I doubt this will be a surprise to you, but the stat requirements for the first term tests on the second cycle are the same as the first. Did check a couple other things quick. The exams do check your stats at the end of the week like you thought. I gave myself a 14 on Science/Math and picked that activity to get over the B threshold and it did get me a B. Also, I decided to check if the devs were thinking outside the box a little and if the better memory quick changed the grade requirements(I mean, you've already seen these tests, right?). Unfortunately, bumping that up a level didn't change anything.

Probably going to be a bit before the next set of data. Have a bit more game to get through, a bit less time the next few days, and I'm planning on doing testing on how Stamina affects grades. I'll let you know when I've got more for you.

Stamina's effects on Grades were pretty simple, I thought.

If your physical stamina is low but not low enough to make you sick, your Sports grades drop by a grade. So B > C, C > D, A > B, etc. If your mental stamina is too low, then Lit, Science and Art take the penalty instead. If either of your stamina's are way too low, you'll get automatic F's. But if you're at that point, the game will force you to rest, even if you're in the middle of the week.

Yes, we wrote off Lit. I'm surprised it's working so well but it does force us to pass Science. We'll see how it holds.

In regards to the vote, Alice has beaten Naoko, 32- 4. I'm honestly surprised Naoko has picked up 2 votes since yesterday. It was 28-2 yesterday, I'm pretty sure.

We'll be doing Alice's route. Now I just need to find some time to record again...

Nearly up to the 3rd year, huh? It sure took a while.

Tuesday, December 19

: Hey there!

: Hey guys.

: Ready to make some New Year's cards?

: Heh, I sure am. Are you making cards too, Kiku?

When I was playing through this update, I thought I saw a lot of "Heh"'s. So I decided to count them when writing this update.

: Yes, I heard Rena mentioning that she was making some, so I figured I should make some as well.

: Heh, are you making as many as Rena is?

: Oh? How many are you making, Rena?

: I usually make about two hundred cards.

: Really? Who do you send them to?

: Anyone she's ever met for more than two minutes.

: Heh...

I don't think Rena usually goes "Heh" either...

: Wow, good luck...

: Heh, alright.

From now, I'll just drop the Heh counter at the end of the event. Gonna be a lot of interrupts if I point it out every time.

There's a little fade to black here.

: How many cards have you made so far, Rena?

: You still have a long way to go...

: Heh, I think I'll get most of them done over the weekend.

: I really love all of the traditions Japan has for the holidays... I've never heard of such an elaborate New Year's!

: Hmm, I'm not sure yet...

: In America, it's customary to have a kiss when midnight strikes! Do you think you'll get one?

: Heh, we'll see...

I don't think this is linked to affection but it's generally pretty hard to annoy Alice so...

: Heehee, you're silly, Alice...

: What are you guys doing for New Year's?

: I've always enjoyed spending it quietly at home.

: Yeah, me too.

: What about you, Kiku?

: Hmm?

: What are you doing for New Year's?

Ah, the city of lines lights.

: Paris! How romantic!

: That sounds like it'll be really nice.

: Eh, I guess...

: What do you mean? What could be nicer than being in Paris on New Years's?!

Few hours in an airport is a bit of a drag, yeah.

: Just once, I would like to spend a nice, quiet New Year's at home like everyone else.

: Heh, I'll take your place, then!

: Yeah, me too!

: Hehe...

Not counting this one since it's "Hehe" not "heh". But we're still up to 7.

Another little fade to black here.

: Oh, here...

Game: You hand Alice a few of your New Year's cards.

: Goon!

This is our good Art kicking. We got an A in the last test, so we'll be fine for a month or two before we start dropping below an A for these checks.

: Heh, you think so?

: I would display these on my wall.

: Wow, really?

: Absolutely!

: I'm so impressed!

: I'm glad you all like them...

: Hey, make sure one of those gets sent to me!

: Heehee, me too!

: I do not think I need to say anything.

: Heh, we'll see...

: No teasing, Goon!

: Fine, you'll all get one.

: Nice!

: Great, I will be looking for it!

Alright, there were 9 instances of HEH.

Wednesday, December 20

: Oh?

: Well, it paid off! You're impressive.

: Thanks, Hiroshi! I try.

Good thing he didn't bring up our Lit mark, huh?

Thursday, December 21

: Oh dear, I wonder... do you know what it is I like the best about you?

: What?

: Most guys are just so brash, only caring about themselves. But I think you really care about those around you. I hope you never lose that spark that make you who you are, Goon-kun.

The phone call from last update probably pushed us to the required amount of affection for this call. So now, they're about equal.

Of course, we're still going to try for Alice, but at this early cycle, we don't have as much control as I'd like.

Friday, December 21.

We've only had one day this week that wasn't an event. Busy, huh?

: I just got a low mark on my science test.

: Pfft, you think missing the extra credit question but getting everything else right is a low mark?

: I don't like not getting perfect scores...

: Yeah, rub it in, why don't you?

: How am I rubbing it in...?

: Hey, you two.

: ...Hi.

: Not so great.

: Yeah, we all know you're bad at your studies.

minion, please stop disrespecting me

...What the hell is wrong with Suzu's hand? Go on, zoom in. I'm not sure if she has 6 or 7 fingers, but I suspect she's pointing her middle finger at us.

Also, your school has 2928 students in it?

: ...

: That person only got a 21%.

: Maybe that was Lorde, Suzu.

: That is rather rude to rub in, if that's the case...

: Well, it probably wasn't... right? Well... maybe.

: No. And I even put a good answer, too!

: What did you put?

: Huh?

: I see...

: Why?

: I got that question right. I was just wondering what you said. It seems most people failed to get it right, since the teacher wrote on my paper how impressed he was that I actually got the answer.

She's only got four fingers and a thumb here. The case of the disappearing fingers?

: Er...

: What was the question again?

: Any my answer was right!

