You currently have 9 HP, but your entire bar is yellow. You are currently as sick as possible. If you gain HP, you will go back up to 10 and, barring any more damage, survive. You're still marked with 9 points of poison, it's just not enough to kill you any more.

Arag is correct. Monster poison works completely differently from player poison; they have iirc 4 levels of poison, which degrades over time & deals damage in the process. Higher levels of poison do dramatically more damage, so you want to ram that 'sick as possible!' cap and keep monsters there. Poison damage and decay is pretty random; there's no concept of "this monster will die to poison". Player poison used to be closer to this, but it was changed a few years ago.

As an added bonus, it will also force a -more- upon seeing Xom altars. Edit Also, I stand by my assertion that getting hit by calcifying dust should force a more. I added it to my RC, but without it, the game actively punishes new players who don't know any better for using Tab.

Had a great MfIE game going that I lost due to underestimating ugly things. Ran into one horrible thing after another in that game, too. A wolf spider in Lair:1, a ridiculous player ghost early in the Dungeon, a death yak somewhere in like D:10, a cyclops AND manticore around that same level, christ. Any recommendations for stuff to add to rcfiles? Anything to optimize my game would help, I already take slow enough. The problem with a lot of resources I can find online is that while it's easy enough to figure out each switch and what they do (there's a manual after all), I still lack the intuition of how I would use these functions to benefit my game. At this point all I've got in there is to have an autoexplore delay so I can watch the path my character is taking while I press "o". Thanks in advance.

I think "force_more_message +=" is one of the more useful rcfile additions, since it sometimes stops you from getting yourself in a poo poo situation because you kept mashing tab. Examples of ones I use;quote:force_more_message += shining eye comes into view This will force pause the game when those monsters enter LOS for the first time. The last one keeps me from spending more than one turn in calcifying dust like an idiot.

This is my DrVM of Hep that's going OK, and then I got this axe: A - +6 war axe of Massacring {speed, rF+ Str+5} Is it worth training axes right now and switching this bad boy out in late game, or do I just use it occasionally and stick to more casting? It's so good, I've never seen a decent axe of speed before in the early game

It's alright, but even a good war axe will start getting outclassed soon after Lair/Orc. Maybe some light Axes investment if it's going to be your melee backup, but I wouldn't go full-tilt axes.

Seriously debating on the relative merits of a NaWi^D stabber, and a NaWi^C stabber, especially if I go hybrid. On one hand, Dith gives me an umbra, and shadow step, and I can still use haste. On the other hand, Chei gives me absolutely absurd stat boosts, and slouch. I would get my EV into the stratosphere, and I'd be able to wear much heavier armors mostly without penalty.

So oka is actually a pretty good god for formicids, then? A lot of thier power comes from being able to tool up with the heaviest of everything so getting weapons, armor and shields as god gifts should really benefit them, right?

I can't see that it would be a bad choice for a fighty Formicid, no. I know even before Finesse worked under stasis there were people winning with crossbowmen formicids of Oka, since as it turns out being able to wield an arbalest or a triple crossbow and a shield when Heroism exists is a pretty solid option. Finesse only makes it better. Watching one of them is how I learned that the Formicid ability to use a two-handed weapon and a shield applied to ranged weapons, too. Until that point I'd assumed it didn't. But nope! Crossbow and shield is just fine. (Or regular bow, but they get -2 aptitudes to that.) Next time you end up somewhere bad, I would recommend stopping to think about your plan of action to survive (especially on Zot:5, where you should go hog wild on any stocked consumables since there is little else to do at that point).

In Spider and Shoals it's rather strong because few enemy types are actually resistant (demonic crawlers, emperor scorpions, and ghost moths in Spider, water elementals in Shoals).

Ok, someone give me a good roadmap for extended with this character (DeNe of Veh): http://crawl.berotato.org/crawl/morgue/araganzar/araganzar.txt Have LCS, Firestorm, will have Necromutation soon. Plenty of power, just not sure the best order to do things now that you can't avoid stat drain and mutation, etc. I quit doing extended when it became more of a pain than it was worth.

Drop Invisibility because your cloak supplies it and you barely use the spell in the first place (or keep for Zigs and the levels with ghost moths). Dump Silence, you're basically a blaster caster and being without is going to be problematic, especially where it would be effective again (Tomb with a quickblade of pain? HA!). Dump two of LCS or Orb or Iron Shot. All of them are single target spells with 2 that can miss on evasive targets and one that can have trouble in corridors. Dump Animate Skeleton. Arguably dump Bolt of Fire since Firestorm does the job more efficiently. Necromutation isn't greatly necessary and can sometimes be a trap. The alternative is Death's Door and Borg's Revivification which are easier to learn. Maybe learn another level 9 spell, leaning towards Shatter since you've got the Earth Magic built up already. Abyss->rumble around Zot for more XP->Vaults:5->Pan->Tomb->Hell->Orb run.
