So the main "human difficult" part of this is that Maria had the key, but that would have been easy to fix - give her an envelope with a different key (or with nothing, Maria won't bring up anything witch-contradictory) and then replace it after setting up the scene. This isn't evidence of a witch, just a very dedicated and sick human. Oh, and it is interesting that Kinzo can remember messing up so badly before. Maybe. Also someone should tell the "witch" that piņatas aren't really a Halloween thing, and that this would have been more appropriate for Maria's birthday.

Unless there's an alternate entrance (seems unlikely but hasn't been discounted yet) or duplicate keys (which has again been openly denied), it's the clearest way for it to not be yet another closed room. It would certainly be easier to lock up afterwards and swap the key with a dummy object that was previously explained but never confirmed to be one, and it would likewise be easier to get into the room where the younger Ushiromiyas were sleeping than it would to open and close the shed they dumped the bodies into in the first part. Of course the person with access to the tools to make the Official looking Ushiromiya seal can just as easily make a few letters to swap them around, or seal or unseal at their leisure.

Maria would trust anything Beatrice said, and Rosa would be a witness to it being said, so all she'd have to do is say there's a key even if it was just another of those pumpkin suckers to begin with, only to swap out envelopes after the fact.

Well, there are a couple of others- his friendship with Nanjo seems to be very real, as well as his relationships with the servants; for all that he's a terrible father, he does seem to be a pretty good boss. We can see the hallmarks of his parenting all over, though; Rosa is the most obvious example, but there's the way that the kids aren't allowed to be around when they talk about the inheritance with Grandpa... is it really because it's grownup business, or is it the adults frantically trying to keep their children from the same abuse they received growing up? Are they even allowed to be in the same room alone with Grandpa? We don't know yet since he's been kept away from the family so far (for an as yet unknown reason), but it makes me dread when it actually gets shown what life in his household was like. I kinda wonder if Gohda is going to get some characterization, because Jesus, what a brown-nosing piss-ant... His absolute horror at seeing his sugar daddy stuffed to the brim with actual sugar already does a lot to humanize him.

Or was this witch from the Legend of the Gold the culprit, like Maria said?! Even if Jessica hadn't let her short temper get the better of her, in this situation, the visitor was probably the most suspicious. However, we couldn't decide just like that. Aaah, it's no good, it's no good, it's no goddamn good at all...!! I smacked my face with both hands again, cooling off my brains before they got too hot. Even though it might have been a wasted effort.  On a tray piled up with sweets that decorated the table, George-aniki found a western envelope which had the Ushiromiya family crest on it in gold leaf. And it was unopened.  "So, doesn't this mean it was sent to us? If it was something Dad and the rest read, it should be open." "...It seems your reasoning is correct. It's written here. A folded letter came out.  That letter really was a joke. This Beatrice, who called herself an Alchemy counsellor, had proclaimed that she was collecting the gold she had lent Grandfather with interest. And that interest was everything that Grandfather had given birth to. Since this tragedy was right before our eyes as this paragraph was read aloud, it wasn't only referring to all of the wealth that Grandfather had created. It was literal. Everything that Grandfather had given birth to... in other words, all of Grandfather's descendants were included in the interest! "You bastard!! What a screwed up contract! Lives as interest on gold, you say?! That's almost like a contract with the devil. isn't it?! Is that how you pretend to be a witch?! Ha, you make me laugh!!" "...Special clause. However, should someone discover the afore-mentioned gold, Beatrice shall renounce all rights to its recovery for all time. Hmmmmmmm... As for the cache of the gold, Kinzo-sama has already edicted it in the epitaph beneath my portrait..." "...In other words, it's something like this. If the motive for these murders was collection of the interest, the condition for stopping it, is to try and find the hidden gold she gave to Grandfather... that's what it's saying. And it also says that this secret is hidden in the epitaph from that portrait." "In other words, this is a letter of challenge from the witch? If anyone thinks they can solve the coded paragraph where the location of the hidden gold is written, then try to do it?! And if we can't, it's saying that the collection of the interest will continue as planned?" "I'll beat you to death, no problem!!!" "...B, Battler-kun! Look... here!!!"The table had been full of sweets, so even though it had been right in the open, we had assumed it was a sweet. I mean, come on, you find stuff like this a lot, right? Come on, it might have been a box shaped like a golden ingot, filled with chocolate...!  "...It's inscribed with the crest of the One-winged Eagle... I heard Mother talking about it earlier. This is a gold bar from Granfather's Legend of the Gold...!!"A gold ingot weighing a full 10 kilograms... wait, three of them, were piled up in the very center of the table! It was where a cake would be placed if it was a birthday party. In other words, this was without a doubt the birthday cake of the party known as the family conference! "If these are really four nines quality ingots...nn, *gulp*. I, it's worth about 60 million yen!" "Dumbaaaaaaaaaaasss!!! That's too cheap!!! Our parents have been killed, and all the gold you've piled up is only worth 60 million yen?! Don't take us for fools, drat iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit!!!" "...Kihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihi. Jesus loving CHRIST!!   Suddenly the bandwagon of all of this being done by some horrific entity beyond human reason looks more tempting than ever, because nothing that has ever been human pulls faces like that. But I'm not going to jump on it quite yet, because of a thing I've noticed... Beatrice's appearance is reactive to Battler, and thus to the reader, makes me think there's something more going on here. At first, we didn't see Beatrice as anything other than a memory or a legend based around some picture, and the murders as horrific, but well within the realm of possibility to be committed by a human suspect. But once the murders piled up and the first episode ended, enter Beatrice in all her splendor as a fabulous witch with a dress and a wand, right out of Maria's stories, and acted right nicely until Battler challenged her, which brought out a more sinister side. And then when this episode began, we saw from the servants perspective how they- or rather how Shannon- saw her: a melancholy spirit trapped on the island, who looks after those who respect her and help people see love. But the minute the viewpoint shifts to Kanon, we see a sinister, cackling demoness, a dark fairy who meddles with other peoples lives for her amusement. And now, after Battler has witnessed the abomination that the Six Sacrifices were turned into this go-round, that's what Beatrice looks like to him now: an abomination, for who could do something so monstrous but an actual monster? To put it simply: Beatrice has been portrayed as whatever the character seeing her portrays her as in their mind, and that makes it difficult for me to call her a person in her own right. She's quite a character, certainly... but does that mean she's real? Take her away... Well there it is, the crux of the matter. It's not that she doesn't think this horrible thing is actually great, and it's not that she shinks she's a monster or wants to grow up to be a monster herself, or particularly wants to hurt anybody: she's just laser focused on the Golden Land, the promise of the witch that there's a place where dreams come true and no one gets hurt. It's her castle on a cloud. There's a thing I've been thinking about Maria and her relationship to the Witch, that persona in which she creepily cackles but also drops her placeholder sound and speaks her age, maybe a little beyond. She assumes it typically after the existence of magic, Beatrice, witches, or the Golden Land is questioned or denied, but there was another place this chapter where she threw it up: after her mother beats her and literally tramples on her dreams, and she's at her lowest and least powerful point. Powerlessness... that causes her to throw the Witch up, not because she's trying to be mean or creepy, but because she wants to protect herself and feel more powerful in the face of what threatens her. There's a phrase that comes up in psychological analysis that I do not know is appropriate here, IANAP, but here it is: The Witch is Maria's protector identity, something she created and even gifted higher cognitive ability to in order to protect the one real hope that things will get better she has. It's the same sort of obsession that Kinzo displays, and for a lot of the same reason: Magic has to be real, Beatrice must exist, and the faith that she puts in solving the Epitaph will be rewarded in the end.
