what type should wood related mons (like Phantump and Tapu Bulu) and attacks (like Wood Hammer) be if not Grass

it's the only type out of all 18 that makes sense

Normal, wood is a pretty normal thing :colbert:

smash the typearchy. There should be more pokemon like Flygon, Stunfisk, Sudowoodo etc. who don't look like normal members of their typings. That limits design space a ton and would rob us of cool things like the Island guardians because they'd all have to be part grass

GF hasn't cared about that since the very start of the series when they gave it to Venusaur, Vileplume, Victreebel, Tangela, Exeggcute etc. which all have nothing to with grass. So a handful of wood related mons and moves can be lumped in with it just fine.

actually my uncle works at nintendo and he said that starters are 50/50 now

That's fine. Even just random assortments of letters works. I played Pokemon Go for about 2 days and before I got fed up with it being ~95F outside and only finding pidgeys and rattatas I just gave them whatever garbage came to mind. I did pretty much the same thing in Y. It just made me sad to receive Wonder Trades with no nicknames. Ash Ketchum instilled bad values in children.

Pokemon in general are rarely nicknamed in the show because it's an advertisement and they want to keep things straight.

If Ash had nicknamed his pokemon you'd instead see wondertrade inundated with the same nickname on repeat, which is worse than no nickname at all really.

I'd been planning on naming Decidueye Artemis since it was first hinted that she was an archer, way back when. It was that or Athena.

Persephone is a good ghost name, though. I'll probably name my Mimikyu Persephone.

I honestly think they should do that by now imo. It made sense in earlier gens because breeding would be harder (needing to obtain a Ditto for the most basic of breeding) and thus getting multiple of your starter would be a very good thing for the playground, but now anyone can just type the name of any starter and get them for a random bird or for Arceus, so now there's no real reason the starter should be most likely male.

Which is why they should've gone the JoJo (or, yknow, the Pokemon manga) route and had a new protagonist for every new region.