: Suzu, it wasn't meant that way. It was about the anthropic principle.

: The what...?

: Think about where we live, Suzu.

: Japan?

: No, Earth. On Earth we live by a star that supports our planet, but we aren't so close to be destroyed by it. We have food and water that keeps us alive. We exist because this planet allows for life to exist. We wouldnt' exist if it didn't.

: But that's...! No, that doesn't make sense.

: It makes plenty of sense.

: Excuse me?

Game: Suzu stoops down and picks up the paper on the floor.

: She only got a 21%... and that's counting the ten extra points from the extra credit... Wow.

And that's the 2nd semester of Year 2 done.

Monday, December 25

: Welcome, Lorde-san.

: C'mon c'mon! I wanna get this "Secret Santa" thing started.

Oh yeah, we bought Hiroshi a gift card.

: Be patient and eat some snacks.

: Fine.

: My apologies. I am glad you could make it, Lorde-san. Please make yourself at home.

: Thanks...

: Come on guys, let's exchange our gifts!

: I hope I don't get stuck with something lame!

: Aww Aya, secret gifts are the best kind! It doesn't matter what you receive.

Game: It's your turn to hand out your Secret Santa gift.

: Let's see what it is... One could say your fate depends on it...

: Well...?

: A gift card, eh?

: Not so fast, Aya.

: Huh?

: What?

So it was the best gift, huh?

: So I applaud you, Lorde-san. Thanks for the gift.

I can't really tell if that was backhanded comment or a genuine compliment from Hiroshi.

: Sure...

: It seems as though Goon-kun was not included in the Secret Santa calculations!

: Oh, I think Kasumi was supposed to get a gift for Lorde-san...

Neat little fact, you can sort of approximate your affection by how people refer to you. Kiku's Lorde-san is distant while Naoko calling us Goon-kun is a lot more affectionate. Alice also calls us Goon-kun while Hiroshi calls us Lorde-san.

: Kasumi? I haven't seen her around. She was invited though, wasn't she?

Bit of a bug here, but I think it's just visual. It worked fine.

: It's okay, I had fun seeing what everyone else got.

: Oh, I am glad. It was rather exciting to see what everyone got.

: Heh, no problem.

Our 10th "Heh"!

Scene shifts again.

: Heh, anything for you, Naoko. Later.

If there's any two characters I expect to go "heh", it's Goon and Hiroshi.

: Oh dear...

: Are you okay?

: Goon-kun?

: It seems that she isn't feeling well, so I've asked Hiroshi to drive her home.

: Hiroshi can drive?

: Heehee, I think he's just gotten his license. Kazuki?

: Didn't he just leave?

: He should be driving Kasumi home...

We head out now.

: Thanks, it was great.

: Yeah, and next year is going to be even better!

After this, we head back home.

: Who was your secret Santa and what did they give you?

: Kasumi was supposed to be my secret Santa, but she didn't give me anything.

: Oh, how rude! Good thing I got you a gift!

Sweet.

: Oh?

Free XP! I think this happens every Year 2. So yes, theoretically, you can reach infinite XP. It would just require infinite loops.

: Wow, thanks!

: Teehee, no problem! Enjoy it. Merry Christmas!

12 "Heh"s now.

And with that, the event ends. We got some science done and work out for a day.

Sunday, December 31

: Satsuko...? What are you doing here?

: All alone on New Year's, Goon?

: Well...

: You didn't get invited to any parties?

: I didn't hear about any...

: ...

: Er, sorry... didn't mean to make you feel bad...

: It's alright...

: So what are you doing to do? Sit here all night alone?

: I guess...

: What are you talking about?

I just noticed this today, while I was writing this up. It's active for all of 3 frames, but pay close attention to her eyes when they blink. Fairly well hidden hack, wouldn't have noticed it if I didn't have footage of this.

: You were going to sit here all night by yourself!

: Er, sorry...

: *sniff* It's okay...

: Are you okay...?

: I'm fine!

: I'm sorry if I really upset you...

: It's okay... I just wish people thought about my feelings sometimes...

: I see...

: So...

: So...?

: What?

: Yeah! You and me, Goon! We'll have a great time!

: What? You can't go out dressed like that!

: Too silly! I'm going to go change!

: Ah, much better!

: What's going on, Satsuko? Where are we going?

: We're going to have some fun on New Year's!

: What? Where?

: But-but... there's probably people there!

: What? Are you saying you're embarrassed of me?

: No, that's not it...

: Well, what is it, then?

: I don't know...

: Geez, you have to work on your "people skills!" Let's go!

Considering this conversation, I agree.

: But it's so cold out, Goon. It still gets cold around here even without any snow.

: At least it's not as cold as it would be.

: Well, what should we do now that we're here?

: I don't know, all the stores are closed for New Year's...

: What?!

: You didn't think of that?

: Well, no...

: *sigh*

: No, it was a good idea.

I can be mean to Aya quite often. It's much harder to be cruel to Satsuko.

: You're just saying that!

: No, really!

: *sniff* Really?

: Yeah, it was really a nice thought.

: Thanks...

: Sure.

: Well, what should we do?

: Good question...

: The park?

: Yes, they couldn't have closed that for New Year's!

: Okay...

Just gonna repeat that there's no Satsuko ending.

: Heh...

: Why don't we go out together more often, Goon?

: Hmm...

: Heh, I would like that.

: Really?

: Yeah, of course.

: Yay, that's so exciting!

: Heh, I guess we really have grown close...

: Aww, Goon! I'm so happy now!

: I'm glad.

I was going to make a fake newspaper article about "Vandals in Shira Oka Park!" but then I realised I didn't have a template lying around and the online one's looked eh. But at least we have the "Heh" counter!

: Alright.

Little fade to black and then we're back here.

: I think tonight has gone well...

: Too silly! Not tonight, how do you think things are going in general with life?

: Oh...

