They do a few callbacks to previous episodes. I'm about 30 episodes in and it sounds like they're going to establish some sort of meta-plot but it hasn't been overwhelming. If anything, it adds a bit more tension to everything. One of the descriptions of a creature was one of the most horrifying and grotesque things I've ever heard, which is really saying something.

There's a lot of metaplot, but a most of it you have to search for while the other parts are handed to you.

Give the whole thing a listen to and then go to their forums where the superfans have done episode by episode threads. They pulled out some really good info that went right over my head. "Oh, person who brought the book on ebay is XXBookLoverYYYY, well YYYY means Z therefore XX is the initials of This person. Right?" And then looking at it, you're right. Duh obviously. But I never would have seen it myself since I'm on semi autopilot and the name like that was just a placeholder in my brain.

I think my biggest problem with Tanis was that there never seemed to be any urgency in Nic's actions. He was drugged and almost raped once and completely shrugged it off. Every time I heard "We'll talk more about this next week, but first let me tell you about Bombas Socks," I rolled my eyes. If you're in the middle of a massive conspiracy and you're personally being targeted, you publish everything you've got as soon as possible before they can shut you up. You don't tease and hold stuff off until the next episode.

Yeah I think that's an issue with the writing in PNWS podcasts. The situation may be tense, but they'll default to being the narrator over being in character. Then again that may just be Nic's character, given how all of MK's early findings were met with "ummm okay?".

Uncanny County, Synesthesia theater, and Ars Paradoxica are all good.

As for Tanis, you don't have to listen to Black Tapes for it. Despite the same characters being in both, there's really no crossover other than light references to "You're making a podcast about _____". (Which kinda ruins the immersion- within each story, is the other podcast treated as fiction? But that's easy to ignore if you don't listen to both.)

I've tried to listen to Welcome to Nightvale twice and both times I tune out almost immediately because the first episode straight up just sounds like this dude made a bunch of monkeycheese bulletpoints about wacky things and reads them down a list with virtually no cohesion.

I'm assuming they figure out an actual format, but I didn't want to sit through enough of the episodes to find out when, and none of my friends listen to it.

I know it's generally well regarded, so I keep wanting to give it a shot since it must actually get good at some point. Is there a generally acceptable "jumping in" point where a story about the town actually starts, or is it just two years of creepy bullet points?

I guess I don't know either. From the gushing online I had thought it had some sort of overarching narrative or story about what was going on in Nightvale that picked up after the first set of episodes.

Totally understand there's an audience for that and it's enjoyable, just not my thing, I guess.

Edit: I also listened through Alice Isn't Dead in full, which was generally great, so I think I also assumed that that was an improvement on a format they had figured out in Nightvale and i just didn't know when that started.

It does have those, but they don't really start until year 2.

Len, how much have you listened to? Years 2 and 3 are a little more focused on Cecil, but it goes back to desert town weirdness after a while. There's still a bit more of a focus on characters in general though.

EDIT: \/ fair enough, you did get a taste of what it's evolved into then. Though after that point, it goes mostly more episodic again thankfully.

It's very much in the Buffy style: start each season with episodic stories, with subtle background elements that build to a major confrontation at the end of the season. The story arcs get stronger later on in the series, so you might like that better. Of course, then some fans of the early episodes say "I liked it better when it was just creepy stuff being narrated and not so much story." *shrug* Can't please everyone.

I love Knifepoint (doubly for its lack of Mailkimp-squarespace-mattress advertising) but I'm pretty sure it's done now, or at least that's the impression I get from the description for the last/latest episode. :smith:

Some of the narrators are pretty awful, I will say that. Marbles-in-mouth bad.

Anyone listened to LifeAfter? It was pushed pretty heavily in the ads of the last episode of Heavyweight and I was wondering if it's any good before I invest the time.

The reviews seem to waiver between "omg best podcast" and "poorly acted, scripted, produced and doesn't live up to premise".

You might like Wolf 359. It's very goofy for the first 8ish episodes but picks up a serialized plot and a much darker tone after that and sticks to it. Really impressive production with some competent acting too.

There's also the Deep Vault by the guys who did Archive 81. I finished the last episode for it yesterday. All in all I felt like it was a lot weaker than A81 but it wasn't terrible.

Like people have mentioned before I really enjoyed the Bright Sessions, EOS10, Archive 081, and Hello from the Magic Tavern. And I agree with the posts here about We're Alive it's pretty solid until season 3 and the story starts to just linger with no real purpose. Apperantly there is a new podcast by them but if I have to finish the first series I'm not sure I'll be tuning in. Alright so two podcasts I haven't seen mentioned here are:

Dreadtime Stories with Malcolm McDowell (there are also audiobooks for purchase that I would recommend) is a well produced cheesy horror podcast. Some of the stories have they eye roll of "they're sersiously suggesting that" but somehow, maybe it's the production quality, I don't mind it. Only two episodes so far but I'm a big fan of the audiobooks so excited it's now for free.

The other that I just started listening to but not gotten far is Hunt the Truth (iTunes/Soundcloud) normally wouldn't listen to a spin off podcast (espicially a Halo spin off), but I'll admit after the first episode I'm intrigued. No knowledge of the game seems to be needed, kind of curious if anyone listened to it, do you think it's any good?

Anyway just added ars PARADOXICA, Wolf 359, The King Falls AM, and Our Fair City so looking forward to listening to those.
