does anyone have some good examples of socialist literature I can print out and give to people/talk about? I'm in the suburban/rural South so it's mostly poor white people exactly like you talked about ^

If not, contact one and ask about starting a local branch in your area. They will be able to give you resources.

White women in the US, couldn't or were discouraged to getting work. The husband brought home the 'family wage' himself usually. So women were subject to economic dictations within the home and capitalism outside the home as well. IIRC feminism originally started with analysis like this, like men shouldn't have a 'monopoly' on the family wage and it shouldn't be seen as 'philanthropy' when the wife spends some of his wage. The biggest minimum wage advocacy groups are linked to socialism, as were the biggest mutual aid groups back in the 60s. It's absolutely not about storming the Winter Palace at this point but advocacy and aid.

Little known fact about the Confederacy: they had to force through a conscription law early in the war to shore up manpower, which meant that southern men were serving in the army while all of their fields lay fallow. The women they left behind didn't have enough labor on hand to keep up with it all and within a couple years they were facing massive food shortages. During the height of the conflict, the Confederate government - which was already stretched to the limits of its capacity - was also forced to implement a welfare system that would deliver food to almost every household, because the wives of Confederate soldiers revolted and started bread riots all across the south.
