If I post I had a nice day, my job was okay, I graded a good essay a student wrote about the difficulties of publishing history in China, my lunch was awesome and then I chilled out playing Civ 6, that's the majority of the time but also a boring post nobody gives a gently caress about. A dump truck blowing through a red light and pulling a turn so hard it flips over because the driver doesn't understand physics exists is much more entertaining. Some word salad and pondering, since it's my day off and I'm letting my food settle before I go out for the day. My Facebook and emails to my family are like "I had a nice walk today on my day off, took some photos, ate some noodles, and met my friend to talk about stuff." My big highlight is lately I got some yerba mate off Taobao and am jamming on a liter of that every morning. Except for the interactions with people and seeing stupid stuff when I am outside, it's not too alien from whatever normal existence we all tend to have. The dumb stories about women here are something exceptional, but those can be found elsewhere, too. Even the Mongol contacted me like a week after her meltdown before and she's so normal and nice now that there's nothing to say after weeks of her coming over regularly (though she was the one I posted that "Whose hair is this?" interaction last week). Once I get banned on SA, whatever interaction I have with people in this country will be forgotten and in the future just be like "Yep, I met a lot of strange people in China!" Then I contrast that whenever I am in India and it's more like (and this is normal, everyday real stories): "Jayesh and I went riding motorcycles the other night and we ate street food and we were so stuffed we couldn't ride home and had to sit at the chai stall for an hour trying to digest. I found a new paan guy that is legit and now I can't tell whose paan is better. That loving camel came back last night and the dogs went apeshit at 1am trying to make him leave and he kicked one. I spent $12 USD at the supermarket and my bags were so loaded that I had to take an auto-rickshaw home. While I was waiting in line, a college-aged kid that was a software engineer wanted an American opinion about iPhone vs. Android for his start-up app company. Dudes are still taking selfies with me without asking. There was another wedding in the neighborhood and I got invited to yet another free feast. The trainers at the gym keep trying (and succeeding) to touch/brush my dick while giving me tips on my form. I made serious eye contact with a guy taking a poo poo on the side of the road." Etc. Etc. China is really boring compared to India and there's an 80% chance once my time in China is up next year I will be going back to Hindustan for chaats and chats. India's cultural and political scene is infinitely more fascinating and hilarious (even just the news stories to post) than boring CCP face garbage, but there will never be a chance for a good India thread on SA due to no one knowing about it outside those Varanasi dead body river photos and the Muslim rape scandals, and a few backpackers who spent a week there getting ripped off and seeing the horrible tourist traps (or people going for work for a week and getting diarrhea in a tech city). It's a hard nut to crack, and even seasoned veterans go a little mad there after a while. Our now-defunct family business used to export a lot from India and as a kid I spent time there every year with my dad as he would search for new suppliers. As an adult I kept going because it felt like home in a way, despite seeing how much it changes every time I go. I have nearly three decades of contacts and friends there and it's more personal for me. China doesn't have that at all for me, except people like my boss now who will be a life-long contact and friend. I've worked in India and it was fun and not as frustrating as doing anything in China. The younger crowd are way more open-minded and really cool and at the same time there is a lot of fascination and and sharing. I can sit for hours and talk politics, religion, hobbies, etc., with most Indians and get a huge variety of opinions and feelings, but if I try that in China it's the same boring canned conversations and "We Chinese" bullshit. If there's ever a gripe, you'll find someone who immediately shares the same feeling and is open to explain about it. There's no "OMG, you hate all of us, don't you? WHY DO YOU COME HERE???" the second you have something to say that goes against the grain. It's more akin to this thread where you can all gripe together and then forget about it. There's also the satisfaction in knowing that the guy treating you like poo poo or being super lazy is equal-opportunity and is not doing so simply because of your skin color and the "We vs. foreigner" attitude. I'll never get the "You don't understand, we are just different in all ways and you're foreign and not aware of how unique we are" lecture. Plus, doing head wobbling and saying "TK" all day is kinda fun. China is OK, in my opinion. I don't find it particularly exciting or interesting on a cultural or social level, but it has its quirks, and its ups and downs. China will never give me that "home" feeling that I get in Thailand or India, but that's also just due to personal and family connections. I will always be the outsider in China, regardless of if I marry a local and speak the language, own a business, have hybrids, etc. I'm just on the other side of the China Versus The World ideology taught here and.. LOL, whatever. At least I can leave here and never come back if I don't want to.

It's so hard to find anyone local you can have a genuine conversation with. Four years in Korea and I probably have... five Korean friends like that? I've been in China a little over two years and I can only think of one. I do have Chinese friends who I can talk to normally but they were all people I met outside of China. The one I know here lived outside China for quite a while and is from a rather persecuted minority so she really is not a fan of this place. Finding a Chinese person who both likes China and is capable of a normal conversation is the white whale I've been chasing.

Mmmmmonoculture Even in Hong Kong, it doesn't matter if you are a flower arranger or photographer, ballet teacher or brewer, there is one "creative" box people try to fit into from the fashion they wear to holidays and everything in between. Sure there are variances, like which band in particular they like, but it's a kind of unwritten list you choose options from to define yourself. Before anyone mentions America or Europe, yes it happens there too but here it's like an American High School film turned up to 11

Outrail posted:It sounds like you're describing Stockholm syndrome. It's a combination of a lot of cultural factors. I'll try to break down the ones I see. 1 - I like talking about politics and very few Chinese people do. This is the easiest one to figure out--what's the point of having political opinions in the PRC? You aren't allowed to do anything with them. It's not a huge surprise that a lot of people just don't have much to say about it. 2 - People are very busy in school. At my school students are in class from 7:30 AM to 10:00 PM every day, including Sunday evening when they arrive for the week. This is the time when a lot of people in other countries develop their hobbies and interests, but Chinese people aren't given any opportunity to do so. 3 - The culture is focused on money to the near total exclusion of anything else. A lot of Chinese people don't know why you would spend time on something not related to finances. 4 - Having deep discussions on a topic usually requires some level of critical thought/background knowledge, and the education system supplies neither of those. Some people are self-motivated learners but plenty aren't, that's true anywhere. 5 - The us vs them mentality is instilled deep from childhood, and a lot of Chinese people can't see the world as anything other than Chinese v Foreign terms. They don't have any background or experience with other ways of viewing things, so everything gets put through the We Chinese and You Foreigners filter, which largely eliminates any real engagement. The people who don't buy into this also tend to be the people who go abroad, so you meet a lot more "normal" Chinese people outside China.
