This particular bridge has actually had countermeasure after countermeasure added, and it still happens. The drivers are just inattentive idiots.

Which, to me, indicates that its less they are idiots to be villanized and that this bridge could get any of us when we are at its weakest.

It’s a revenue generator. There’s no damage to the bridge thanks to the detached shield beam, and they get to bill idiot truckers for the cost of clean‐up.

The 11'8 bridge is actually problematic for that, because trucks still need access to the side road immediately in front of it. You don't know for sure an approaching truck is going to be an idiot and try and drive under the bridge, so you have to do non-disruptive stuff like a stonking great TRUCKS MUST TURN sign that flashes when a truck is approaching.

Yeah at some point it's a situation where they clearly don't care that much (or it's making them more money in fines than it costs to repair) because, as shown, there are plenty of ways to fix it.
They all cost money, but not a ridiculous amount of money.

So turns out they actually installed new sensor and a big red light under the bridge that will immediately trigger for half a minute with panel on top telling the truck driver they are overheight and need to turn

But you can probably guess what happens next

It was actually present in the last few crashes of the previous clip and this one has a better view angle and explanation for it.

Did you not watch the video? They were specifically pointing out how federal standards regulating those bars aren't strict enough.

All the trucks in the video had them, and most just sheared right off, like the drivers head. :gibs:

The problem is that the bars aren't braced in any way, so they just crumple at the welds.

Thankfully, down here, we have Standards Australia which is an independent body which goes and tests best practice and design and they come up with Standards which can be adopted into legislation.

This happened with rear underrun protection when they modified the Vehicle Standards Act to require bars which would, in fact, hold up under an impact.

They will deform to absorb impact, but not enough to "eat" the car.

Like this:

Also - the old style "big fukken metal tubes" are still legal, but they have to be shown to be able to stop a car driving a (I think) around 60kph.

The van/truck rental place I go to sometimes has a wall of shame/warnings about clearance issue collisions. And they very explicitly state all over that the rental agreement and walls that the rental insurance doesn't cover those.

The only permanent ways to fix it are to lower the road or raise the bridge. They can't just raise the bridge because it's a heavily used railway and they'd need to steadily raise and lower the grade for miles because trains don't like speed bumps, and they can't just lower the road because there's a large sewer line underneath. Anything that would permanently fix the problem is not only expensive, it would involve shutting down either a section of a major railway line or a sewer line and a heavily trafficked local intersection for an extended period of time.

Stupid thought, but why don't they just lower the impact bar under the bridge to like 9' so there's no way a truck driver would look at it and go "eh, I'll squeak under, should be fine"

The resulting decapitations, probably?

Because they want as many vehicles as possible to be able to pass under the bridge.

You would then just end up with a whole new group of vehicles hitting the lowered bar. For any height (X) of bar you will have a non-zero number of vehicles exhibiting height X+Y that believe their height to be sub-X until the equation is resolved into a pile of wreckage with a remainder of shreds of dignity.

The bridge did nothing wrong and the impacts don't really hurt the bridge. So long as the fines more than cover the wear and tear from the impacts leave it be, hell turn it into a cash cow and a shaming device. jack the fines up, name and shame the drivers.

Looking at the place in google maps, I think you're right. There aren't any buildings nearby on the other side that aren't obscured by trees or gets a good angle.