Not good. Satsuko is pretty at judging these sort of things. I'll need to see how much Science I can get and maybe take Alice out on another date.

: What? Why not?

: Well, you don't have many friends, and you're not doing that well in school...

: Well...

: If you really think things are okay, then you're not working hard enough. Don't settle for the easy way when things get hard! Don't think that tests shouldn't be studied for!

: I know I need to work harder...

Honestly, the fact that we have a chance in Loop 2 is astonishing enough. Shira Oka's early-game basically forces you to go through a loop or two before you get an ending AND that's only if you're savvy. I've heard of a guy who didn't get an ending until his 9th loop.

: Just keep yourself open to new things, okay? I think you'll be surprised at how much good it can do!

Our vital stats have gone up, notably for Intelligence. We'll be in a better spot next loop, especially with our new luck perk.

: Well, I'll start trying.

: Good! Nothing can ever get better if you don't try.

We head back home.

: No problem.

: Hmm...

: Huh...?

: It's midnight! Happy New Year!

Goon's parents are okay with him being out at midnight with an unknown girl...?

: Oh, Happy New Year!

: Here's to a clean slate and new beginnings!

: Yeah, I hope things go well this year.

: Just try your best and I'm sure they will!

: Yup, I'll do my best.

: Heehee...

: Huh...?

Game: Satsuko gives you a quick kiss.

Again?

: Heehee!

: What...? What was that for?

: It's a New Year's kiss!

: Heh, thanks...

: Aww, your face is all red!

: Is it?

: Heehee, it's cute!

: Oh... heh...

: I should get going. Thanks again for going out with me tonight, Goon!

: Sure, I'm glad you had a good time.

I kind of wanted to finish on a New Year.

3 Heh's from Goon + 2 optional ones.

So that brings us to (9 + 3 + 5) = 17 Heh's in one update.

So it's just the first event that's particularly weird since the Christmas party had Hiroshi and the third event was pretty long...

Oh well, it doesn't mean anything.

Gonna compare Alice and Naoko's affection vs. each other.
  • Alice - "Really falling for you..." "She also considers you her best friend."
  • Naoko - Romantic feelings are becoming stronger. Really values our friendship.

Provided I don't slip up, it looks like we're still on track to Alice's ending despite that call from Naoko. We just need to keep our grades up and keep talking to Alice.

Charlett
Apr 2, 2011
I was able, through some hard work and direct focus, to get Alice's ending on my first loop, aside from, you know, the first car death. She's really easy to get and if we really want to just finish up, I say we focus entirely on her and decide where to go from there.

Rhiodise
Feb 22, 2013
For what it's worth I didn't get an ending until Loop 4 or 5, and that's only because I cheated after failing an out of nowhere requirement of a particularly rude ending. I like this game, but I would not play through it the way it wants, I just don't have the patience.
... That might explain why I can't stand Satsuko since I've had loops where she, no joke, wasted about 4-6 days of training for meaningless scenes within two week periods :negative:

why is there no Satsuko ending

Everything about the game heavily suggests it's there as one of those secret routes these kinds of game so often have, but instead they just sort of allude to the existence of a route that doesn't exist?

Fresh new year, so many chances to err. Should be fun.

Quick warning, this update features some heavy stuff. For the sensitive, someone commits suicide in this update.

Tuesday, January 2

: Huh? New Year's already happened...

: Oh, well, Naoko called while you were asleep.

: Oh, are you coming too?

: I'd love to, but I can't be with you all the time! You need to go do well in social situations without me there.

Goon just wanted to share the delicious food with you, Satsuko. :smith:

: Alright, alright...

Fade to black and then we're here.

: Happy New Year's, Goon!

: Hey there, Goon-kun.

: Kazuki won't be joining us today. He's out with Suzu.

: Mmm, what smells so good?

: Mmm, delicious!

: Seven-herb soup?

: What's that?

: It's a special after New Year's soup meant to bring good health in the new year, dear.

: Ahh...

: What herbs would that be?

: Well, it varies from person to person, but usually there's radish and turnips and things like that...

I looked up some stuff on this. You can check out the ingredients there, if you want.

: I see...

: Why not tell us?

: A master never reveals her secrets!

: Teehee, a little mystery is nice!

Hmm, it smells really good...

Apparently, the standard herbs in seven-herb soup are these. Water dropwort, Shepherd's Purse, Cudweed, Chickweed, Nipplewort, Turnip and Radish. Never comes up in game but if you wanted to keep it a mystery, it's under these tags.

: Ugh, I could use some of that for my stomach...

: Here, everyone have some!

: Okay.

: Alright, here you go.

Game: Naoko ladles you a bowl of soup.

: Mmm!

: This is delicious!

: Hey, this is really good.

: Heehee, I'm glad you like it!

: It's very settling...

: Oh my, well, that's what it's supposed to be!

: I want some more!

: Hehe, alright. Here you go, Rena-chan.

Game: Rena happily slurps down a bowl of soup.

: Ahh, my stomach feels so settled!

: Speaking of soup...

: Oh?

: Was it eggplant soup? Or hawk soup? Or Mount Fuji soup?

"Mount Fuji soup"...?

: Hmm, well, at least it wasn't a bad dream...

: Oh, having a bad dream as my first dream of the year would have been horrible! I just wish I could figure out if this was more of a bad dream than a good dream...

: Doesn't sound like a good dream to me...

: Really?

: Why not?

: Well, soup is really hot... maybe she was getting cooked.

: Oh!

: Did you feel like that was happening, Rena?

: I don't know... I felt like I was getting warm... but I woke up before I got too hot...

: Oh, no, it was a bad dream!

This is the bad outcome, much like that event from last year where we talked about dreams. There's a bad, neutral and good outcome for these and I suspect they're linked to grades. I don't remember getting bad outcomes on my first Loop 2.

: Oh dear, it's okay, Rena-chan...

: This is really bad...

