Ak Gara posted:What were the gas attendants doing wrong? Well, for one thing, most motorcycle gas holes lead right up to the brim of the tank (vs. having a pipe leading down to the tank like in a car), so if you don't consciously slow down near the end you'll splash gas everywhere. Also you need to stick the pump in and then slowly withdraw it as it fills up because if you just ram it in and let the auto-shutoff do its thing you'll leave it a good quarter empty.

Truckers can pump their own gas in Oregon, too, probably because no station wants the liability for when their meth-addled gas pumper fills a 200 gallon diesel tank with unleaded. I wish that law came with a provision requiring a minimum ratio of attendants to pumps, most stations just have one guy running around manning all the pumps and it takes way too loving long to just get some gas.

What's the point of those laws? I've only ever had "full service" twice in my life and it took about 3x as long to get filled up and go and I had to awkwardly interact with a weird teenager who hated life. Most stations around here are self serve, a few will have a full-service line, and a very very very rare few are full service only. Is it just a make-work sort of thing?

I'm surprised there isn't more push to return to it with smog, explosions, and such on the line. Its super crazy the average person is allowed to fill up with no more training than their drivers ed instructor spending 30 seconds to tell them not to smoke. Gasoline is a potent carcinogen, can explode, and is a VOC of high concern with serious effects on air quality and self serve is a testament to how idiot proof they've managed to make it over the years. I've mentioned it in one of these threads before and I'd love to hear if anyone has it sourced as right or wrong, but I've anecdotally heard one of the biggest contributors to de-smogging LA was modern vapor returning gas pumps.

Jonny 290 posted:or, Buell does this. As you can see, the "gas tank" is actually an airbox, and the chunky frame is hollow and filled with fuel. The swingarm is also hollow and serves as the engine oil reservoir. Also the exhaust exits directly onto the rear wheel, the rear springs are under the seat, and the front brake is inside-out. Recent-model BMW motorcycles are also somewhat infamous for having the fuel tank under the seat and essentially nothing (or a storage compartment) where the tank usually is.

Sagebrush posted:Buell does this. I owned a bike like this (Aprilia, not a BMW) and the "tank" was just large enough to fit my helmet and gloves inside. The fuel tank was also considerably larger under seat than the teardrop tanks usually allow (5gal?). It was a great commuter bike as a result. The main problem with them is that the way the Aprilia was built, if you overfilled the tank and the bike was on a center stand (as opposed to on the side stand), the fuel would overflow right through the center of the bike through drainage channels and wind up going down onto the hot engine. The solution to this was warning stickers.
