...and I'd like some feedback, please. I put them out over Facebook last week, and they were a lot more popular than I ever expected them to be. I know that I'm not a very good guitarist, but between someone actually leaking part of my third album and the way other local artists have been treating me lately, I feel like I might be onto something. Even if it's an incredibly small something. Would you guys mind having a listen to the first one and giving me your opinions? http://www.mediafire.com/?j7kj29gyib5yxd9 (28 tracks, front and back album covers included.)

Yes. Anyway, I took that seriously and checked out the average file size for an album, and I fall about 2 mb short of the average. Which is alright, considering that this is two albums in one and over 40 minutes' worth of music in total. I stream and post videos, but only to Facebook, so if you'd rather laugh at my actual face, you'd have to either add me as a friend or follow my record label's page there. Oh, as for more news, I reached over a thousand downloads recently which is nice, considering that I only started making music two months ago and I really only share my music to my 270 FB friends when I'm not posting here. I don't really know how good of a number that is as far as bands go, but it seems that I have a small following, even though people don't often comment and are likewise miserly when it comes to likes. Oh yeah! I recruited an old friend to play drums when I'm on guitar (and guitar when I'm on drums) and we streamed a performance this past weekend. I think we sound good together, and would love to get a couple more people involved so that we can reach that heavy, strange sound I'm looking for. Okay, rambling over. Thanks. e: I am on Facebook as Ho Choy Uktena, and my record label's page is Unofficial Unknown. I'd provide links, but I'm kinda busy and so I'll add them later. e2: Here's a link to that live performance I mentioned. https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=707108966121119&id=100004660668877 Impatient Skype JO fucked around with this message at 17:41 on Nov 28, 2016 |

Welp. I'm not trying to be a bother, I just thought I'd use a thread to get some feedback/followers on my project. That one guy helped out with the streaming/soundcloud suggestions, so I thought everything was fine. If you have any criticisms in regard to the way I post, let me know and I'll try to do better next time.

i'm listening to the soundcloud stuff now and it seems to be a bunch of short guitar riffs. which is neat i guess, but they don't really seem fully-formed at all, just a bunch of short ideas. if you're uploading these "samplers" as shortened versions of your songs because of soundcloud space restrictions, i'd honestly suggest you ditch the sampler thing and just upload what you feel are currently your best full songs. also, your future jam videos desperately need a better setup for recording audio. in the video with your friend it sounds like you're recording through the phone that's taking the video, and since it's next to the drummer there are lots of spots where your playing is completely drowned out by his. i'm giving these comments with good intention and i'm not trying to offend you, i'm just trying to be honest. sea of losers fucked around with this message at 05:57 on Jan 13, 2017 |

Oh, don't worry about offending me at all, I'm starved for criticism. Thank you for spending the time to listen to my music, I honestly appreciate it. The feedback, even more so. You're right, most of the 'songs' really are just short guitar riffs, they weren't shortened. They were basically me trying to write interesting enough riffs to stand on their own. Also because I didn't think to use drum tracks, haha. The 'sampler' thing was just my way of encouraging people to use my mediafire download links, so I could keep using it to track the amounts of download I was recieving. Mostly just to keep my ego charged by having a page full of (relatively) high numbers of downloads. I've since moved on to just posting videos to YouTube. As for the poor sound quality, you're totally right; I've been using my phone to record everything, and still do. Mostly because I haven't saved up enough for new equipment, but it's coming. Just gotta keep saving. But for now, here are my latest songs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_sD9_dfU7Y https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m8Yonh8ffHw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-hqfzi3sd3c https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6mjyDroPt2U Edit: Here are a couple more songs: https://www.instagram.com/p/BJ1MFsyhPTU2x8l6bAmkhqLhexCy0p7022qL580/ https://www.instagram.com/p/BJ1NRz0h3UWBrgHIFUugcG8mfgf5LRWNSzhA4g0/ And something silly: https://www.instagram.com/p/BB8CwvLI-ClvYNCgZesYDRYFIyldphIz1KbN080/ Impatient Skype JO fucked around with this message at 19:22 on Jan 16, 2017 |

yeah all of these are just like a singular riff played for like a minute straight so ummm your really gonna pass any of these off as actual songs? like yeah some of the riffs are cool but thats it. just a cool riff in the void. maybe instead of churning out a million albums or w/e you focus on trying to put together something fully formed like you have plenty of parts there but your just putting them out as singular "songs" for no real reason other than to fill out "albums" so you have some sort of catalog. for real brave you could work any one of these "albums" into a singular song and you would have one decent song instead of a bunch of oh thats nice little riffs sitting on their own.

