I'm having the same issue with Frostfall I had with Project Nevada, which is that while it's admittedly a feat of engineering, it still feels cumbersome and hacked-on alongside the native mechanics of the game. Having to manage all the powers and then set up camp and then only being able to access the perk menus using a floating bug-form UI is a lot of steps to manage a meter. I can't be bothered to use it enough to make the toll on your carry weight worth it. Cool concept, but the #1 way to gently caress up my immersion is to give it a bunch of dials and levers that take a good minute to properly access.
You're probably approaching Frostfall wrong. It isn't a QoL mod. It is the exact opposite of a QoL mod. It does nothing but make trouble for you. It only works when you apply that same philosophy to everything.

Disable Fast travel.

Inn and carriage services? Increase their cost 10 fold.

Install iNeed. Enable the feature to cull food items from the world and containers. You have to buy or hunt for food.

If you can find one, install a tax mod, that imposes recurring cost on horses, houses (you own property), and followers (you are an 'employer').

You could drop 100g on a night at the Inn... but doing that for a week is going to add up, and you NEED to sleep.

The deeper you go, the less Frostfall is an arbitrary novelty, and the more it is an integrated part of the game. You can't just go halfway. Go big or go home. Even the above isn't far enough for me, but simply disabling fast travel is a very huge first start.

I guess, but surely it could be just as punishing without making you navigate a bunch of menus. Why couldn't it just be press button to set up camp -> resources are consumed, meters are filled? That's kind of what I was expecting when I downloaded the mod (haven't installed it yet), but the posts in here are really harshing my buzz, man.

Real Needs mods have never added anything to a game for me. Frostfall was interesting because it promised a new way for the character to dynamically relate to hostile environments as they moved through them from point to point (like STALKER, or Dying Light, which include their share of desperate scrambling for the nearest safe place once dusk hits). What I'm not hype for is a new way to account for daily dietary fiber intake.

Having to eat and drink and carry different kinds of armor around for different environments, none of that is fun, and the way it's been integrated isn't particularly immersive. I had one bit of good stuff from Frostfall so far, which was strategically constructing small camps along the climb to High Hrothgar. Even though my character was a light armor specialist and didn't really need to stop and tend fires it added the cosmetic appearance of a new challenge. I could envision my character having to deal with summit wind storms in a practical fashion, even if the mod's actual simulation was abstruse.

It's total conversion's natural flaw, from that goon-led Diablo 2 mod to Project Nevada to Long War - you need to constantly patch on newer and more fidgety elements to ensure the last ones are working as intended. Over time deep cracks in design tend to reveal themselves and the game becomes far less forgiving. I've also yet to play a forage-or-die game that didn't break itself once you got past the quarter mark. I imagine there's a mod to make food spoil so you have two hours to cook raw food and then another two hours to eat it before it becomes worthless? I'm getting pumped just thinking about it.

I've fiddled with exposure rates to try and make them interesting and there's no happy medium between "minor inconvenience" and "floor is lava whenever you're outside" that I've found. Certainly nothing that made me think "thank God I selected a drop zone for my fireplace and triggered the 15 second flint-and-tinder animation, my rear end was almost grass."

I'd much rather play a TC of Skyrim that removed everything but the butterfly collecting, honestly, were it not for the fact that I've had fast travel disabled for awhile and... Skyrim's just not that fun to move through. Some of the environments are quite spectacular but they lack the character and density of FO4, which really made the most of disabling fast travel. Skyrim has its biomes but they're not as stimulating as a massive city ruin.

i was approaching Frostfsll as an environmental hazard mod rather than a needs mod. It borked itself about the point I realized that most spots on the map allowed you to harvest wood while your campfire was active, thereby removing near all risk from resource gathering as long as you have the materials to start a 3 hour glow.

Obviously I don't agree that the ways to play Skyrim should be straight vanilla or full-on Minecraft transplant job.

I guarantee you most of the MUH IMMERSION people haven't even heard of Robinson's Requiem. It's a separate phenomenon where people mistake verisimilitude (:barf:) for realism. Or fun, more accurately. You see it all the time in other genres besides RPG mods.

I've been trying to use the magnet downloads on the Nexus for the NMM, and it says they cannot be used because Skyrim SE is a different game to Skyrim, and it will not load or attempt to load them. Is this a bug or something that can be gotten around?

how are people getting it to work? Do you have to select the Skyrim SE folder and set it up as a normal Skyrim instead of selecting the Skyrim SE option?

No, am using NMM. NMM recognises Skyrim and Skyrim Special Edition, so I selected Skyrim SE, but when I go to download a Skyrim mod via the Magnet links (have set NMM to handle Nexus magnet links), it says no compatible game is found to use the mod with. I don't have original Skyrim installed anymore either, but I thought that it would allow me to auto-manage the mods for Skyrim SE the same way it would for Skyrim.

Edit for possible retardation: So now Nexus has a SSE specific section, I am assuming that no magnet links in the S section will work for SSE, regardless of whether or not the mod is actually compatible. I am an idiot. And now have to manually manage all the mods that have not been ported forward myself

Oh, sorry. I didn't catch that as the meaning intended to be conveyed.

I am not sure what else one could use. MO doesn't work with SEE and the MO2 beta thing floating around doesn't either. Most of the good mods aren't on steam, so that leaves NMM, as the only integrated and somewhat manageable solution, that I know of.

Yeah a large part of what makes Frostfall tweakable to my liking is done through SKSE stuff like assigning warmth values to other armors or cranking up the ones already there. As a vanilla experience Frostfall falls pretty hard into the harsh for realisms sake trap, at least for me.

Wyre Bash, if you know how to use it. It's worth learning how to use, in my opinion, unless you absolutely need a virtual file system for whatever reason and are willing to wait for however long the new MO/NMM takes to complete (months).

This is funny, because it makes it sound like Fort Skooma, which supports a dozen bandits, will be totally stripped of any food so as not to make it too ~easy~.

I could get behind a gritty, low-fantasy RPG build from the ground up with survival elements, but Skyrim seems like a silly base for it.

I'm not gonna lie the idea of using your magic to irresponsibly summon evil creatures from beyond the veil just to stay warm is a good selling point for a survival mod.

There was a story I read about an Ops guy on a naval vessel a long time ago. It was morning and everyone was gathering in the mess for breakfast. The storyteller describes the guy in question as "zombie ops" because he is so tired, he's struggling to stay awake and eat his bagel at the table, and all the while a ray of sunlight is pouring through the window and hitting him directly in the face. So what the ops guy does is call up to the bridge and tell them to change course ever so slightly in whatever military speak it was, and the storyteller slowly realized as the sunlight was not shining directly on the guy's face anymore.
