in the SUV fizzled instead of detonating, so there was a whole treasure trove of information for investigators. A few examples:

* The VIN number was removed from most obvious spots, but the suspect missed the engine block. They were able to trace it to the last known owner, who sold the SUV for cash to the bomber.

* The seller of the SUV still had the record of her phone call with the suspect on her phone, letting them track down the pre-paid cell phone he used to arrange the purchase and see all the calls made with that phone (such as calls to and from his own goddamn phone number and a fireworks store). She also had an email from him with his legit email address, which she gave investigators.

* The bomber parked his own SUV 8 blocks away to use as a getaway car, but he accidentally left his keys in the bomb vehicle and had to return later with his spare key. The police recovered his whole keyring from the bomb vehicle, including his house key.

* The vehicle's path was tracked through toll booth cameras and street security cameras to identify exactly where the bomber entered Manhattan and see him leaving the vehicle.

There was a big art heist case like that in Sweden years ago -- they used a rented boat as the getaway vehicle and had used their own real information to rent it, so when the cops found the boat they immediately knew who to find

IIRC because I was 12 at the time, they found the engine block or axle like a mile away from the Oklahoma City site in someone's backyard and traced it using the serial number on it.

I think the idea was to blast the vehicle into such a mess that there was not enough to trace it. But then like you said all they need to do is look for a recent rental that never came back. I think the thought was that it would be harder to track if it wasn't positively directly identified by getting actual numbers. Not only was it not mangled enough but uh...well yeah you can still narrow it down to a few options at most by just looking at what vehicles failed to come home.

Generally speaking using a vehicle in a bombing in general is just stupid unless you can drive it away without getting suspicion.
