In theory, if Trump wins they get a conservative SCOTUS judge, probably another when RBG retires. They get influence over the redistricting in the next census. Etc. They're banking on him being a puppet and going along.

So there are things at stake and that's making them cling to partly loyalty. (Also it's all they know how to do.)

A Republican-nominated judge will only get RBG's seat from her cold, dead hands.

I kinda feel like a Democratic-nominated judge will have the same issue. RBG doesn't want to retire as far as I know, regardless of who is president.

While I would not want to rush her, I have the feeling her internal calculus will change at least a little if she knows her replacement won't be appointed by Donald God drat Trump.

She'd really need to retire before 2018 if her goal was to make sure that her seat goes to a decent replacement, and that's assuming the best case scenario of the Dems taking the Senate.

I can't even imagine what a poo poo show it would be. I guess it would actually be Pence nominating anyone, but who the gently caress knows. Might be Peter Thiel. Or Barron Trump.

If true she'll have to retire in, like, a year. Tops. Otherwise the Republicans will pull the same poo poo they did this time around and since their base is for obstruction it doesn't carry any risk.

Trump's released lists of people who he'd consider nominating for the Supreme Court, and they're all standard right-wingers who'll repeal Roe and Obergefell rather than any weird off-the-wall alt-right types. Most likely he was just fed the names by the party and he personally doesn't care much.

Probably the smartest thing he did in the campaign. If he'd "kept people in suspense" he would probably not be getting that vital sheen of people who would murder their own children for SCOTUS control.

Nate is trying to account for a Trump x-factor I think. He's assuming that the polls are wrong as far as I know. He may be right, but I would pay more attention to PEC. Still vote, but Hillary should have this in the bag. I think y'all are freaking out a bit too much.

Lol isn't this all because Nate thought Trump had no chance during the primaries then got shook when Trump got the nomination? I still think Nate is great but he's definitely lost the plot... Like I said there's part of me that thinks hey maybe he pinned down some x-factor poo poo since he is a smart guy, but realistically that's extremely unlikely.

Or the fact that the election rests on a handful of swing states that keep polling back and forth between the candidates and the overall polling this election has been wildly erratic. The no tossup electoral map on RCP right now is 273-265 Clinton. If you think a one-state single digit EV margin = 99-100% chance of victory then I'm not sure what to say at all really. I live in a double-digit (R) state so I don't really have much of a say in this election; but the people who are predicting a roman triumph for Clinton are insane to me.

It is the same model, but the now cast which is the number in question uses polls-only and is set as if today was the election day, and on top of that weights recent polls more.
