Apparently Georgi's portrayal is authentic to the role Also, the Trophée de France (4rd GP event) is happening right now. If you want to know how to watch it, click here. Looks like Javier is going to the GPF. This makes him the second to qualify. Maera Sior fucked around with this message at 20:07 on Nov 12, 2016 |

Preface this by saying I'm three episodes in. I'm that weird gay that's okay with shows limiting themselves to fanservice, simply because the characters not hearing about the Bible from their relatives and having discussions about what Trumpworld means for their civil liberties is already putting the show into a fantasy for me. BUT... I'm surprised so many people are focused on the gay in this show, for two reasons: 1. It's kind of an awkward triangle, what with a 15 year old fighting for the attention of a much older man. 2. The gay almost feels like it was shoehorned into the story by virtue of being a post-Free sports anime. If there was no gay subplot at all, and it was just about a guy getting trained by his idol, it would still be a gorgeous, quality show. So yeah, on one hand, I love watching shows with m/m relationships, but on the other hand this show is good enough that I wish I could endorse it to someone like, say, a 30-something year old dad, without having to preface it with, "this show is loaded with gay flirting and man rear end, but you should endure it because..."

Craptacular! posted:gay flirting the horror!!!!! No but seriously I can put up with straight flirting and lady tits in just about everything made nowadays. Your 30-year-old dad can put up with the incredibly tame man-rear end Also this is like the one sports anime where the gay is NOT shoehorned in, and is instead a big part of the plot. Did you miss all of the stuff about these guys unlocking their femininity

That aspect of the show is way more interesting to me than Free, because its more explicit and dramatic, whereas Free's gayness or whatever you wanna call it was more aesthetic than actual.

Again, I love gay flirting. I usually put shows with gay shipping as a priority each season and have to be coaxed to give any "sixteen girl harem and a single guy" story a chance. It just feels a little, uh, pasted in? Like they have one flamboyantly sexual character who flirts with the MC in borderline inappropriate ways that feel some for laughs and finishing squeals. As a gay romance goes, that's... eh. I'm undeniably pro-gay because, uh, hello; but I wish they were characterized differently. But given that this is anime, I'll just have to take what I can get.

JUST KEEP WATCHING. You're wrong about the first three episodes and definitely wrong about the ones you haven't watched yet. The difference between regular yaoi baiting and this show is like night and day.

everything i've heard about free makes comparing anything to it sound like kinda insulting. while i agree viktor can be offputting (i still don't particularly like him, much less him with yuri), the show is definitely giving care to the sexuality of its characters. also yurio is in no way involved in any sort of love triangle, if you really expected that to be a thing after ep3 lol.

This was the first trailer for Free, which came out before we even knew what the name of the show was: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DfFORTyka48 It's incredibly misleading! By the time it actually came out the show was freakishly sexless, like there was really nothing going on there that wasn't in a normal sports anime. They just happened to be in swimsuits all the time? It's very weird. But yea, Yuri!! on Ice is the show that I expected Free to be, and so much more.

The main relationship in this show strongly reminds me of a relationship I had in college, except with "figure skating" replaced by "finance and investment banking" (and the fact that I'm not gay, though I'm pretty sure the other guy was either gay or bi). This guy was also an older (though only by two years) Russian guy who sort of took me under his wing and coached me on professional stuff while also giving me a bunch of fun social opportunities I wouldn't have had otherwise. There was even the "more gregarious/aggressive taller blonde hair person + more shy/introverted shorter dark hair person" appearance dynamic, though that was partly because he was like 6'7". The issue of him maybe being gay (which is something I'm pretty sure he would not have been cool with admitting due to his Russian upbringing) never explicitly came up, though it became kind of obvious to myself and a couple mutual friends after we got drunk one night and he seemed to really want me stay over at his place (which didn't really make any sense logistically); the topic never really came up again after that. I was never quite sure what to make of the whole situation, because to me it was a valuable friendship but I also won't deny that I benefited greatly myself from having a popular rich friend. I ended up deciding that it would ultimately have to be his decision whether he wanted to breach the subject and that it wasn't my place to talk about it.

This was sort of interesting because it reinforced a particular nuance to this show's storytelling - we're viewing everything at a distance, as if through the eyes of a social media network that's incredibly pervasive but never quite catches everything. We didn't see the kiss itself, we didn't see how their conversation in the garage ended, and, most importantly, we didn't see when their relationship started - because this episode made it clear that they've been together for a while, and Viktor just took it a lot more public than it already was. There's something very deliberately voyeuristic about this show, and we should remember that a voyeur only gets a tiny peek through the keyhole.
