The BIG one, though, that I'm not sure is mentioned in game, and is big enough for me to tag: "Widargelt" is a pseudonym of sorts. His true name is Theodred - nephew to Theodoric, the King of Ruin. He's the closest thing to an heir to the Ala Mhigan throne. He may not be aware of this fact, however, because he was raised as a monk since he was, like, a toddler. He was sent to live with the surviving monks when Theodoric was otherwise purging his own family.

I just find this particularly interesting because, despite the undoubted story influence this is going to have, Widargelt has simple sentence structure that drives me mad and would prevent me from ever expecting him to be royalty by any means. He is so stoic and lacking in emotion, stating only the absolutely most obvious in monotone fashion, that Erik would always chastise him and the player character as a result, proclaiming them to be simpletons. I don't think anyone else ever took it so seriously and we all understood that Erik was being a stereotypical arrogant scholar, but still, Widargelt never set off the aura of a patriarch. I think that it will be good to see him react to the news of his lineage, and I have always wondered if he was capable of more emotion Maybe now is our chance.

Do you think Erik knows and was trying to get Widargelt to break out of his shell? I mean, he seems too self-absorbed in his research to even notice or care about something like that, but maybe the whole time he was just trying to get a rise out of the monk and make him angry enough to actually do something about Ala Mhigo.

I doubt it, the level 50 MNK quest is Widergelt trying to kill you and absorb your power so that he can do something about Ala Mhigo, it's Erik that talks him down after the fight. IIRC Erik actually hits him.

Interesting bit about the XIIth Legion, though: This is not only a reference to FF12's Occupation theme, it's also a reference to Rome. The XIIth Legion (specifically Legio duodecima Fulminata) was the Roman Legion founded/commanded by Julius Caeser.

They're guilds, you get access to FC workshops where you can build workshops & expensive housing exterior appearance skins, and a garden outside where you can grow regular crops & crossbreed expensive things in some arcane ritual. You can also stable your chocobo at a stable at an FC house, though this is less important as you can do that at an apartment now. They're a nice big space that you can decorate with your FC, which is nice.

Mentorship isn't anywhere near as involved as you might think. You have the chance to get dumped into a newbie chat channel, but there's probably enough mentors on your server that you'll never get put in there. You get a variety (three - general mentor, PVP, and Gathering/Crafting) of status icons that you can set your ingame status to (which is nothing but an epeen thing, as far as I can tell), and access to a 'mentor roulette' which is basically every dungeon, hard and extreme mode primal, coil, normal alexander, with matchmaking focused on putting you with new players who otherwise might find it hard to get people. The roulette doesn't give much of a reward but I think there's a title or item reward for doing whatever the achievement level of mentor roulettes is (1k, I think).

FC are your guilds in this game. Their main advantage is to have a pool of players to run content with reliably, if DF isn't your thing. Also crafters to make you kick rear end gear. You also get perks like steep teleport discounts or increased XP gain. If housing is your thing they are just about the only way to get a room to customize, assuming the FC has a house.

Also they get to send airships out for goods and can do the higher tiers of Diadem but no one really does that anymore.

1) Social aspects. Each FC has its own chat channel, and it's a good way to get into linkshells (smaller private chat channels).

2) FC buffs. Can have two active at any given time. Everyone in the FC gets them automatically. XP bonus, lower gil cost of teleporting, etc.

3) Crafting! Some FCs are generous with crafting, like they'll just make gear if you ask for it. It's best to expect you'll need to get the mats yourself, but I know most crafters in the 3 goon guilds on Excalibur are cool with crafting lower level gear (up to 50) for free.

4) Assistance with groups or other content. Not as important while leveling, but it's nice to get a solid group once content starts getting more difficult.

5) Guild house. Also a social aspect, but often times you can get assistance with crafting there (or help the FC craft a larger project).

6) FC bank. Depends on the FC. Generally you can expect crafting crystals and glamour prisms.

I have. It's a shitshow in US - the requirements are more about time gating than expertise. Supposedly it works better in JP.

well regarding Widargelt and Eric:

This was planted pretty obviously even in the Monk Quest. Eric seems to be absurdly well informed, even if you know he was an Ala Mhigan, he was pretty clearly aware of everything that was happening and was fairly okay with it, even when he was playing a character; like he spent a lot of time trying to be a 'snobbish academic' but when you get to level 50 he's clearly far more emotionally invested in you and Widargelt. I'm expecting Eric to have been some kind of royal advisor or something, if that isn't obvious or hasn't been mentioned already. The fact he's completely missing from the 50+ quests is also interesting and makes me think he may have left for Ala Mhigo or something way before.

I can't speak for the Goon FC on Excal (or elsewhere) so don't take this as a knock on it but I've had tenures in many highly populated FCs and not a single one of them have actually run content for people when people ask. They were, however, extremely into the points that were being farmed up by everyone.

I'm sure some FC's are awesome, but I've yet to meet them and not really interested in trying anymore.

Linkshells with cool people are ideal, in my opinion.

That is unfortunate. It's usually best to put in the extra effort to create on Excalibur when starting this game. Excalibur is only open for character creation at odd hours of the night, or morning, but once the character is created there's no limitations on getting on the server. Being in the goon FCs is very helpful for being able to run post-50 content with mostly competent people.

My friend and I would've gone to Excal (and I'd have asked to bring him as my plus one to a goon FC) if we weren't impatient, we didn't really, really, really like our house, and if we gave a poo poo to play at all seriously. But if you do want to play at all seriously, even a bit, your best bet really is to try making a character on Excal. It saves real money on a server transfer.

We've been on Brynhildr for literally years and doing fine farting about, though.

I really wish they would put in an alliance system facilitating communication between FCs. Right now, we have 3 FCs with around 1300 or more total members. After Heavensward came out, PBC would often have 150 people online at once. Now during prime time, however, there are probably about 50-60 online at best. I'm sure DGKK and TPT are about the same. So that's over 150 online during prime time across the FCs with no way to facilitate proper communication.

Pay to move her as well. She can join a goon FC also.

Here is why you want to switch. A few days ago we had a newer goon trying to find help with extreme primals for wondrous tails. He had been in queue for a while and was too shy to ask. The moment he mentioned in FC chat what he was doing, I got a group together of 8 people in a matter of minutes and we just clowned a ton of content for him.

At any given time there are between 100-200 goons online and actively playing the game. We have three goon FCs that are at near capacity and are all extremely active.

Prior to my server transfer I was in a small FC on giglamesh. They were good people, but it was maybe a dozen or two people in total. As such it was hard for me to just get some basic content done. It took me a week to get past story mode garuda because of long rear end DPS queues and just in general bad pubbies. On excalibur I can get a full group together (even sometimes a full 24 people for silly things like book club LotA) in minutes.

It is 100% worth it to transfer.

Also all three goon FCs have specialist crafters of pretty much every type. It's possible to get absolutely anything crafted. I can make anyone anything sub 60 and I probably have most the mats on hand to make it. You can just ask in FC chat if someone can make you a set of level 40 dragoon gear and someone will poo poo it out with a few button presses in minutes. I mean, it might be pink, but it'll be HQ and free.

Also I can't speak for DGKK and PBC, but the TPT chest always has level 50 crafted weapons ready for all new level 50s along with glamor prisms and other such stuff.

So for activity, individually the goon FCs rank 33, 37, and 103 in the world. Combine the three and we're the second most active group in the entire world. If you look on excalibur alone, we're 1, 2, and 5.
