Dear Goonhouse, I never thought it would happen to me, but...

Slightly overdramatising things, but my father has just informed me that one of my nieces is considering teaching English in the mainland and he's after any advice I can pass on to her. My knee-jerk response would be DON'T thanks to this thread, but I figure I can at least try and provide something more constructive. Anyone got any sage advice or better alternative countries for teaching english in?

if she has a college degree, no criminal record, not morbidly obese (this might be ok), not black (this definitely required), can tolerate children, and is not afraid of maybe becoming an alcoholic, Korea is ok for a short stint.

She has no degree, which makes me wonder if this isn't just an excuse to see more of the world, in which case fair enough. Also she isn't black, but there is some Australian Aboriginal in her bloodline, so that might factor in too.

First line of advice is "don't". A good suggestion is that if the school/agency/company says to come in on a tourist of business visa and then they will change it to work visa later, then don't take that offer, that cannot be stated enough.

If she has no degree she basically can't be working legally and above-board anywhere, so she'll have to look for somewhere that won't matter as much. Try Cambodia or Thailand?

If she doesn't have a degree she's going to have a difficult time finding a good job. If she just wants to take a crap job illegally, may as well if she doesn't have much going on for her back home I guess? Can't imagine it will be that great of an opportunity but if she's open minded and looking for an adventure I guess it couldn't hurt

Personally i think china could use more adventurous, brave, female teaching talent and less fat balding white losers who travel half way across the planet because they can't get laid at home. At least one of the two doesn't engender deep seated resentment among the local populace.

I'm guessing you're an actual English teacher who's native Chinese in order to know exactly how hard it is and the plentiful availability of local instructors like yourself who also know the thousands of random idioms and sayings that can't be taught in a textbook.

No actually there are a lot of fluent non-native English speakers who are aware of these things considering how pervasive English-language media is, it just doesn't attract customers as much as handing a textbook to some prospectless dropout from the anglosphere who's far worse at their job than the aforementioned people would be.

On the bright side, said failsons/daughters tend to be so desperate that they can be paid about as much as a local.

"For those people that were hurt by my song, please understand that it was taken out of context and misconstrued," Murphy's latest no-pology goes. "I promise it was not mean-spirited. I have a big heart and I'm a goof-ball." She reveals that she planned on doing a music video for "I Want to be Neenja" with her Asian friend Peter, who happens to do a great impression of Chow from the Hangover trilogy. And Peter's not her only Asian friend. The Asian woman in the Laguna Hills launch party performance video is also her friend, too.

"She is a very sweet young woman who likes me and likes my song. English is not her first language as she moved here from China only a few years ago," Murphy explains. "The night of my party she didn't understand much of what I was was singing, and her shy smile and somewhat perplexed expression has been falsely misrepresented by the media and bloggers all over."

On 22 October 2016, a Youtube clip showing a few Thai women in Sweden looking for a Thai woman named ‘Wanphen’ was posted.

In the video, the women visit an apartment where Wanphen is believed to be residing. They knock on the door, but leave shortly after the rooms’ occupants do not answer.

One of the women in the video then utters swear words in Thai against Wanphen as she walks out of the apartment building.

On the same day, another Thai man residing in Sweden posted a similar Youtube clip vowing that he will hunt for Wanphen and slap her once he finds her.
Before the 2014 coup d’état, Wanphen put up several Youtube videos and Facebook posts with content deemed defamatory to the Thai monarchy.

I mean it's just basic observation. Maybe learning the most popular native language on the planet might confer certain advantages. Is that really so hard for you to grasp? Perhaps if they explained it in a listicle or in a huffington post article it would be at your reading level. If you're lucky, trump tv will take a crack at it.

The only real objection could be that Spanish is way more useful in the US. People in the anglosphere in general just have an immediate negative reaction to the notion that learning a second language is a good idea, regardless of the language, because we already know the best language!!. Meanwhile the fact that half the countries in the world force kids to learn English as a second language is cool and good despite the fact that it's actually less common than Spanish and Chinese.

It's no coincidence that a lot of these people tend to extol the virtues of French, a loving useless language, because it has white connotations, rather then associations with Latin Americans and Asians like the actually useful world languages of Spanish and Chinese.

You didn't argue this from the standpoint of "any new skill is a good thing." You based your argument on "it has the most speakers in the world!" when that doesn't do a single goddamn thing for its usefulness when almost all those speakers are confined to one country with little to no contact with the outside world and have an income below 5k a year.
