Ouch that's rough. Copycats so fast that you end up looking like you're reselling off alibaba, that's rough. Also NEAR MISS but I almost idly asked how much weight that added to a phone; realized with embarrassment that I almost referred to weight when I meant mass. God is my face red

lol if you think that the kickstarter wasn't just someone selling that selfie stick for 8 times the price.

I can't help but imagine the feeling of having a copycat nail your poo poo as described though. But gently caress anyone who tries to pull the victim card like that for actually reselling. The Eyes Have It fucked around with this message at 13:46 on Oct 24, 2016 |

A kickstarter for a stick taped to a phone case. I mean if your product idea is so shallow that all someone has to do is eyeball your concept photos to recreate it, your IP probably shouldnt be protected. A lot of high end racing quadcopter designs get copied and sold on banggood before the official one is released now, for a third of the price or less, but they're all just flat 2d designs on carbon fiber, and often the design is so thin and minimal now that you can't argue in favor of the original designer for stuff like CF quality (since they're all gonna snap when they hit a tree at 60mph regardless of how nice your cf sheets were). The US vendors still sell plenty because of the shipping time and better support, and some guys manage to work out deals with the chinese manufacturers to differentiate product moron izzard fucked around with this message at 14:57 on Oct 24, 2016 |

I don't actually disagree with any of that stuff, I just can't help but think it would suck for an otherwise on the level person to learn it the hard way. I mean there's business failures and sure and that's life but now you get the added bonus of people on the internet lighting molotovs and sending you death threats and poo poo, and everyone who ever googles your name thinks you're a scammer because of course you used your real name, etc because you were on the level following the normal steps. If it happened because you tried to pull something then there's an element of play stupid games win stupid prizes but if not then man I just think it's a heavy price for simply being kinda clueless.

I dunno, it doesn't seem like he's getting accused of being a scammer except by a few nut jobs on the kickstarter page. his biggest failure is not seeing this coming. in the cell phone accessory business a cheap Chinese knockoff is an absolute certainty for any product with even the slightest wiff of success. doubly so for the selfie stick market. there is also approximately zero chance to get a patent because the basic concept has been around since the 80s (or earlier if you realize that a monopod is basically selfie stick with additional functionality)

i can kinda see it as an attempt to push the limits of how fancy you can get before it's not a composition notebook anymore. It looks cool and seems like it would be usable for it's intended purpose (bragging to other paper nerds). gonna keep using my green Federal Supply Service hardbound RECORD books though.