Feels like Satsuko's said this exact same thing to us.

: I hope so...

: Sorry...

Could be linked to quirks as well. Bad > Neutral > Good would fit in with the 3 tiers of quirks. We might see this change if we get some random quirk. Who knows?

Game: There's a knock on the door.

: Come in!

Hope he hasn't had a good dream this time around.

: Oh, hello Hiroshi.

: What are we all talking about?

: Our New Year's dreams.

: Oh, fantastic! Guess what my first New Year's dream was?

: Hmm?

: Me? Why me?

: RENA!

: Heehee, that's cute, Hiroshi-chan...

: Rena, that was SO not cool...

: Did I do something wrong?

: *sigh* Just forget it...

: Hey Goon, what was your New Year's dream?

Not sure if this changes, I can't remember.

...Huh, my finished run of this game was like 6 months ago now. That's a lot of stuff probably forgotten.

: Aww...

: Hmm, I guess that doesn't really mean much...

: Haha, what a lame dream!

: Oh my, at least you didn't have a bad dream like Hiroshi!

: Naoko!

I dunno, that sounds like a pretty good dream.

: Aww! Sorry, Hiroshi-chan!

: Sorry! It slipped...

: Heh, I guess it's better than eating too much umeboshi...

: I don't think so. He woke up in a cold sweat.

: RENA!

The game really needs someone to laugh at, huh?

We're still working on stats. I believe we've got about 2 months to the next exam.

Sunday, January 7

: I...

: You're real weird, you know that?

: I am not trying to be...

: What's going on?

: But talking to her is like talking to a brick wall.

: ...

: Don't pick on Yui.

: I'm not picking on her!

: ...A...ah...

: You're scaring her.

: You are raising your voice...

It's a little hard to capture the screen shake effect in motion. Might make a gif someday but that'd be a pretty big gif...

: Eek!

: Me...?

: Yeah, you. Who else did you think I meant?

Hey, we figured out that 1 + 1 probably equals 2. Needs more testing to be sure.

: ...Teehee.

: ...Well? I did ask you a question.

: I just... went to the park. And read in the library... occasionally.

: I see... Didn't you go out of town? Hit the beach?

: Uh...

: I...

: I spent most of mine just playing some sports with my friends. Too bad we don't have a sports festival at our school. Though I hear they're going to be having a sports festival NEXT year. Figures, after I'm gone.

: Sports festival...?

: ...

: Good luck with that.

: I know, right? She's such a little pighead sometimes. You can't get anything to sink in!

: She is a bit... confrontational.

: Yeah, that too. See, even she knows how Aya is, and she's not even friends with her.

: I think an outside look can make things... clearer.

Wish we could tell Aya this. It'd be great.

: ...

: I can't wait to get back into school at this rate. Maybe the classes will clear her head.

: Yes... I enjoy the studies. A good distraction.

: Yeah, something like that.

Yui really brings out the worst in a lot of people, huh? Poor girl.

Monday, January 8

: What's wrong, guys...?

: Goon-kun, you didn't hear...?

: Hear what?

: Oh my...

: What?!

: Oh my... her poor parents, her poor parents...

: How did it happen?

: We don't know... Here, take a look at this...

Game: Alice hands you a newspaper.

: They haven't given any details... Also...

: You know, the ones shaped like wings that were always on the back of her uniform... In fact, she carried those pins with her all the time. I bumped into Kasumi in the street once and they fell out of her pocket. She told me then that she never goes anywhere without them.

: They must have been very precious to her. If only we could have known how sad she was...

: Come on, Naoko... even when we tried to reach out to her, she pushed us away.

Man this game is so inconsistent. Hiroshi's a dick to Yui, Kasumi's suicide and so on.

I guess they'll explain it in their routes but from the outside it looks like we're just spending our high school years with bad people.

So fun story, by complete random chance I ended up choosing my character's birthday exactly on the day where you get told that this happened. So when I finally got to this point on a run I was sure wasn't going anywhere, getting constantly told my character was garbage by everyone as this game will do when your stats are terrible, I decided to try to have a day off on the character's birthday to see if anything special happened. The game of course said there was an event already there so I wasn't allowed and then it ended up being that. That was also the run that I did manage to get an ending condition on, barely, and screwed up at the last possible moment in the path over something that came out of nowhere.

... I cheated after that and I maintain that it was the proper course of action :v:

: Well, a student at my school died...

: Yes, how did you know?

: I read about it in the paper. Everyone must be so devastated...

: Yeah...

: Well...

: Come on, it's important to let out all of your emotions when something really traumatic happened.

: Alright.

: Ahh, there's nothing like fresh mountain air!

: I guess...

: What's wrong?

: I told you, Kasumi passed away.

: Everyone must be so upset...

: Yeah, everyone seems really shocked.

: Of course they are. It must be devastating to lose a classmate.

: You mean there's nothing I can do?

: Well... You never know. I have a lot of faith in you, Goon. You've accomplished so much already...

: I see...

Our current Goon can't stop Kasumi. I'm just going to say this flat out.

You can't do her ending until you've done every other ending first. Kasumi's ending is the final ending.

So if you were hoping to see Kasumi's ending, it's going to be pretty long until we can see it.

: I hope this talk helped you a little bit. How about we go to the hot springs? I have a few more things I want to talk to you about.

Game: You and Satsuko travel to the bath house to unwind a bit. After a bath, you two meet up to talk further.

That looks like a good sign.

: What is it?

: She's very sure of herself, isn't she?

: I won't.

: Good. It doesn't help if you can't even get along with her. Don't be put off!

: I can try, heh.

...She is?

: She can be, yeah.

: Just be sure to never give up on things you start, and keep things under control yourself.

: Okay. I'll remember that, Satsuko.

Well, here's an easy list of all the endings except for Kasumi. I don't recall this chat being the most helpful, but it's something. I mean, you can just call up Satsuko on a normal day and ask about that person for advice and it'll be more helpful.

