like the whole idea of the dunning-kroeger effect is that you are not able to assess your own level, meaning you think you are better than what you are. it doesn't work when you have taken an exam that has actually assessed you and said that you are now at a level that allows you to speak fluently across multiple conversation topics.

Also there's the phenomenon where you have a conversation with the person on the phone and there are no problems, then suddenly he can't understand a word you say when you get there and are talking face to face. I have never been good enough at a language for this but I know many friends who have had this happen literally a bazillion times.

My Mandarin is awful and I live in Chengdu where nobody speaks Mandarin anyway, but most of the time people are pretty chill and we manage.

Tones are flattened a lot and sound quite a bit different than the standard. Lots of different words, the consonants are weird. Lots of Z and R sounds. I don't really know enough to tell in detail but I can manage often if someone speaks Mandarin slowly but when they speak Sichuan I have literally not a clue what they're saying. My bosses are native Cantonese speakers and also know Mandarin and can't understand Sichuan at all, and I have a couple friends from Guangdong who went to college here and told me the same thing.

The problem here is that they're told Sichuanhua is just a type of Mandarin, which it is not. If you're in Guangdong you know that Cantonese is a completely different language and so you learn Mandarin like it's a foreign language, and Cantonese people tend to be good at it. Sichuan people are raised to think they speak Mandarin with just a slight accent, so they don't make a lot of effort to learn it in school and end up speaking a weird mishmash.

The schools are trying to stop this. I saw this elementary school with a big electronic sign about it. I can't find the pic but it was like SPEAKING MANDARIN IS LOVING YOUR COUNTRY. GOOD STUDENTS DO NOT SPEAK SICHUANHUA.

E: I dunno if Magna Kaser reads this thread but he'd be able to tell you in detail, his Chinese is really good and he's lived here in Sichuan for a while.

If you say anything bad about Mao or the cultural revolution or that China is not a bastion of human rights or democracy, Vancouver's mayor personally comes to your home and calls you a racist and reports you to the Chinese government.

that would hold true if it were the same across the board but i literally sit in meetings at work in chinese and give presentations in chinese at work and talk to my boss and HR in chinese at work and they have zero problems ever understanding me, so either they are just nodding their heads and just guessing what i'm saying correctly for the past few years, or people giving me blank stares when i'm talking to them in chinese have the issues. i only have HSK4 level though, the guy i work with has HSK5 and the same thing happens to him.

it would be nice if the simple solution was to go home and practice more, but you've completely missed the point. i imagine you did it on purpose, though.

There's only one way to solve this now. Obviously a formal test is too . . . formal. You need to test it on the streets.

Here's what you do: wear a mask out in public and talk to people in Chinese. They won't know you're white, because of the mask! If they are able to understand you, rip off that mask and force them to talk to you like you're people.

It's still a real on the spectrum thing to do though. A lot of foreigners in Thailand can't help but to find some way to poo poo talk the king. No matter what your feelings are or what the facts are it's a really odd thing to do. It's like going over to someone's house as a kid and calling their mom fat or something.

Yeah. Mao's dead, there isn't really anything that you could say to change their minds. Things could have turned out worse, and China could have had Mao's son running the things to this day. China should be thankful for Noodles and South African bombers.

quote:

In an interview, Mr. Zhu, the communications law professor, restated his accusations and insisted that those living outside China’s borders could be bound to Chinese law for their online speech. Mr. Rehage, he said, had violated the so-called Seven Bottom Lines.

These are Internet speech rules laid out by the director of the Cyberspace Administration of China, Lu Wei, in 2013, Mr. Zhu said. They require Internet users to respect China’s laws, state interests, socialist values, moral standards, social order, people’s rights and the truth.

“If he compares Mao Zedong to Hitler, putting aside legal issues, I think he has violated the ‘social order’ or ‘moral standards’ of the Seven Bottom Lines,” Mr. Zhu said.

LOL! Imagine if New Zealand demanded that all internet users referred to Australia as 'The West Island of New Zealand', and not doing so was breaking the law.
