I am actually starting to think that eliminating the minimum wage and economic protectionism actually would bring the jobs back, but that assumes the point of a job is just to have something to do, not to be able to live a decent life. If the rural folks are willing to work for peanuts like the chinese slaves are, why wouldn't I open a hammer-handle factory across from Doobie Dogs. I can do it with zero qualifications and bigly debt too!

Thoguh posted:I think this is a core assumption of a lot of people on the coasts but I really don't think it holds up. For a lot of people getting out is a priority. But also for a lot of people, including educated ones, there is a desire to stay in the middle of the country. And even the shitiest, redest states like Kansas have towns like Lawrence that are very progressive and cosmopolitan. And if somebody wants a huge city places like Minneapolis and Kansas City provide that at a fraction of the cost of living of the big cities on the coast. Accepting that not everybody wants to live in New York or LA is one of the things the Democrats are going to have to do if they want to come back. Not to mention that the more concentrated their base becomes the further it dilutes their voting power. With their current distribution and doing their best they can win a national election but that's it. The house is a lost cause and the senate is maybe within their grasp but they'll have to get their poo poo together fast. Meanwhile the sea of red in the middle has grown almost large enough that the Republicans could probably realistically make an effort to pass a constitutional amendment. The entire system was designed explicitly to penalize trying to concentrate power in the cities and given the state of the electoral map, I'd say the system is working. If the Democrats wish to be relevant they have to expand inland.

So...turnout update. We're up to 127.1 million votes counted, compared to 129.2 in 2012 and 131.4 million in 2008. There are easily at least 3-4 million more votes to count, so 2016 might end up having more votes cast than any other election. Clinton's vote total is now past 60 million, leaving her the 5th most voted for candidate ever, behind Romney 2012 (~61 million), Bush 04 (~62 million), Obama 2012 (~65 million), and Obama 2008 (~69 million...nice). Clinton will definitely pass Romney 2012 and probably pass Bush 04, settling for third most voted for candidate.
