Eliminating the statute of limitations is generally thought to be very unfair to the defense, because if you are accused of something 25 years ago, no one remembers anything, receipts or pictures you had on your phone that might have helped your side are gone, witnesses who could have helped you are dead, etc. We make an exception for murder because, well its murder.
