We both drat well know that manufacturing jobs or coal mining or forestry aren't coming back, but people are stupid. And then you have the white supremacy shitbags who are also in the same "voting bloc". They are distinct, but the Democrats did a terrible job of bringing in disenfranchised voters.

Yes - what does 'be Charismatic' mean in these circumstances - both Barrack Obama and Donald Trump were charismatic - both won a bunch of those rust-belt states, both came from entirely different angles - surely that isn't only showmanship? What were the parallels in the approach? Where's the common factor, on a more granular level?

JawKnee posted:Could you go into more depth about how 'more charisma' would help? (I'll point out, ahead of time, that I am not an American) People in America like candidates they can believe in and that have that gift. Being slick with words, and being charming gets you far. Especially in the rural South, and some of the Midwest. Sometimes it's not really more about the issues, but more about "Which candidate do I better identify with?" A charismatic reality TV billionaire or a career politician? A difficult choice, but Hillary sure didn't have the same speaking power.

Because of its secretive and independent nature, ECOAS has its own command system that even Londo Bell has no authority over them directly. The task force first saw combat in Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn. ...I'm not sure what that has to do with the election

negromancer posted:Okay, then why did they vote in the same assholes downballot? Because people typically vote the party and are largely retarded. Especially when it comes to incumbents. As a D&D poster, you'd think you'd know that. You seem at least intelligent and eloquent with words. Oh, and in the case of my state (Oregon) Republicans don't put a ton of effort into trying to win Democratic strongholds. You'll find that to be the case in a lot of "swing" states due to gerrymandering, making voter density in various districts to be at least 60/40 if not stronger in some respects.

JawKnee posted:Could you go into more depth about how 'more charisma' would help? (I'll point out, ahead of time, that I am not an American) Have you seen Hillary talk? Shes a geek rear end political wonk nerd. Shes incredibly smart, but also a giant dork. Sometimes shes endearingly awkward, but frequently its just kinda mechanical. Aside from her political baggage people just dont trust her because of her lackluster public speaking skills, and shes pretty uninspiring. By contrast Barack Obama is one of the greatest orators of all time and has the ability to turn the charm up to 11 at the drop of a hat. Even Trump has a certain style to him thats easy for idiots to understand and almost hypnotic for anyone else to listen to The reason this is important is that voting in America is a goddamn pain in the rear end. We do it on a Tuesday, which is not a holiday, because ancient stupid agrarian/religious reasons. That means the single biggest hurdle in an election is motivating your voters to get off their rear end and get to a polling station. That takes more than just good policy, it takes persuasive skill and charisma. Hillary lost on turn out. People who said they were going to vote for her just never showed up to the polls. Some of that is because shes an uncharismatic awkward dork. Public speaking skills ultimately matter more than policy stances, because humans are real dumb and suggestible.

It's probably in everyone's interest that Hillary retire from public life, because if she's out giving speeches and promoting causes, she can stay tied to any future democratic hopes. Clearly no dose of reality will ever dispel the idea that she was up to something with all those emails, that she did Ben Ghazi and the Clinton Foundation was funneling Soros money to ISIS. The media gave him a fairly easy ride during the election, but the media loves to poo poo all over presidents, and combined with Trumps complete inability to filter himself or actually think before he speaks, we've got 4 years of gaffes to look forward to.

The biggest problem, honestly, was how drat difficult the Republicans have made voting. I stood outside for 2 hours on election day and I know many other people who had to wait in even longer lines. There just aren't enough polling places, especially in highly Democratic (read: poor, black, young) areas. That's not even counting the reduction in early voting and the proliferation of photo ID laws. With a more equitable voting system we'd see a bluer country even given a lovely candidate like Clinton.
