Tiler Kiwi posted:voters* A majority of voters (52%) did not vote for Hillary Clinton. Yes, she has more votes in the popular election than Donald Trump (48% to his 47%) but 5% of voters didn't vote for either candidate. (Even that overstates it - it's actually 47.7% to 47.4%. Basically, a statistical tie.) The fact that Hillary "won" the popular election is interesting, but ultimately meaningless. It's a trivia factoid. People who do not live in swing states know that their presidential votes do not really matter and vote accordingly. In order for the popular vote to mean anything, we'd have to get rid of the Electoral College before holding the election, so everyone knew that their votes really matter towards who gets elected.

To me arguing that she should have won the election because of the popular vote is like arguing that the loser should win a basketball game because they made more baskets.

Wait, what? I'll admit that my sports knowledge is a little vague, but if you get more baskets doesn't that mean you win in basketball? Isn't that the whole point?

Nope - it's a slightly confusing but good analogy. Baskets can be worth either 2 or 3 points depending on where they're made from. So it's entirely possible (and probably fairly common) that the winning team scored more points but fewer baskets.

The analogy would work better if basketball teams got points based on where their home stadium was, for example the Orlando Magic getting 2 points for a layup while the LA Lakers are only awarded 1 point for the same basket.

SwitchbladeKult posted:The analogy would work better if basketball teams got points based on where their home stadium was, for example the Orlando Magic getting 2 points for a layup while the LA Lakers are only awarded 1 point for the same basket. That's not the point - the point is that both teams are aware that certain baskets are worth more points than others and they each know that when they decide how to play the game. In the election, campaigns are aware that the electoral college is all that really matters, and they take that into account when campaigning. It's why the popular vote is an interesting, but ultimately meaningless, metric. Just like the number of baskets scored per game is an interesting statistic, but doesn't inform strategy. The objective isn't to score the most baskets (votes), it's to score the most points (EC votes). Everyone knows that ahead of time and how people vote and campaign strategies are based on that. None of this is to say that we should keep the electoral college, but rather that the popular vote numbers for elections with the electoral college don't mean anything because they're not the metrics that matter and everyone knew that ahead of time.

Context is WW2 Allied nations, and Axis propaganda emphasizing the differences between them. Like for instance Nazis thoroughly documented the Katyn massacre because it painted Soviets as butchers of Poland, and since Britain had gone to war to defend Poland from aggression it was a vulnerable point in the Anglo-Russian pact. Likewise why should American families ration food just so that communist soldiers would get meat rations, why should Russian soldiers die by the millions while western Allies refuse to open a second front, why should Englishmen fight in Alamein while Americans are courting their women over in Britain, etc. Allied propaganda of course tried to do the same to their enemies.

I seriously thought that this year was going to see both a female UN Secretary-General and a female US President. Instead a fictitious female character in a low cut top created by a man got named a UN Ambassador (and the female staffers who protested the idea were told to stop making a fuss) and a xenophobic literal con-artist male won the Presidency. On the plus side, Michelle Obama is getting what she wanted.... the gently caress out of the White House.