We ask about Alice.

: Oh, that one's easy.

Bleh. Gonna have to risk being late to a date and having to deal with our awful Fashion.

: She really likes Karaoke World. That's all I can tell you for now. Be sure to keep what I've told you in mind.

It's a good sign at the very least.

We call up Alice after that chat.

Been meaning to chat for a while, just was waiting for the school year to start again.

: Hey Alice! How's it going?

: Oh, hey! Just lounging around. I've been so lazy today!

Same. I had some stuff I needed to do but I also wanted to do an update...

: Heh, it's good to do that sometimes.

: I know, I know. I just hope I can get myself motivated again.

: Hahaha, you've got that right. I hope one of these days she learns responsibility.

: Ah well, some people are just like that...

: Haha, that's true...

: Have you talked to your parents lately?

: Yup! They just sent me some books and magazines from America.

: Oh, that's cool.

: That's good. Then you won't feel like a stranger when you go back.

: Well, it's still my home, so I wouldn't feel much like a stranger...

: That's true...

: Heehee, it's also nice to keep up with Hollywood, too!

: Are you really into celebrities?

: Hmm, not really. I love movies, though!

Speaking of movies, we haven't been to the cinema yet.

: Yeah, movies are great. Nothing like a good, twisty plot.

: Nothing like a good adventure...

Hmm, the cinema does do romance movies...

: Um...sure...

: Ahh, now I'm in the mood for a good movie! I wonder if the rental store is open.

: I think it is.

: Great, I'm going to go rent one now!

: Okay, later!

Renting...videos?

This game really is set in the 90's.

Valentine's day is coming up, huh?

We organise a date with Alice on the 10th of Feb at the Cinema. We'll see if she really likes romance movies or that's just a random comment the developers didn't follow up on.

Monday, February 5

: Hi, Alice!

: Guess what.

Oh, this is definitely a good sign.

: Oh yeah, so it is.

: I'm so excited about it this year!

: Really? Why?

: I'm getting someone special a super-nice present.

: Really...? Who?

: I can't tell you that!

: Why, is it for me?

: Oh... I see.

: But if it's not for you, then... Well, you just might blab around to who it IS for, you see?

: Oh, I wouldn't do that...

: Aww, boo.

: So are you looking forward to it? Think you're going to get any big presents?

: I dunno... maybe one.

: Oh... from who?

: Well, I don't know that...

: I see...

: So what's it like in America, then?

: You really want to know that?

: Yeah, I do. Tell me about it.

: Oh, wow! I'd be glad to.

: Great.

: Okay, well. In America, on Valentine's Day, you give presents to people you love. Boys and girl both do.

oh right, we don't need to do anything for valentines

: I see... yeah, that's already different from here.

: And you don't get presents for any guy except your boyfriend or husband unless they're a close friend and you want to.

: Oh, I see.

White Day is exactly a month from Valentine's Day.

: That's pretty interesting how different it is.

: Yes, especially considering Valentine's Day is a western tradition originally.

: Yeah, it's interesting to see how it changed.

: Really? Neat?

: Yeah! That way, when White Day comes along, I don't have to worry.

: Oh, no!

Hmm, I thought we needed to spend more time with Alice after Satsuko told us things weren't going well on New Year's but now I'm concerned Goon's going to be late and mess things up...

Oh well.

SICK LOOT!
It has only clicked for me here, now, with that event with Satsuko, that there is actually a route where you get into a romantic relationship with Hiroshi.

I mean, I don't mind! Hiroshi's funny. He's also significantly more rad than noted shithead Aya. But wow, you can date Hiroshi.

Yes, Hiroshi and Kazuki are both legitimate options. Kazuki is actually one of my favourite routes.

I mentioned it more so because a game with both male and female routes is a little rare. Usually you get one or the other, not both. Or at least, that's the impression I got from most VN/Dating Sims.

We had something to do, didn't we...?

Oh, right, a date.

Maybe if I wasn't so lazy, I would have made it on time...

Definitely linked to a perk.

: Hello there!

: *gasp* I'm sorry, Alice!

: It doesn't matter...

Well, we're off to a good start.

: How about a love story?

I just wanted to show off the inside of the building.

Game: You enter Cinema Shira Oka with Alice. You take a moment to find your seats, and spend some time talking before the movie starts. The lights fade and the move begins. You watch Gigantic.

"Gigantic", eh?

Game: The main character is a young nobleman who is saved by one of the girls on the staff. Afterwards, you leave the theater.

: It was such a tragic story.

: But it was such a wondrous idea! Taking a trip to somewhere special with someone you love dearly.

: Yeah, seems like a wonderful way to go.

I forgot how to use the keyboard controls in this update. Whoops.

: It doesn't matter where, it matters who you take with you.

: I don't get it...

: It doesn't really matter where you go if you go with someone you love.

: Oh! I see. That's rather romantic.

: Is it?

: Yes...

We got here late and looking like a mess but the date still worked out fine. Good job, Goon.

Monday, February 12

: Goon-chan... is that DIRT under your fingernails?

Goon-chan?

: Uh...

: That's not healthy, you know.

: Okay...

We're going to be seeing that a lot. I thought we'd seen this but no, I've just seen this like 10 times.

Wednesday, February 14

: Hey, Alice! Happy Valentine's to you, too.

: You gotten a lot of candy?

: A fair amount, yeah. Just a bunch of obligation chocolates.

We didn't get anything at all last year so this is an improvement.

: Ah...well, I got something for you.

: Oh?

: Happy Valentine's Day!

: Wow, thanks, Alice...

: No problem!

: Huh?

: Haha. I'm just kidding. I'm not selfish. You don't have to.

: But I probably should.

: Well, it'd be nice.

: Thanks so much for this, Alice, you don't have to.

: ...Really?

