If anyone needs help with Diablo 1 mods, just hit me up.

Also, d2 median: sigma is supposed to be coming out this year. Yay!

Is there anything you need to do in particular to get the game set up on Windows 7? I found an HD mod here, but I don't know if you need some other patch to get the game running. Also, are there any quality-of-life mods that improve the interface or add any conveniences?

I also thought about checking out the Hellfire expansion. Do you need to do anything special to get it working?

That mod you're linking already has a bunch of quality-of-life improvements, notably increased movement speed while in town and ALT-highlighting of items.

Oh, I see. I was looking through the site, and I realized that the Belzebub mod they describe IS the HD Mod. I got confused because it's not actually listed as Belzebub in the downloads menu. I thought that you were referring to the Project Tchernobog mod.

Will that mod work with Hellfire too? There's a link to another mod for Hellfire called 'The Awakening', and there's a page saying you need to download a registry entry to get the game running properly on Win7. Can I run the game with the HD mod alone, or do I need to download the registry entry.

Belzebub is singleplayer. Tchernobog is multiplayer. It's the only mod that adds resolution support at this time. It's also not being worked on anymore. If you don't want to have to mount the .iso, you can copy the diabdat.mpq from the .iso to the Diablo folder.

Hellfire works kind of like a mod for Diablo in that it contains the diabdat.mpq already and runs off that. You can simply move the mod files over to the Hellfire folder and run them. The Dark or The Hell are pretty good. I'm waiting for The Hell 2 before I start playing another mod.

Well, I got the game installed with no problem. It even started immediately and I was able to play it with no issues, save for a brief visual snag on the load screens (Although that didn't last after I installed the 1.09 patch.)

I installed Belzebub, and it seems to be working fine. Right off the bat, I like how the are options to adjust how fast you walk in town, that townsfolk have quest icons, and that now there's no dithering in the dungeons is reduced.

I know this sounds like an odd thing to ask, but do you 'miss' anything by not playing through unmodded version? I like the quality of life changes, but I don't really know how the new content from Belzebub is integrated, and what it changes or adds to the vanilla game.

I don't miss anything. The extra res and QOL changes honesty make it feel better than a lot of Indy RPG releases. It still had stuff like Gear With Negative Stats and doesn't hold your hand to find things, and bosses are really frigging hard.

Belzebub adds a poo poo load of quests, I believe, including the ones that were originally cut from Diablo. A lot of the quest/event stuff has been moved into another instance, like you have to open a TP in the butchers room, to get to his chamber.

I'm playing Multiplayer, though, and that client has no quests for multi but it's been tweaked to provide a better experience without them.

I just installed Hellfire in a separate directory. Can I merge the .mpq files into the main Diablo directory, or do I have to keep Hellfire separate, and extract the mod files over. I ask because I started a game without Hellfire installed, and I'm wondering if I add the Hellfire content in without having to start a new game.

It blew my mind, when you were able to enter one of the houses, and clear out its cellar for Hellfire worm monsters.

I had read about it before, and it was great to see it in the game, although we'll never know how it would've really been with Blizzard behind it. The "worms in the cellar" had always intrigued me, ever since I saw it in a design document.

If it's a hellfire mod it needs hellfire. Hellfire has the .mpq file already, regular Diablo needs you to copy it from the .ISO.

BTW the worm cellar is not a hellfire addition, it's a missing d1 quest. There's a lot of quests they never finished and some mods add them in. Hellfire dungeons are on the right side of the map, or near the catacombs entrance

Sorry, what I meant was the Belzebub mod. I copied the diablodat.mpq file over from the Diablo .ISO, so it doesn't have to load it from the disc when I run Belzebub now.

The Hellfire .ISO has four.mpq files (hellfire.mpq, hfmonk.mpq, hfmusic.mpq, hfvoice.mpq). When I started the Hellfire .exe, it asked for the Diablo CD.

When I tried copying the Belzebub files into the Hellfire directory, and ran the mod with the Diablo .ISO mounted, it didn't seem to recognize the Hellfire files, as the Monk class didn't show up. I also tried copying the Hellfire files into the main Diablo directory, with the the diablodat.mpq, but it still didn't seem to work.

Sorry if I'm being real dense about this.

I thought you were pretty clear on that.

While I've never been a fan of having a final boss -after- Diablo, the two new dungeons introduced in Hellfire were alright with me, the Alien-like Hive especially. It also featured one of my favourite things in Diablo 1, namely changing the town map. There's just something about morphing old tiles and sprites into something else that fascinates me, which 3D graphics never did. It doesn't feel like you're supposed to change static pictures, almost like you're breaking the game, while fully rendered 3D stuff is more ephemeral to me.

Yeah belzebub will not work with Hellfire at all. It's based on vanilla. Hellfire and diablo are not compatible for mods.

Now that I think about it, ES doesn't support full merc equipment by default because of mac compatibility (there's no plugy for mac, or wasn't back when ES was relevant). Pretty sure all you have to do is add a line for it to your plugy.ini.

This is pretty much exactly what you need to do, but for mercmod.ini. (found in your ES directory)

Find the commented out lines for the allowed equipment and remove the semicolon. Sometimes switching between patches messes with the ini file so make sure your mercs all have the correct allowances. To be able to equip ring/amulet/gloves/boots/belts the allow line should include the numbers 47,56,10,12,50 after the standard equips. Make sure to add this to each merc though. (merc2 merc3 merc4 merc5)

Hope this solves your problem duder.

Nah, it works in SP when you use his SP instructions, but it requires a D2 loader and modified ES launcher. Using those everything with ES works, but I couldn't get the merc stuff to work. Now I see how you're supposed to uncomment the mercmod.ini. You also lose the greatly expanded inventory that straight PlugY gives you, but that's not a dealbreaker.

Okay, started the process over again. Installed ES using the VM on the front page of the ES wiki. Installed the stuff from Mad Brahmin's site as per the instructions under "For Singleplayer Users".

This is what my current mercmod.ini looks like. I'm not sure if I'm editing this correctly, or if i am, if it's even being loaded into the game, since I'm using MB's D2loader.

I just tried the first one, thinking that would have to be the Rogue, and it's currently not working.

Edit: How do you find what these loving numbers mean, like the class and item codes, I guess?

You uncommented the wrong line. It's the allow line under each merc that needs to be uncommented. After that, add the numbers from the line that you accidentally uncommented to each merc allow line in addition to the numbers that are already there. Make sure to recomment that first line you removed the semicolons from just in case that messes with stuff.

I really think the reason is that I'm using MB's stuff and it will only load stuff with D2HackIt.dll, and the custom launcher is reflective of that. D2HackIt only loads .d2h files, and renaming the .dll files to .d2h obviously doesn't work.

I mean I'd rather have the autostocker stuff, pick, ammoguard, etc. than a fully kitted-out merc and the larger inventory space I guess but it's still kind of a bummer.
