I'm kind of surprised they were in such a rush to finish Bleach. With Naruto, Assassination Classroom and now Toriko ending, they are hurting for big name series. This gets worse when you consider that HxH is on its constant hiatus, and One Piece seems to take one week off a month. It wasn't so long ago that I was reading 4 or 5 Jump series a week. Now the only guaranteed weekly fix I get is from MHA.

Was Bleach still a big name series? I thought it had plunged in the popularity rankings.

In a perfect world dungeon meshi would be put into shonen jump as a replacement for toriko.

And then a thousand chapters get made of it.

But we live in the darkest timeline.

I won this avatar on a technicality this thick.
Now that Toriko is ending, besides One Piece and Hunter x Hunter, what are the longest running series in the magazine now?

EDIT: It was surprisingly easy to look up. Other than Gintama, the rest of the series in Weekly Shonen Jump are from within the last 5 years.

Basically. It started really good, playing to unique strengths (awesome food) but after a certain point it just turned into another generic shonen and became mediocre, not to mention how it started pulling new powers out of its rear end in pretty terrible ways and the cool character dynamics basically became nonexistent in favour of more shonen fights, and it became rather hard to follow.

It still wasn't Bleach-level mediocre, but it wasn't fun to read anymore, and that's the biggest error a series can make.

It's a good thing that one piece is still great and cool. Oda is definitely ending it on his own terms in a decade or so.

its weird how shounen is really good at having promising starts only to crash and burn like 2 arcs in.

its pretty easy to see why dragonball and one piece are so widely regarded. naruto is dumb but it only got slightly more dumb as time went on.

Doctor_Fruitbat

Toriko really didn't grab me, pretty much from moment one. It just seemed like food-themed Calvinball, even early on, and everything about the food theme felt really forced and artificial every single time it was brought up, so basically every panel.

I think you're severely understating how dumb Naruto got after the initial getting dumb point.

Toriko has its moments (I liked the most recent chapter, for instance), but I do agree that the way it kept making up new nonsense food-metaphysics was dumb, as was the shift from imaginatively weird foods to glowing blobs of gelatin.

I'm well documented in this, but I really only think Naruto got bad in the tail end of the ninja war, I think it had two or three peaks in quality throughout before that, though it was obviously always dumb.

I'm enjoying Promised Neverland so far, though since it's still in its first year I'm not getting attached yet.

I haven't started on MHA, but I guess I probably should!

I just went back to the post-mortem thread and the final page is the best thing Bleach ever gave us. A sudden swerve into James Joyce fart porn, Yorouchi's buttocks six times in a row then "welp, gently caress this then" *locked*.

MHA is the only other shonen series I read outside of One Piece. I give it a thumbs up.

Don't get it twisted who your enemies are.
MHA is refreshing not because it does anything particularly new or different from most shonen, it just executes the well-worn tropes and ideas fantastically. Also, all the side characters are interesting and likeable, and the author's given lots of them time to shine alongside the main cast, which was probably my biggest gripe with Naruto post-timeskip. And the lightning fast pacing helps (though certain parts I kind of wish he'd linger on a bit more, honestly).

MHA doesn't really do anything new, but it executes it very well and the characterization is top notch. You really get a feel for all the characters and the side characters actually get to shine!

Nah they slow it down a ton. If you keep a look out for internal monologues while minute long clips of stuff that happened about 10 minutes ago play it becomes obvious how much they were trying to pad it out. They do the One Piece anime thing where a bunch of the episode is dedicated to a recap and flashbacks so that they only need to dedicate about 2 chapters to an episode.

It's kind of frustrating, since there are so many places they could have added new filler scenes instead of just stretching things. I can see why they didn't, though.