We got a Valentine's day gift, looks like we'll be fine from here. :toot:

The rest of the week goes poorly, but sometimes that happens. No progress on the whole working out thing.

Then we immediately get this week of Science. Okay, game.

We hit 60 Sports and get another point of XP. Pretty neat, but I don't think we're going to hit 100 in either Art or Sport this run.

We have enough XP to get a point of Intelligence. We might actually be able to spare enough XP to pick up a perk. I'd guess that we're good enough to barely get by now. Bit hard to judge since we've completely abandoned Lit.

Sunday, March 4

: What?

: It's that time of year again!

: What time?

: Again? Honestly, Goon. It's almost White Day!

: Oh yeah, White Day.

For some reason, the game can't tell we didn't get a Valentine's present last year.

: Sure is.

: So who's the lucky girl this year?

No, you can't get multiple Valentine's Day presents. Only one from the girl from the girl who has the most affection for you. I'm pretty sure you can't get one from Hiroshi and Kazuki.

There's a brief fade to black before we're back here.

: I suppose I should get a job.

: Bingo!

: Maybe something not too cheap, but not expensive, either.

: That sounds really reasonable. Just remember to work hard or else!

: Or else what?

: Did you forget? If you don't, you'll be unable to afford the gift...

: Oh... right.

You can still work with things if you don't manage to get the good outcome for this event. Well, for some people.

: Ouch.

: But I know you'll do it! Or else!

Well, we now have a new activity. It's available up to White Day itself. As for the activity itself?

We're just delivering tofu.

And falling flat on our face.

Better.

And we're done. The activity is up for like 10 days so it doesn't take much to succeed. If you're getting an expensive thing, it'll take longer, cheaper things take less time.

Because of how short this event is, you can get screwed over by events and you don't really have too much time to rest. But I knew this was coming and rested before.

Wednesday, March 14

: Sure is. You excited?

: Sure am!

: I wonder why...

: You're so silly...

: No, I think you are...

: I got you these fancy chocolates.

: Candy, huh?

: Yeah- why?

: I love chocolates! These ones are really expensive, though.

: Not your problem. Just enjoy them.

: Alright. I'm going to love these, I just know it.

: Go ahead and have some now if you want.

There's another fade to black and then we're back here. We also grabbed a point of XP during that conversation.

: Oh, hi, Kiku.

: Thank you for getting Alice a present.

: Why would I not? I like her a lot.

: It was really nice. They do not have White Day where she is from and she really looks forward to it.

: Glad I made her day, then.

Praise from Kiku? We're really far beyond where we're meant to be on a 2nd loop.

We still have tests on. If you have to get a White Day gift, this can be a hectic period of the year. There are some other fairly long events, ones with progress bars that also appear at this point in 3rd year. We didn't see them this time around so that's good.

We probably can't hit 100 Art this loop but maybe we'll get someone to notice our art skills.

Here we go.

Here's our third F.

What?

I'll drop our grades and the change over this loop. We may have just barely gotten that C.

Wednesday, March 28

Why is it always Wednesdays? Can't we get events on a Thursday for a change?

Oi, you congratulated us last semester for good PE marks. Get out of here. Someday, someone will notice our Art...

Friday, March 30

: No!

: Yui, come on... don't be mean!

: Please just leave me be...

: What's going on here?

: Ah, I...

Rena really is related to Hiroshi, huh?

: It's... I...

Game: She starts backing away, only to run into you.

Hmm, that's a fairly extreme screencap of the screen shaking...

: I am so sorry... so sorry...

: Yui, you should be careful to look where you're going. At least you apologised, though!

: ...

: I only now found out about it... I wanted to apologise for this.

: None is needed!

: But now he's gone, if that's a relief to you! He's out right now at a graduation party with his friends... all his older friends, anyway.

Aya's not cool enough for that party, Kazuki's too cool to hang out with losers like Hiroshi.

: Well, now that that's settled.

: Yep! We should all go celebrate! Perhaps with ice cream?

: I...I do not know if I should.

: Everyone loves ice cream, silly. Of course you should.

: I do not feel right lately, Rena. I...

: What...?

: Ah well.

: There's always more opportunities to speak to her, I guess.

: Yeah... Especially since school is going on break shortly.

No wonder why Yui runs away...

Oh, right. End of semester. Actually, it's the end of the second year altogther.

We've done fine. Especially since we got that C in Science. Here's the data I promised earlier.

I thought we'd be getting a D in Science, 3 points above the cut off for a D, we'd fall about 3 points short of an A in Art and that'd we'd get that B in sports pretty comfortable. The grade requirements might not be so linear. I'm going to enjoy looking through 10 loops of data, just so I can figure this out.

Luke what are you doing, stop that
You probably mentioned it back at the beginning, but I can't keep it straight -- the bars to indicate physical and mental stamina, does a full bar mean full HP or full stress?

Similarly, I think you said the like, grades stats (Lit, Science, etc) reset on a new loop but the XP perks stay between loops, is that right? I agree that being super late and smelly is a real drag, just getting up to neutral hygiene and promptness would be pretty nice.

From what I remember of meeting the devs, there was one guy who was a programmer and taking care of the financial end. Most or all the rest were volunteers who were just happy to get the project off the ground. I'm guessing with the game being a flop, the main guy decided he had to make money somewhere else and the team fell apart.

A full (green) bar of stamina means that we have full stamina, not stress. Full stress would be when the bar is empty.

Our six stats displayed up the top reset on a new loop, but our Perks and our Vital Statistics (Intelligence, Fitness, Charm, Creativity) don't.

The game will have a different end date depending on the ending but each ending usually finishes around Year 3 Semester 2, if I'm remembering right. We never get to a 4th year in any loop.

Also, it's kind of sad to hear about the team falling apart. I mean, I knew it happened since they haven't done anything since, but it's nice to confirm it.

