So what would the difference be to me as the driver? Can the MS do launch and tcs etc same as the emerald?

Also I THINK the std ECU is a pain in the rear end to use original accelerator and perhaps the canbus stuff? I recall when we did my mates R33 and used a camaro ECU it was a bloody pain in the arse!

I'll have to have a read about the sloppy mechanics guy!

What are the details for that engine?

Also you know they make ITBs for LS engines, right? :getin:

Sure but this isn't exactly a budget conscious (or even sane) build to start with. :haw:

While I agree with that, the amount of money LS ITB intakes cost is pretty loving obscene, especially for a part with limited actual performance benefit.

But they're cool as gently caress...

ITBs make everything better, even completely ordinary 4-cylinder engines.

I would be lying if I said I hadn't seriously considered ITBs for my EW12J4.

This goes for pretty much any ITB setup for any engine across the board.

The flame wars in Miata.net are endless over it, I got caught in the middle of one after test driving a Miata for Fuji Racing and was asked to give my opinion holy poo poo was that a mistake.

Suck on a straw. Yes, you can breathe, but it's hard and you have to pull. Now take the straw away and suck air in through your mouth the same way as when you were sucking on the straw. See how much more air you're getting and how immediate it is?

Instead of all the cylinders sucking air from a common space fed by a single hole, they each get their own hole.

I literally suggested it solely on the basis of "it's cool and not my money" though, IRL they are a bad value for what you get unless you have a bottomless budget and want your NA engine to be a perfect snowflake.

E: If I won the lottery I'd probably do a wacky engine swap with a destroked LS3 built to rev up to 8000+ RPM with ITBs and whatever the world's coolest headers are, just for the gently caress of it, but I'm not saying that's a smart plan in general.

There is much better throttle response without a doubt, but that only goes so far. If you want more POWA they are a waste of money when you could go forced induction for the same or less amount of money. That's pretty much the giant argument about them.

That being said they are awesome, especially on Miatas. If I had money to burn I'd have a built motor with an ITB setup on it and wouldn't even consider forced induction, just because I'm a minimalist nerd and love built N/A 4 cylinders.

There is a niche market for them but it's small and all the forced induction geeks make fun of them because how could you not want FAV HUNNERT?

ITBs make sense if you're running a car in a historic racing class, where you can't just slap forced induction on your engine.

So a big cam and ITBs are what you use on your built Volvo B18 and so on.

Yeah that edelbrook double tb ram intake thing is rad as hell.
It seems to be screaming TT. If I ever decide to add 2 litre turbos that's definitely the manifold I will use.
But would be fully forged motor by that point so $$$$$.
If I can make 500hp/ton I'll be over the moon and it should murder just about anything I come across.

I love ITBs but the price is just insane.
I love driving my mates itbd mx5 and my other mates itbd f20c ae86. It's exhilarating and adds another dimension to throttle response.

One of my mates runs an itbd LSX in his drift car but that's literally a no budget build and he dailies a murcielago along side it.

I also doubt I could fit itbs under my bonnet. But it's mainly the cost haha.

Which cheered me up.

I've been thinking about nice dashes. Does anyone have any thoughts? All my irl mates keep telling me I need a bosch one with logging but I looked at the prices and hahahahaha.
I care about legibility and brightness more than anything. Would be good if it can integrate everything like oil pressure etc.

Also does anyone know about sound? I'm having a HU with nav 100% and thinking of couple of speakers behind seats since I'll have to strip doors etc for cage. Yes it's weight but 5kg or whatever isn't going to bother me.

Hopefully car will be in the shop by the end of August.

I figured from the pictures you posted previously of a wrist pin casually discarded on the track side that it was bad.

This looks about consistent with 'bad.' Any idea on what happened to make the rod let go?

The design is flawed unfortunately. You can read a little about it here;
http://www.langracing.com/finding-a-real-solution-to-the-bmw-s54-rod-bearing-failure/
This is why I'd always recommend rebuilding the bottom end with ARP hardware. If I could go back in time, I would!
I believe they tried to remedy it slightly in the facelift, but they didn't haha!

Anyway!

Will you be able to keep cruise control / air con / stock gauges etc with the swap? Not that I imagine you necessarily care, just came to mind the other day when I was wondering what I would do with my ratty e46 tourer if I won the lottery.

I lost cruise when I fitted the non oem wheel. I never really used it much anyway.
Gauges are staying stock for now and will work as oem. Adding a big rear end oil pressure gauge on the dash though. Wanted to change to a really nice single screen setup but thousands for anything half decent that's legible so will have to wait a little while!
Air con SHOULD work. We're fitting LS compressor etc and wiring it up. May need specialist help ultimately though. Fingers crossed!

Oh aye forgot you changed the wheel. I guess fitting an aftermarket cruise stalk designed for an LS would likely work if you cared about it.

Yeah the logger IQ3 comes with a gps antenna and g-sensor, will display the odb/can info from the stock senders and allows additional sensors for whatever. But depending on the ecu there may be something better. Racepak is owned by haltech now so they should integrate together nicely. And then AEM has just announced their own dash display, I'm excited to hear more about that one. Seems like it going to be less expensive than a lot of existing options.
