It isn't that hard to get along with people out there and they don't have a problem with journalists as long as they are respectful. Silento Boborachi posted:Regardless, the whole thing is dumb. Nah, its actually pretty amazing. When I was out there, there were representatives from over 250 tribes from Ecuador to northern Canada and everywhere in between. Someone told me about that but they just said they called them "lying press" just like the Nazis, which I thought was kind of a stretch even if I'm strongly anti-Trump. I didn't realize they straight up used the same German word. Picture tax: Hookah break on the road to Mosul, picture by Ali Arkady

(Un)Fun Fact: The term also regained popularity in Germany recently, mostly used by protesters who are angry that the media is refusing to report that immigrants and refugees are totally going to topple western civilisation any day now. It's maybe not quite as damning because it works as an actual word in German, but still displays some pretty staggering ignorance of history.

Or maybe it's a direct result of the complete destruction of socialism by the west. After all it's a thing that happened much more recently, and this explanation wouldn't rely on you defending Nazi Germany's "civil society". The west had more than enough time to restore "hope and human dignity" since reunification if it really cared about opposing fascism. It's pretty stupid and ahistorical and irresponsible to try to argue that fascism isn't something that is produced by capitalism and somehow blame it on the one historical force against it.

It's easy to be a pundit smugly pontificating about how good the subservient nations had it under the USSR, when you are looking at them from the comfort of a warm living room, with a full stomach. Disillusion and resentment are produced by alienating the person from the world in the sense of convincing him that there is nothing he can consciously do to better his own condition in any way, and that the world around him only works to hold him back, even if just due to complacency or apathy. And Communist regimes excelled in that. steinrokkan fucked around with this message at 15:13 on Oct 24, 2016 |

Capitalism might starve people, but at least it feeds them the dream that they might escape their condition some day (and makes them internalize their starvation as their own personal failure) Keep pretending that everything's fine, liberals, and opposing the only people who are actually combating fascism, I'm sure the future will turn out great just like how the last 50 years of international liberal policies have turned out. If there's anything that capitalism is good at, it's centralizing ownership, control, and planning of production. I don't really understand why people dig up deaths by famine when they want to prove why communism is bad. Sorry to break it to you but if you want to play the numbers game of deaths by starvation under a given economic system, history doesn't exactly make capitalism come out on top...

French revolutionary Maximilien Robespierre participated in a heinous reign of terror in the wake of the French revolution. Lord Protector Oliver Cromwell starved countless Irishmen to death and otherwise found ways to torture and murder them. This shows that while I agree absolute monarchy is bad, republicanism has failed pretty badly.

quote:Whataboutism is a term describing a propaganda technique used by the Soviet Union in its dealings with the Western world during the Cold War. When criticisms were leveled at the Soviet Union, the response would be "What about..." followed by the naming of an event in the Western world. It represents a case of tu quoque or the appeal to hypocrisy, a logical fallacy which attempts to discredit the opponent's position by asserting the opponent's failure to act consistently in accordance with that position, without directly refuting or disproving the opponent's initial argument.
