To be fair, I think it tripped me up when I read it, too. I don't immediately pick up on the flashbacks in this comic.

S1 is a chapter where a lot of Gunnerkrigg's plot arcs really kick off and it's cementing a close to the first section of the story where Annie is introduced to the court, by looking at how close and important their friendship has become.