As far as I'm aware high schools in Japan don't HAVE a fourth year, so that was never in the cards to be part of the game. Unlike the US, middle school and high school years in Japan are split 3/3 rather than 2/4.

They don't have a fourth year of schooling but the third semester of the year takes place in Feb/March. So what I meant was that we don't get to Sem 3 Year 3.

It's a bit later than I intended, but I finally have the grade requirements for the second term exams for the freshman year. I still couldn't get an F with maxed stamina. 0-12 got a D, 13-24 got a C, then it went back to 10 point increments. 25-34 was a B, 35-44 was an A, and 45+ got an A+.

Well, here we are, only failing Lit, Fashion and Popularity. But who's around to judge us on the last two?

We get a bit of work done then we decide to chat with Alice.

"Goon-chan"...?

: Oh, hey! What's up?

: Not too much. What are you up to?

: Oh, just organising some things for student council.

: New events?

: Just getting ideas down.

: Hiroshi's in student council right?

: Ugh, yes...

: "Ugh"?

: He always loves to get his way...

: That's Hiroshi alright...

: There's not much you can do about that...

: Well, there should be!

: The best you can do is probably compromise...

: I just have to show him that I won't back down just because he's older than I am...

: That's a good idea. Stand your ground!

: Well, teachers love him, so he tends to get his way...

: Try to turn the student council members in your favor as much as possible.

: Good idea! That way I can override Hiroshi!

: Exactly.

: Oh well, I guess I'll just have to keep trying.

: Sure. I mean, he's only human, right?

: *chuckle*

: Well, I'm going to go think up some more ideas.

: Okay, good luck!

I'm surprised they don't just remove this conversation from the pool you can have with Alice at this point. I mean, Hiroshi's graduated. He's not in student council any more.

Caught it this time! I thought some small talk could give you stat boosts. Didn't realise you could get more Science from Alice though.

Well, back to working out/studying science/doing art.

Sunday, April 15

: Today's so exciting!

: Hey.

: Heehee, it's true, though. But there's no more school either.

: What? There is so... the term is just beginning! School isn't about over. Silly Aya!

: That isn't what she meant, Suzu. This is the last year of high school.

: Hey, girls. What's up?

: Nothing much. Just talking to bubble head here.

: Do you mean me?

: Don't be mean, Aya.

: What about?

: The term's starting.

Goon is sitting around 70 Sports so he'll do decently.

...Wow, dumping Lit, Fashion and Popularity did a lot for the rest of our stats.

: Why haven't we had any of those before, anyway?

: Something about not having anyone to compete against, seeing as we're not around other schools. But we're going to just divide up the classes in half and do a private on this year.

That's how my school did it. Mind you, we were a 7 - 12 and we had like 1000 people. We're in a JP style high school so that's a 10 - 12, I believe.

: Ah that makes sense... Anyway, we're going to be graduated so soon.

: I'm not! I still have a year left!

Wait, Suzu's in the year below us? I thought she moved into our year, but whatever.

: How can you be happy about still having a year left? I mean, I wish I could have been out of school years ago!

: Whatever.

Was this what you wanted, thread?

: I actually don't think I'll finish on time...

It'll never be more relevant than this loop. We've got 3 F's already.

: That is true...

: Yeah, sometimes I get better scores than you! That's always a plus, right?

: Aya! That's very rude.

: Fine, fine, I'm sorry.

: Just ignore her, Goon-chan.

: You shouldn't lie like that. It isn't good!

: Whatever, Suzu! I didn't lie, I'm just... taking a while to get around to it.

: Per usual.

: Well, it motivated her. So I guess it worked.

: I should go too... I have much work to do before the semester starts.

Well, at least I was right with the name order at the start of the game.

We go back to school, get judged for being bad at science while we're trying to fix that.

Friday, April 27

: Aww, how sad...

: What are you guys doing for Golden Week?

: Are you visiting home, Alice?

: No... I thought about it, but I think I'll visit after school is over... Besides, I love Golden Week so much!

: Teehee, me too... I'm planning on cooking a feast every night! You all are welcome over anytime...

: Yay!

: What are you doing, Rena?

: Hmm... Hiroshi is coming home, so I would like to spend the week with him...

: I'm jealous.

I'd love to ask whether we could join but that's a negative option. And while we seem to be fine with Alice, I'd rather not gamble when we have so little time left.

: Teehee, you can always calls someone if you're bored, Goon-chan.

: Yes... or that...

I never really notice Golden Week in these games. Sure we see this one event, but aside from that, nothing special seems to happen.

It's been a pretty quiet month so we decided to head out to the Theatre later and see if we find anyone.

Until then, we get some study done.

...

Game: You hang out in the lobby of Cinema Shira Oka for a while, hoping to see someone you know. After an hour, you realise that nobody you know has arrived. As you decided to cut your losses and leave, Satsuko walks in.

Could've hung out with that guy at the counter. I never remember him.

: Goon! Have you been waiting here long? I guess you didn't get to hang out with anyone today, but maybe next time!

Game: Satsuko enthusiastically picks out a movie and you spend the rest of the afternoon with her in the theater.

Well, it happens.

Might be a bit more productive than this. At least we weren't getting stressed out by the cinema.

Monday, June 4

: What time?

: Swim season's starting! And even better- Hiroshi's not on the team this year!

: Heh, good for you.

: Heehee. Even better... I was hoping you'd want to join.

:toot:

: You get to move up from towel manager- I'm sure you can do it for real this time!

: Sure thing! Sounds like fun.

And with that, we finally have access to swimming. I'll show that off later.

We're getting into close to the final act of this loop. Feels like we'll be fine. And that's a drat good feeling.

Mysticblade
Oct 22, 2012

We've got exams coming up in a month but we should be fine. Let's roll.

Monday, June 11

Hmm, it kind of feels like we've barely seen Kazuki this run. Then again, we're really unpopular and only passing science so that makes sense.

: Well, I'm glad that...er, well, that this all worked out.

