If objective and map design are every going to be expanded, the heroes don't necessarily need drastic changes though. i.e. Widow = immobile while scoped, has poor peripheral vision and can't contest a point but if Blizz were to release a new map called Anubis 2 with 2x sniper nests accessible only by long range teleport/grappling hook with full view of the capture point, cover for LoSing/peeking and a health pack spawn then suddenly widow becomes broken tier on that map. It would never happen to this extent but you see how the map can be designed to play more to a certain hero's strengths and minimise its weaknesses.

One example in the game currently is Mei on Hanamura point A defence. You can camp that big wooden doorway and troll icewall teams in half whenever they try to push in.

Map design is the biggest culprit on why attack/defend and hybrid cap/escort are poo poo game modes.

You have one major choke and a lot of the flank routes don't really flank because they closely parallel the main choke.

you can kill most heroes in under 2 seconds with bastion's recon gun. you have 300 health, a third of which is armor, so in a straight up fight you can damage race most of the offensive heroes (reaper will still kill you unless he's trying to snipe but everyone else you can beat if you're in bastion's effective range) even though they do damage slightly faster to you than you do to them. he deals good damage (89/178 dps). this isn't lucio vs reaper damage output here, this is the difference of under a second where the other guy generally has 100 less health than you and no armor to speak of. anything that isn't a tank can be killed in your single clip; even reaper! the problem is not the damage you do, which is respectable if not great, the problem is that bastion has a tank's hitbox, no mobility whatsoever so you can only make use of your own effective range to defend yourself from people that chase you down, and you only have 20 shots to work with. if your aim is on point, you can mulch tracers and genjis that chase after you because they expect you to just roll over and die because you're a loving recon bastion

clearly the definition y'all have for surprisingly good is different from mine. I don't think we'd be having this argument if a better hero had that gun. tracer's gun would be trash in bastion's hands too

I like playing Mercy. A lot. It's really fun when your team realises that they stay alive longer when they are protecting the healer that sweeps from player to player.

Then there are the other kind of match where you desperatly chase after everyone that goes alone head first into the enemy team while spamming the °need healing° voice clip. And to top it off, they don't care for it when they get it. I had a match where I healed 40% of the damage and rezzed three teammates to capture the point and win the game. It was the PotG and felt quite cool doing it. Then everybody voted for Genji and Bastion.

This was where I was at for a long time, although I'm starting to get to the point where the hit I take in a comp loss while playing Mercy just isn't worth it

The most typical occurrence of this to me is when a Widowmaker drops down in front of me, and starts running, shooting her auto at me, for some reason my brain is frozen in novelty and I frequently die and then laugh.

It's really frustrating because I have two different impulses going on when I que up competitive:

1. PLAYING MERCY IS SO loving FUN and playing other supports is kind of boring for me.
2. I'm a competitive person and I can see very clearly that my team would have a better chance to win if I went Lucio even though I have like 1/10th the mastery of Lucio I do of Mercy.

I think it's just something I'm going to have to get used to though or quit the game. I never played a MOBA, I assume that when you are constantly adding new characters you just can't make such a massive cast all equally competitively viable. But just, it's really frustrating because I want to be playing Mercy.

Yeah she synergises with some heroes better than Lucio. She's good with Pharah and a 76 that uses his mobility to stay on highground. In my opinion play a bit of Lucio in quick play and get a feel for him. He's an extremely strong character and in my opinion very fun to play.

As long you aren't constantly dying to stuff, Mercy is just as good Lucio. She'a arguably better on like payload maps since she can just stay far from the fight and rez everyone when they inevitably get ulted

"I'll be whatever I wanna do!"
The group I've been playing with find having a mercy on the team is important for her rez ability. While on quick play I can sometimes get 3+ rez, on comp its usually 2+ as mercy gets singled out the easiest out of supports because the obvious beam connecting her to players. So while her rez is really useful, she tends to die first out of a group so its sometimes a moot point. I still prefer lucio as a support. Playing in a group of 6 is alot of fun, but since I play on head phones I find I miss out on audio cues since voice chat covers alot of the game sound, especially the subtle stuff like foot steps. Also I find I'm the most chill, as some of them lose their poo poo when they lose a comp match.

And speaking of support, for Ana I thought her zoomed in shots did more damage/heal like widow maker, but I guess it just changes her shots to hit scan rather then projectile?

She could, but it doesn't happen that way most of the time. What happens most times is 2-3 teammates die to just being picked without ultimates then you have to choose between continuing the teamfight down two or reviving them into the inevitable ults you won't have time to charge back revive in time for. And since you are in close range healing now, your chance of being caught in the ults yourself has gone way, way up. Or they all die one at a time and trickle back to the fight even as you spam, "Group Up! My Ultimate is ready!" over and over.

Mercy's a fine healer. If you're not playing tournaments you're fine doing what you want as long as it fits the sitch, and player skill is going to do more than a similar role that fits the meta.

It's just plain untrue. Mercy depends on team skill to be successful much more than Lucio, Ana, or Zen does. Choosing a different healer multiplies the impact of your own skill. If Mercy was on their level, she wouldn't be the least played healer in the top level tournaments, and in those tournaments she wouldn't rely on Pharah (another underrepresented character) being included as well to even have a chance to appear.

You have a point, but at the same time I feel like you are overestimating just how much your hero selection matters when you end up with the kind of teammates that couldn't hit water if they fell off a boat.

The fact that you are playing support at all is already helping your team more than which support you play as.
