TWO of them, even. One by Sonic near the beginning (while reading Crack Ups - we're talking over him), and one by Robotnik at the end.

If you haven't seen a Mean Bean Machine TAS, you should check this out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jIjBwp1b6BE I don't know if the game uses the same seed for bean colors every time, but I think that every stage can probably be solved in under 10 bean-drops. It is kind of crazy.

I think the seeds are randomized, but each player in the 1p game gets the same beans in the same order. So this sort of thing requires absolute prescient knowlege of what those 10 beans will be, which you can't do in an RTA on hardware. 2p game gets more randomized I think because of the power-ups you can get. Also if you let your opponent get two red beans on you you're basically dead.

I haven't seen that before, but I'm guessing that the beans are in fact seeded, like Kurieg said both players get the same sequence of beans in 1P Mode. And so, we continue through Puzzle Mode with Dustin, and sadly make the transition over to myself taking the lead. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bW7zY08uVdI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1DNOjaoASAQ

Is anyone else having issues with YouTube currently? It's decided it just doesn't want to show me more than twelve items for lists of playlists, so I can't see farther than, for instance, the Oracle games in the Zelda LP. (Thread pertinent, I can't see the playlist of the current 8-bit Mean Bean LP.)

I'm gonna dig around, this is definitely gonna be a problem if there's a new limit (it's really gonna make the channel page a shitload messier if so...) In the meantime, sorry about the lack of updates in this thread -- was best man at my best friend's wedding at the end of the week, so I've been a bit preoccupied since Thursday. You know, as a kid, I only had a Megadrive up until I got an N64, and none of my close friends has Game Gears or Master Systems. With pre-internet information availability, there basically were only five-and-a-half Sonic games* as far as I knew... I think that did a lot to improve my opinion of the series. (*And Mean Bean Machine, but that doesn't count. Spinball does.)

Yeah, it's actually pretty impressive just how well the Genesis titles completely buried the rest of the franchise. Very few outside the big four every really saw much of the light of day, probably to the series' benefit. Back in Sonic Drift, well... I remember going to my cousin's house, which was across the street, every morning before we had to wait for the school bus, pop in Sonic 2, turn on his Genesis, and tried to see how far we could get. I also remember being suuuper excited when I saw a commercial for Sonic Spinball, then getting to play it a couple of years later and thinking to myself that I was glad I didn't waste the money buying it. I even remember having a lot of fun with the Mean Bean Machine. I think not actually owning a Genesis and being a SNES kid probably let me enjoy the games more.

I was an NES kid at first (my parents bought one for themselves when I was 2, and before I started going to school I was already messing around with it), and got a Genesis long before a SNES. Lots of great memories with really bizarre games, but some of those were definitely miles above the rest. I didn't play the Genesis version of Spinball, since I had the Game Gear version and had a very tolerate/hate relationship with it. Kinda glad my interaction with it was as limited as it was. Much better Sonic games on Genesis. Much better Sonic games on Game Gear. sigh... Prepared to throw myself on the sword for the mountain of cringey awkwardness this episode is about to bring you. None of this should have happened on mic, and frankly editing this episode was excruciating to hear back. But I'm a man of my word: The next episode will be the last for this game, and we will move on to much bigger and much better things on Monday. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y8vzKOfd7Z8

The local Perkins had Sonic Drift 2 as a "Game kids can play to keep them distracted while waiting for food" and I seem to remember that it was waaaay better than whatever this bullshit is. It seems that Eggman takes up the entire track sometimes and other times you can get by him.

Abso-loving-lutely. Sonic Drift 2 is actually following pretty quickly after this, and I played it a while back. It's by no means amazing, but it very literally leaves this one in the dust. For some reason, when the race starts, every single kart seems to take up the entire width of the track, and on turns it doesn't seem to handle collision detection even remotely accurately.

Apologies for the delays on the next real Sonic videos -- I've mentioned in a few places that the next game up is in fact Sonic 3, and while we have already recorded the whole series (and as of last night recorded the live intro), there's a special video that I wanted to put up first that is taking considerably longer than expected. It's a very personal project, one that has been a part of my life off and on for about 13 years, and I want to make sure we do it justice, and do it right. As such, we're going to be doubling up on Sonic 3 videos next week, and then returning to normal the week after that. The special video will lead it off on Monday afternoon, followed by the actual start to the Let's Play Monday evening. Hopefully you guys enjoy it, I try not to get neurotic with the details on this stuff, but this is a rare exception where it's important to get it is finely tuned as I can. In the meantime, here are the D-Pad + Chill videos that we had go up in the past couple days, and we'll have another two on their actual schedule this weekend, to be followed by the Let's Play. Enjoy! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=emMXnbLFgGo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c0tW0BQoCYY

So I've only just put the second of this weekend's D-Pad + Chill live (admittedly because I was fully distracted by putting together today's real Sonic video -- this one was totally ready to go yesterday afternoon, I just forgot to actually tell it when to go live ), but we're seeing ourselves confronted by a new problem with these. Thus far, every single one of the 12 episodes of Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog have been hit with a copyright claim. Totally understandable, makes perfect sense, I fill out the dispute form with the relevant info, cite United States Code, Title 17, Section 107, and usually within 24 hours the claim is dropped. But then I got a notice today that the claim on Episode 11: "Sonic's Song" was not dropped, and was in fact refused. A new character has joined this fight: a "Valleyarm In-house". A little snooping revealed they are a group/MCN that deals with publishing of all kinds, very amoebic, not super clear exactly how (or if) they're actually connected here. Strangely enough, Episode 12 was also flagged by Valleyarm, but that one did resolve. Gonna have to do a bit more digging and see if the dispute is worth appealing. On the one hand, I don't (and can't) live off what we make from YouTube monetization, so it's not like I'm going to starve if the video won't monetize, but at the same time the principle of the thing is important, and we may have a serious case in the name of fair use. I don't know. Gonna ponder this for a bit, but in the meantime please enjoy this weekend's episodes! A real video is finally coming tonight, and it should be a big one! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDfp1RvlPAU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BUKLgmJ19Xs

I've only gotten one copyright strike and it was from a Taiwanese gaming channel that was claiming ownership of completely unaltered footage of God of War 3. They dropped it after I contested it, probably because of my argument of "I can categorically prove you don't own this."
|
# ? Oct 17, 2016 19:25 |

Yeah, a handful of these also come from a channel called "Retro Gaming Shows", which I assume means someone else did more or less this same sort of thing, but they've never resisted the copyright dispute. If they did, it would be obscenely easy to appeal.

The gumball machine is the only bonus stage in vanilla sonic 3, the slot machine and electro orbs are from S&K, and you can only tell if it's gumball or one of the S&K ones, as both of them share the red/white sparkle effect.