: Teehee! I'm glad that we get the opportunity to be super-expressive here.

: Hey, what's up?

: And I accepted. It was a great idea, and it'll keep the snafu we usually go through from happening this year. It'll be easier now that Hiroshi's gone. He gave Aya the "honor" of taking over his job as Culture Festival head.

: "Gave her the honor?"

: It's just all the work nobody wants to do. He made it sound fancy though so she'll think it's a big compliment to her abilities!

: Poor Aya. Everyone knows she doesn't really like to actually work.

: Poor Aya! Doesn't know the satisfaction of a great job well done. Anyway, Rena's idea was a brilliant one, I think.

: Oh? What did you go with?

: Really? Everyone was so opposed to that before.

: Well, er... I always liked it, because...

: Well, I just didn't like it before as it wasn't academic, but... they explained a way we could do it.

That wouldn't fill me with hope.

: Oh, er...easy. We let the art students paint... um, the cutouts of the ghosts and stuff.

: And Rena said we can use it to teach mythlogy and folklore!

: That is fantastic! Rena will be happy.

I find it difficult to be mean to Kazuki most of the time. Like Aya, but the opposite.

: It sure will be. And she will be overjoyed.

: She's been trying to get this for YEARS now, I'm sure Rena will be.

: I have some gears in the garage... let's head to the dump to get more.

And with that, preparations for our third culture festival can begin.

But before that, Aya's here to complain about our lack of popularity. Eh, whatever.

Here's us swimming. The sports increase seems a little lower than I remember but that could a lack of successes along with a lowish Fitness.

Aya has also replaced Hiroshi in the culture festival preparations. Now how does that fail look now...?

...Of course.

We just kind of worked on the culture festival before this test. We got a bit of science study in and some more swimming but it wasn't really much.

We're probably fine.

I really want to get the super fail for swimming. It's hilarious.

We did alright. Nothing special, so I'll just present this to you instead.

This amuses me more than it should. Feels weird to think that we got a B in Lit this run.

Kiku's here about our awful Lit marks. We say we'll do better since it's the polite option.

Friday, July 20

: Yes...

: I always love getting to go back to class after a decent break. So many things will get done. It's a good period for preparation.

: ...

: Hey, you two.

: Y...yes. I was going to the library...

: So you read a lot, Yui?

: It is warm there...

: Um.

: Tea leaves, huh...?

: And I saw a prediction.

: I can feel it deep within me.

: Scary...

: Not necessarily. Big things are always happening, and everyone's opinion of something big is different.

: I... I am not sure I...

: Some people think that only things like, say, a baby being born are big. I think every little miracle is serious... such as a moth emerging from its cocoon... or the pansies opening in the morning.

: Er, what was the question?

:downs:

: Your mind is much too cluttered, Goon! You should meditate more.

We should. Pity we can't meditate yet.

: A...actually, that was a bit confusing.

Now she's reminded me of Odin Dark - "The darkness whispers..."

: I thought you said... tea.

: Oh...

: Either way... do be careful in the next few months, Goon. You too, Yui. I sense something big.

: ...

: Have a good day, you two. I'm heading home to prepare for the upcoming break.

We get some more swimming/art/science done and then Obon pops up. We don't really get many events since our popularity is so low. Either that or most people don't care enough about us.

Monday, August 13.

Obon only comes around once a year, but when it does, we spend it together... just like the last two years.

Game: You and your family once again spend the first day of Obon together, doing everything that needs to be done. Most of your family is present at your house, extended family included, for the celebration. A good time is had by all, and afterwards, you head to your room, exhausted.

: Yes, it tired me right out.

: Family gatherings will do that to a guy. Don't worry, though, the big festival day is tomorrow. You'll get to hang out with all of your family again.

That is going to wear me out too...

: It's going to be so much fun, isn't it? Ah, I hope you have fun, anyway... You better get to bed. It's a long day tomorrow and you already had a long day today.

: Alright... goodnight, Satsuko.

: Good night, Goon.

Some times, Satsuko just comes off as real suspicious, doesn't she?

Wednesday, August 15

Game: Everyone becomes silent as a single red lantern is set onto the water. The lanterns slowly fade into the distance, the red one last to go.

Kasumi threw out the red lantern but who was it meant for?

Oh well, I'll remember eventually.

Sunday, August 26

: Grrr...!

: What is it, Aya?

And this time we even got to swim. Swimming may be limited but it's still good.

: Yeah, I guess everything is going to change after graduation.

: Ugh, don't even remind me! I don't want to think about that at all... leaving my whole life behind...

: Can't fight the future, Aya.

: I guess I'm just worried... You... you don't think anybody is going to forget about me, do you?

: It's natural for friends to drift apart after high school.

:unsmigghh:

: You really think so? ....

: Oh, okay.

That felt WAY better than it should have.

Friday, August 31

: Hey, what are you doing here?

: Oh, I just stopped by for a visit!

: I see...

: ...

: You did?

: I wanted to give you a gift.

: A gift? Why?

: I'm just so proud of you, Goon! You're really growing up right in front of my eyes...

: What? How can you do that?

You should click that. It's a video and you'll get to hear some of Shira Oka's voice acting.

Not gonna transcribe that, I'll just be waiting here for you to watch that.

I think I just saw...

...her real feelings, didn't I...?

: Satsuko? Where are you?

Game: You look around, but Satsuko is nowhere to be found.

We won't be seeing her for a bit, I believe.

Welcome to Alice's route.

We're going to have some fun now.

:unsmigghh:

Wait, this is the Moon.
How did I even get here?

Pillbug
Well. That was a thing.

I'm getting the impression that a limited selection of piano music will be the least of our problems though :ohdear:

Neat. Sweet. Petite.

I feel like if they didn't go for Voice acting at all, they could've used the money saved to hire a better artist - the VAs are nice, but the art probably caused a lot of people to click away.