Thanks for the feedback. Some of my songs have drum tracks on them and 'go somewhere', if that's what you mean. Check out the five YouTube videos I posted before the last two, for example. And until I learn/come up with some more scales and chords and get some better equipment, those little riffs will continue to make up the bulk of what I make. You did catch on to the fact that I'm going to use these recordings to produce longer, more thought out songs, so I think I'm on the right track. Actually, here's a link to an album that is 53 minutes of more thought out songs.

Even if your plan is to use these recordings to put out longer more thought out songs, I think fantasy zone's point is that putting 20 of these little clips out as an "album" is a bit disingenuous. I'm sorry if this sounds harsh, but why would anyone want to take the time to listen to an "album" of tracks that you couldn't take the time to actually finish? Even your link to the 53 minute album of more thought out songs is nothing more than the same guitar riff repeated with the same backing drum track for a few minutes. There is no movement in any of the songs, no intro, no chorus, no verse, no transitions. Like I can click any single point within the track and it sounds exactly the same. Again, I am sorry if this is harsh but I think it's something you need to hear. You have a million ideas but haven't seemed to finish a single one and that needs to be your focus going forward or you will never do more than pump out 3 minute long loops of the same riff. You say you think you are on the right track but personally, I think you need to shift your approach. Now this is purely subjective and this may not be in line with your end-goal but it seems like you are really interested in putting your music out there for people to listen to and you are going to need to invest a lot more time for that to happen.

Please don't worry about sounding overly harsh, you're telling me things nobody IRL is saying to me. Things that I really need to learn to hear if I'm going to improve. Thank you for helping me. And I agree with you points for the most point, with a few exceptions: I put these songs out as albums and whatever since to me, they're more like snapshots of my progress as a musician. I didn't intend to 'release' them originally, but I figured I might as well, since I'm a new guitarist and I should get all the criticism I can get. It's not that I couldn't take the time to finish them, it's more that I like the way they sound as-is, and don't know enough to figure out how to get them to progress, since I think I only know maybe one chord, several handshapes and three scales. It's been about seven months and I feel like I can't get anything else to stick as far as learning more chords, etc. goes. Is that normal? It's really frustrating. And finally, I think it's unfair to call the whole album of the 'more thought out' songs the same riff repeated. Actually listen to it, and don't skip around. All that said, I'll work harder to make better music. That's a promise. And please don't take any of this as just me trying to deflect criticism. I'm really excited to actually be discussing my music with someone who tells me something other than fake-rear end "Yeah, you're doing good"s or "that's you playing?"s.

It was a bit unfair to call the album the same riff throughout. I listened to the songs again and I think the point I was trying to make is that even though the riffs switch up, there is no change or too subtle of a change in rhythm, tempo, or sound design to help your ears recognize the riff change. I think your best bet would be to start learning how to structure a track in terms of intro, verse, chorus, verse, break, chorus, or whatever. Then you need to learn percussion rhythms that fit with your style that will work for each section. In between sections should be some type of fill or crash that helps bridge two percussion rhythms. In terms of your guitar playing, don't be afraid to leave some space for other elements or just for a break from the wall of sound. Try mixing lighter playing or muted playing to give it some more interesting dynamics. That should be enough to move you in the right direction.

Okay. I'll work on these things and post what I come up with. It may take a while since my amp broke right after I lost my job, but a friend let me borrow a bass and bass amp, so I'll try to get what you mentioned done with it. At least until I get a new amp. And/or whatever piece of equipment lets me record directly to the computer.

Yeah I agree with MrSargent. Don't bother buying amps at this stage. Get the free version of Amplitube which comes with like 3 good amp models and a bass amp, and a few pedals that are all of pro quality, and get an interface to record to your computer. If you have $ to spare spend as much as you can on the interface, anything by Focusrite will serve you well but get whatever you can afford. Most interfaces will come with a free version of some recording software or you can get a full-featured free trial of Reaper from reaper.fm . That will get you a decent recording quality setup for minimal outlay and effort (even if you get a nice amp you'll need to buy a mic (and learn to mic up your amp) and an interface anyway). Then get a copy of EZDrummer or Steven Slate Drums and learn to program some drum grooves around your riffs, or start working on matching a riff to a pre-made drum pattern. Then you're on your way to a full sound.
